How to Speak Without Overusing ‘Uh’ and ‘Um’ 😬🔄

(6 Tips to Avoid Using Filler Words)

When I first started speaking in English, I filled almost every sentence with “uh” and “um.” I thought it made me sound unsure, and the more I noticed it, the more nervous I became. What I learned is this: hesitations are not the problem. The problem is not knowing how to replace them with better habits.

Here are six tips that helped me reduce fillers and sound more confident:

1. Pause with purpose

Take a short pause instead of filling the silence with “uh.” Silence gives your brain time to think and makes your words sound more intentional.
Example: Instead of saying, “I think, uh, this idea is good,” pause and say, “I think… this idea is good.”

2. Use transition words

Replace fillers with natural connectors. Words like “so,” “well,” or “you know” guide your listener and give you time to think.
Example: “Uh, the reason is…” becomes “Well, the reason is…”

3. Slow your pace

Rushing often leads to more fillers. Speak a little slower so your mouth and brain stay in sync.
Example: Practice reading aloud at a slower speed, recording yourself to notice the difference.

4. Practice with short prompts

Pick a random topic and speak for one minute without stopping. Focus on ideas, not perfection. The more you practice, the less your brain relies on fillers.
Example: Talk about “your favorite food” for one minute straight without saying “uh” or “um.”

5. Train with mirror speaking

Stand in front of a mirror and practice answering questions. Seeing yourself makes you more aware of your pacing and expressions. This builds confidence and reduces nervous fillers.
Example: Ask yourself, “What did I do today?” Answer in English while maintaining eye contact with your reflection.

6. Build a recovery phrase bank

Prepare sentences you can use when you lose your train of thought. This avoids awkward silences.
Example: “Let me rephrase that,” or “What I mean is…” These give you time to regroup while sounding natural.

Each time you practice, remind yourself that progress comes from small, daily habits. Your voice deserves to be heard clearly, without distractions from fillers.

These strategies are part of what I share inside my ebook, 📙 30-Day English Fluency Blueprint: Talk Confidently, Anytime.

It is a 170-page guide with 10 chapters and a bonus 30-day fluency planner designed for learners who want to train their brain to think and speak in English naturally.

Etihad Rail has unveiled its first high-speed, all-electric passenger train, promising a game-changing travel time of just 30 minutes between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. This high-speed train, capable of reaching 350 km/h, will connect key locations, including Reem Island, Yas Island, Saadiyat, Zayed International Airport, Al Maktoum International Airport, and Dubai’s Al Jaddaf area. While tenders for its infrastructure are underway, no official timeline for operations has been announced.

In addition to the high-speed service, Etihad Rail plans a regular passenger train traveling at 200 km/h, connecting all emirates and reaching the Oman border. This train will pass through scenic routes, including the Liwa Desert, Sharjah, and Fujairah, and eventually integrate with the wider GCC Railway. Accommodating up to 400 passengers per trip, this service is expected to significantly boost regional connectivity.

Over the next 50 years, the high-speed train is projected to contribute AED 145 billion to the UAE's GDP, aligning with the nation’s goals of sustainable development and enhanced mobility. Once operational, these rail networks will redefine inter-emirate travel, offering faster, greener, and more efficient transportation options.

Dubai has approved a new deep-tunnel drainage project designed to protect the city from flooding for the next 100 years.

The plan, announced at the Mohammed bin Rashid Leadership Forum 2025, comes after record-breaking rains in April 2024 highlighted the need for stronger infrastructure. Officials say the project will not only improve resilience but also showcase Dubai’s ability to lead with smart, long-term solutions.

The project will be implemented through public-private partnerships and supported by advanced Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to enhance disaster preparedness and response. Work has already begun, ensuring Dubai is ready for future challenges.
