After everything Big Bear Valley has been through, seeing Shadow back in his familiar nest feels like a meaningful moment. Perched among the branches with the lake and mountains stretching behind him, this powerful bald eagle remains closely connected to the territory he knows so well.

🦅 **A MORNING TO REMEMBER: SHADOW ARRIVES WITH A FISH, KAYDEE STAYS BEHIND**

Something special unfolded at the Big Bear nest this morning. ❤️

According to the Friends of Big Bear Valley timeline, Shadow and Kaydee were both recorded at the nest around 8:31 a.m. PT. Shadow left at about 9:09, after roughly 38 minutes together. But Kaydee wasn’t ready to leave—she remained at the nest until approximately 11:24 a.m., staying there for another 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Shadow also delivered the morning’s first logged fish, while viewers heard numerous calls from him. What those calls meant isn’t confirmed by the official timeline, so there’s no way to say whether he was being possessive, displaying, or teaching Kaydee.

🦅 COULD KAYDEE LAY EGGS THIS SEASON?

As interest grows around Shadow and KayDee, many Big Bear eagle watchers are asking the same question: Is KayDee old enough to become a breeding female, and could she lay eggs this season?

KayDee, also known as KD1, was born in the Prado Basin and was banded in April 2022. She is now about 4½ years old. Wildlife experts say she is approaching the age when bald eagles can begin breeding.

However, age alone does not confirm that eggs will be laid. KayDee and Shadow have been observed spending time together and visiting the nest, but what happens next will depend on nature—and cannot be predicted with certainty.

🦅💜 **KAYDEE BRINGS ANOTHER STICK TO THE BIG BEAR NEST!**

Look who’s back with another piece of nesting material! At 7:10 p.m., Kaydee brought a larger stick to the nest and spent some time working on her latest bit of “nestoration” before leaving to join Shadow at the RT.

It’s a beautiful moment for everyone watching their story unfold. Kaydee’s repeated visits and nest-building activity show that she is taking a strong interest in this nest and her surroundings.

Does this mean Kaydee and Shadow are definitely bonded? Not yet. But their interactions and growing nest activity are certainly something eagle watchers will be watching closely.

**78 Gila Trout Rescued From a Wildfire Threat in New Mexico**

A carefully planned conservation effort turned into an urgent rescue when wildfires threatened a rare population of **Gila trout** in southwestern New Mexico.

The Iron Creek population is one of only five remaining Gila trout populations and represents a distinct genetic lineage important to the species’ long-term recovery. After the Hummingbird and Sacaton fires destroyed the trail to Iron Creek, incoming storms raised concerns that ash, mud and debris could wash into the creek and endanger the fish.

Biologists quickly mobilized, using a helicopter to reach the remote area. They safely collected **78 trout**, which were transported to the Mora National Fish Hatchery. Officials reported a **100% survival rate**. ([U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service][1])

**Kaydee & Shadow Seem to Be in Perfect Sync 🦅❤️**

Kaydee spent about 20 minutes perched on a branch above the nest bowl while Shadow rested in another tree nearby. They were far enough apart that it’s impossible to know exactly what they were watching—but from a distance, it appeared they may have been keeping an eye on each other. 👀❤️

Then Kaydee flew into the nest bowl, and just moments later, Shadow followed.

Together, they moved a few sticks around before sharing what appeared to be another gentle “kiss.” Shadow eventually flew off, followed about a minute later by Kaydee. Both then headed into the RT.

Whatever they were communicating, it was a beautiful moment to observe. 🥹🦅

The park is encouraging visitors to safely observe **black bears and elk** while enjoying the fall season. With more people heading outdoors to experience the changing landscape and watch wildlife, giving animals the space they need remains an important part of protecting both wildlife and visitors.

Seeing a bear or elk in the wild is an incredible experience. The best memories are made when these animals can remain wild, undisturbed, and safely observed from a respectful distance.

On **September 26**, Jackie’s life-size carving will be unveiled in a ceremony beginning at **1 PM**. Later that afternoon, at **2 PM**, the park will be officially renamed in her honor.

For those who followed Jackie and cherished her presence, this will be more than the unveiling of a beautiful carving. It will be a lasting reminder of a beloved bald eagle and the connection she created between people and the wild.

The event offers a meaningful opportunity to pause, remember Jackie, and celebrate the legacy she leaves behind.
