A podcast episode reshare that I think is really timely…

We have never had more language to help us understand ourselves. ADHD. Menopause. Nervous systems. Imposter syndrome. Perfectionism. Procrastination. Trauma. Overwhelm.

And I genuinely think that’s a good thing. I’ve spent years talking about self-awareness because understanding why you think, feel and behave the way you do can change so much.

But I also think there’s a conversation we need to be willing to have alongside it.

What happens when the thing that helped you understand yourself starts to become the thing you use to explain why you can’t move forward?

That’s uncomfortable territory, because there’s a huge difference between honouring something that is very real for you and allowing it to become part of your identity. Between saying “this is how my brain works, so what do I need?” and “this is how my brain works, so this is just how I am.”

And I don’t think we always notice when we’ve crossed that line - and that’s why I wanted to reshare The Labels We’ve Given Ourselves: Are They Helping or Holding Us Back?

It’s not an episode about throwing away the labels or pretending the things we’re navigating aren’t real. It’s about what happens next.

Because awareness can give you understanding, compassion and language for your experience. Self-leadership asks you what you’re going to do with that understanding.

And I think that question is worth asking again… Listen to The Labels We’ve Given Ourselves - Are They Helping or Holding Us Back? And let me know what you think…

I understand why we all look for that shiny thing. When you’re tired, stuck, overwhelmed or questioning everything, the idea that somebody else might have the answer is massively appealing.

Tell me what to change. Tell me what successful people do. Give me the morning routine, the strategy, the five-step framework. Tell me how you built your business, found your confidence, got your motivation back, stopped procrastinating, made more money, became more disciplined.

And there’s nothing wrong with learning from other people. The problem starts when we assume their answer must also be ours.

Because their map was drawn from their life. Their circumstances. Their ambition. Their capacity. Their values. Their version of success.

You can follow it perfectly and still end up somewhere you don’t actually want to be.

I see this with founders all the time. They’re trying to fix themselves according to somebody else’s definition of what a good founder looks like. More disciplined. More visible. More productive. More ambitious. Better at switching off. Better at getting up at 5am and drinking something green before the rest of us have located the kettle.

Meanwhile, the far more useful questions are usually much closer to home.

What do I actually want? What isn’t working for me anymore? What am I doing because I genuinely want to do it, and what am I doing because somewhere along the way I decided I should?

Nobody can hand you a blueprint for those answers.

People can challenge you. Support you. Ask better questions. Help you see what you can’t see when you’re standing right in the middle of it.

But the map? That one has to be yours.

Since I’ve been away and have shared some of what’s been going on for me, I’ve had so many DMs from female founders who are asking themselves the same questions. They know something isn’t working anymore. They know they don’t want another year that looks exactly like this one. But ask them what they do want and that’s where it gets difficult.

Because how do you answer that when you’re so bloody close to it? When every decision has another decision attached to it, people depend on you, the money matters, and there are parts of the business you still really love. You can’t tell whether you want to sell the thing, change it, grow it, make it smaller, work three days a week, disappear for six months or just have one week where nobody needs a f*cking answer from you.

And I think this is the point where we can be far too quick to assume the business itself is the problem.

You’ve probably changed enormously since you started it. Your life has changed. What matters to you has changed. Your tolerance for certain things has definitely changed. You might have more money now but much less time. More success but less freedom. A bigger team but more responsibility. You can look at everything you’ve achieved and still have this nagging feeling that surely it was supposed to feel better than this.

So don’t quit yet.

Come and sit down with me before you make any big decisions and let’s properly unpick it. No five-year vision exercise. No telling you to rediscover your why. I want to know what you want your Tuesday morning to look like. What you never want to deal with again. What you miss. What you’d do more of if the business stopped swallowing the space for it. How much money is actually enough. Whether you still want the big ambition or whether, if you’re really truthful, success looks completely different to you now.

Then we can look at what has to change to get you there.

Because perhaps you don’t need to walk away from everything you’ve built. Perhaps you need to stop running it according to decisions you made when you were a different person with a different life and different things to prove. My inbox is open…

Would you accept it from ten?

That is the mic drop question that came up on this week’s episode of the She Is Courageous Podcast , in my conversation with Louise Fernando , and it’s stayed with me ever since.

We were talking about the things we allow in our businesses and our lives. The client behaviour we make an exception for. The boundary we let move slightly. The thing we tell ourselves is manageable because it’s “only one”.

Louise’s way of looking at it was simple: if you wouldn’t want ten clients behaving that way, why is it acceptable from one?

Louise has more than 25 years’ experience in human behaviour, leadership and trauma-informed practice, and although we work with very similar people, we approach that work from completely different angles.

On the podcast we talked about the “unconscious promises” we make to ourselves based on past experiences, how those can influence the decisions we make years later, intuition, self-trust, the nervous system and how you tell the difference between something feeling wrong and something simply feeling uncomfortable because you’re growing.

There were moments where I agreed completely.

There were moments where cynical Shelley was STRUGGLING 😂

But we kept coming back to the same thing.

How often do we already know the answer, but keep looking outside ourselves for someone or something else to give it to us?

