Autonomy:
They maintain their own governments, currencies, legal systems, and diplomatic relations except in defense and diplomacy, which are handled by the central Chinese government.
Historical Context:
Hong Kong was a British territory until 1997, and Macau was a Portuguese territory until 1999, with their sovereignty transferred to China under specific terms and declarations.
