Islamic Perspective on Marriage and Interfaith Relationships
Islamic teachings and principles on marriage are based on the idea that marriage is a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman. This commitment between a man and a woman is based on companionship, love, and mutual respect.
The Holy Quran has this to say about marriage:
“And among His signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your hearts” – The Holy Quran 30:21
The verse perfectly illustrates the importance of tranquility, mercy, and love in a Muslim marriage, emphasizing the role of a spouse as a source of support and comfort.
Islamic teachings also emphasize the importance of mutual respect in a Muslim marriage. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) had this to say about the topic:
“The most complete of the believers in faith is the one with the best character, and the best of you are those who are best to their women” – Tirmidhi
The hadith emphasizes treating one’s spouse with good character, respect, and kindness.
As for the question about a Muslim marrying a non-Muslim, the guidelines and rules can vary in interpreting the Holy Quran and Hadith. The Holy Quran states:
“This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them” – The Holy Quran 5:5
Many interpret this verse from the Holy Quran to mean that Muslims are only permitted to marry the people of the book, referring to Christians and Jews.
At the same time, the Holy Quran also states:
“Do not marry idolaters until they believe: A slave woman who believes is better than an idolater, even though he might please you” – The Holy Quran 2:221
Many Islamic scholars view this verse and interpret it to mean that Muslims cannot marry non-Muslims unless they accept Islam, primarily if they practice Shirk.
Apart from the Quranic verses, Islamic guidelines regarding interfaith marriage also emphasize the potential challenges and religious compatibility for interfaith marriages. For this reason, Islamic scholars recommend prioritizing finding a partner that shares their values and faith to ensure a successful and harmonious marriage.