This week’s She Is Courageous episode, You Already Know the Answer, So Why Aren’t You Listening?, with Louise Fernando is out now.

Have you ever got to the point where you’re not sure whether you want to change the goal… or you’re just bloody tired of the way you’ve been trying to reach it?

Because I think there’s a real difference.

You can still want the business, the growth, the freedom, the impact, whatever it is you’ve been building towards, and still know that the way you’re doing it now isn’t working for you anymore.

That’s the bit I’ve been unpicking in my own business. I haven’t suddenly stopped wanting more. I haven’t lost my ambition. But I am questioning some of the ways I’ve been trying to get there.

And I’m having versions of this conversation with so many incredible women in my 1-2-1 work too. Women who know they want something to shift, but who are too close to everything they’re carrying to see clearly what that shift needs to be. Shelley Carousel 23.09.pdf

That’s where the deeper work comes in. Not another strategy dumped on top of an already full plate, but space to properly look at what is still right, what isn’t, what you actually want now and what might need to change to get you there. Shelley Carousel 23.09.pdf

If you’re in that place at the moment, I’d love to hear what’s coming up for you.

What do you do when the business you worked so hard to build starts to feel like the thing draining you?

I’ve genuinely asked myself this year whether I’ve fallen out of love with my business.

That is a pretty scary thing to admit after six years of building it. But I’m starting to realise I might have been asking myself the wrong question.

Maybe I’m not tired of what I’ve built. Maybe I’m tired of some of the ways I’ve been trying to build it.

There’s a big difference.

I talk about this properly in this week’s She Is Courageous podcast, including the questions I’m asking myself while I’m still very much figuring it out.

I’ve been thinking about this A LOT recently.

I’ve built the elusive six-figure coaching business
And I’m incredibly proud of it.
But there’s something we talk about constantly in the online world:

Scaling.

How do you serve more people?
How do you make more without working more hours?
How do you stop exchanging your time for money?

And the answers are usually some version of:
- Build the group programme.
- Create the course.
- Launch the membership.
- Build a team of associate coaches.
- Build an AI you!
- Build the funnel.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with any of those things.

But what if I don’t want to?
Because the thing I actually bloody love about my business is coaching.

I love the conversation.
I love knowing my clients properly.
I love watching someone finally say the thing they’ve been avoiding for six months.
I love the voice note that says, “I bloody did it.”

I don’t want to build a coaching empire that eventually takes me further and further away from the actual coaching.

And I think I’ve actually realised my coaching business doesn’t need to give me everything.

Maybe it doesn’t need to be endlessly scalable.
Maybe I can keep it deliberately brilliant, personal and relatively small, and build something scalable alongside it.

That’s a big part of why I’ve started building my second business.
Not because coaching isn’t working.
Not because I’ve fallen out of love with it.

Actually, almost the opposite.
Because I don’t want the pressure to earn more to turn the business I love into a business I never wanted.

So I’m building with another model.

One where I can use so many of the skills coaching has given me; communication, relationships, leadership, developing people, helping people believe bigger and actually take action.
But where growth doesn’t depend entirely on me personally delivering more hours of coaching.

I’m very much at the beginning of figuring it all out
But the realisation that I can keep doing what I love and build differently alongside it.
Is making the most sense anything has made in a long time

This woman has influenced more of my life than I’m sure either of us could have imagined when we first met.

She recruited my husband into the business where I would later meet him.
She went on to coach me through growing my own business, moving to Dubai and becoming the founder I am today.
And somewhere along the way, she also became one of my most trusted confidantes and a very dear friend.

Today, she wasn’t my coach.
She was my friend and a fellow coach, mentor and consultant whose opinion I respect and whose thinking resonates with me on so many levels.

We shared updates, talked business, put the world to rights and laughed a lot.
And somewhere between brunch and all of that, we may have even started plotting some exciting ideas for the future…

Funny how some people enter your life in one capacity and go on to become so much more ….

Grateful for you 🫶🏻

Yesterday I got to hold the room for 9 women incredible who want more.

More from their businesses.
More from their careers.
More for themselves.
More for their lives.

Not because what they already have isn’t enough.
Not because they aren’t grateful for it.

But because they’re courageous enough to admit there are still things they want, and prepared to do something about it.

I’ve held enough rooms like this to know what happens when you bring women like that together.
You don’t need to compare.
You don’t need to make what you want smaller because someone else is further ahead.
You get to say the thing you actually want out loud.
You get challenged on the things you’re telling yourself that might be getting in the way.

You share ideas.
You borrow perspective.
You realise you aren’t alone.

You see possibilities you couldn’t necessarily see on your own.
And you’re surrounded by women who see you and get it.
Women who don’t pretend it’s easy, but 100% believe it’s doable.

That’s what I wanted to create yesterday.
Not a room where I had all the answers.
A room where women could think bigger, challenge themselves, share ideas, admit what they really want, and decide what they’re going to do about it.

Todays Reminder: Get in rooms with women who make it feel safe to want more …. and impossible to keep pretending you don’t 🫶🏻
