The most dangerous thing I have seen is a brand that genuinely believes its own positioning. Premium on the label, mediocre in the formulation, and a price point that assumes the buyer has never opened a search tab or watched a 60 second ingredient breakdown on their phone.

That consumer is gone. Here is who replaced them:

→ They screenshot your ingredient list and paste it into an AI before checkout
→ They trust a creator with 4000 followers over your full page ad because that creator showed the texture, the smell, the repeat purchase
→ They already know your margin. They know private label is made in the same facility. They know “premium” costs you nothing to print.
The word did real work once. It signalled craft, restraint, and honesty about price. Brands earned it by doing something genuinely different.

Today it is a default. A gap filler for founders who have not figured out what their product actually stands for.
The informed consumer in 2026 does not want premium. A founder who can explain the process without a PR filter.

If your entire positioning rests on a single word, the market has already moved past you.

Acquisition Addiction is what killed more D2C brands in 2026 than any market slowdown ever could.

Six years in CPG, and this is the one thing founders refuse to hear.

Pouring money into Meta to get a customer who buys once, never comes back, and costs you more than they ever made you is a strategy. Just a terrible one.

Three out of four first-time buyers on a D2C brand never make a second purchase.

Founders see that number, panic, and immediately ask how to get more new customers. That is the addiction talking.

Here is what the data says and what most founders are ignoring:

✅ CAC has risen 222% over the past eight years. The arbitrage window is permanently closed.

✅ 60% of D2C revenue comes from returning customers, yet almost every budget conversation is still about acquisition.

✅ The rise in CAC is structural, driven by platform saturation and permanent loss of third-party data signals. This is a reset, not a rough patch.

The founders who are winning in 2026 stopped asking “how do we get more customers” and started asking why the ones they already have are leaving.

That is the shift and somehow most brands are still on the wrong side of it 🤦‍♂️
