Ubisoft reportedly cancelled an unannounced Assassin’s Creed game last summer, one that would’ve tackled the Reconstruction era and featured a formerly enslaved Black protagonist fighting the K*K.

According to a new report, the game was shelved over fears of political backlash in the US and growing online discourse around Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Three Ubisoft employees say the decision came from Paris leadership, calling it a move to “maintain the political status quo.”

The concept reportedly had a strong pitch: post-Civil War America, a personal revenge arc, and heavy historical themes, all familiar territory for the franchise.

While this game was cut, Ubisoft is still busy with other AC projects: a Black Flag remake is in the works, Mirage is getting an AlUla update in November, and Netflix is moving ahead with its live-action AC series.
