I was honestly not ready for today. A day where we wake up and one of my heroes, someone I admired so deeply, is no longer with us. Dr. Jane Goodall was a truly remarkable woman — a scientist, a trailblazer, and above all, a messenger of hope.
I had the honor of interviewing her and meeting her a few times. One moment I’ll never forget was watching her after a keynote, when people lined up for hours just to share how she had touched their lives. I heard stories of how she inspired them to work with animals, to fight for our planet, to protect our future. That was her gift: she awakened in people a belief that they could make a difference.
She also had such a lighthearted spirit. Dr. Jane often joked that Tarzan’s biggest mistake was marrying the wrong Jane, and the room would always erupt in laughter. She carried herself with charisma and warmth, yet also with an unshakable determination. Even when critics doubted her methods early on, she never gave up. She transformed the way we see animals, and in turn, the way we see ourselves.
Dr. Jane worked tirelessly — literally until her last day. Traveling over 300 days a year even into her 90s, she reminded us that every voice matters and every choice counts. She often said, “You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you.” And though she is no longer with us, her legacy lives on in the millions she inspired.
We shared some small similarities — we were both born in April, we both loved Africa deeply, our favorite animal was the dog, and above all, we both carried hope for a better future.
It is with gratitude, more than sorrow, that I say farewell to Dr. Jane. Thank you, Dr. Jane, for your courage, your sacrifices, your humor, and your unwavering belief in humanity’s capacity for good. You showed us what it means to live a life of purpose.
There will never be another Dr. Jane. But I am so grateful she left us the greatest gift: hope. As she reminded us: “Together we can, together we will, together we must change the world.”
Rest easy, Dr. Jane. We will miss you. And we will carry forward your hope — because hope is what changes the world.
