Our hearts are with Nepal tonight after catastrophic flash floods tore through communities across the country, leaving at least 157 people dead and more than 400 reported missing.

Among those unaccounted for are hundreds of foreign nationals, while homes, roads and bridges have been swept away and entire communities devastated.

The disaster unfolded at terrifying speed, with torrents of mud, water and debris surging through settlements. Scientists are investigating the cause, with early analysis pointing towards an ice-and-rock avalanche or landslide high in the Himalayas triggering the devastating flood.

Rescue teams are continuing the desperate search for survivors as the scale of the disaster becomes clear.

Our hearts are with Nepal tonight after a catastrophic flash flood swept through communities in the Himalayas, taking lives, destroying homes and leaving hundreds of people missing.

157 people are now confirmed dead with over
400 people reported missing, including 341 foreign nationals in one of the latest official counts.

Dolly Parton will, of course, be remembered for the music, the sparkly gems and a personality every bit as big as her hair. But behind her glamour was a true generosity of spirit.

Throughout her life, Dolly gave millions to causes close to her heart, from childhood literacy and medical research to helping families devastated by wildfires. Her Imagination Library, founded in 1995, went on to put hundreds of millions of free books into the hands of children around the world.

Less well known was her long-standing commitment to conservation.

For 35 years, Dollywood worked alongside the American Eagle Foundation to support the protection, rehabilitation and conservation of bald eagles. 🦅

And it’s a remarkable conservation success story. In 1963, there were just 417 known nesting pairs of bald eagles in the lower 48 states. By 1995, the species had recovered enough to be reclassified from endangered to threatened, and in 2007 (with close to 10,000 nesting pairs) it was removed from the endangered and threatened species list altogether.

A fitting legacy for a woman whose generosity reached far beyond the stage.

Just to add a little context behind the scenes.

Right now The Ethicalist is being run by me . I’m a mum of two young girls, and in moments like this they have been my priority. When loud noises, alerts and constant news updates become part of daily life, my focus has naturally shifted to keeping the little ones calm, reassured and feeling safe.

Over the past few days the region has been dealing with an extremely tense situation. While the vast majority of missiles and drones have been intercepted by the incredible USE air defence systems, some debris and falling fragments have caused damage in parts of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Like many residents, we’ve watched the skies, followed the alerts, and felt the surreal contrast of seeing a place known for its calm and safety suddenly appearing in global headlines.

At the same time, it’s important to say how aware many of us are of the extraordinary efforts being made by the UAE authorities and emergency services to protect residents. The scale of the interceptions and the rapid response across the country is something many people here are deeply grateful for.

For now, family comes first and publishing can wait.

And hopefully soon we’ll all be back to debating which pre-loved shop to visit, which eco-hotel to review, or where to find the best sustainable coffee in the city.

Those feel like very good problems to have. 🌿

We are super happy to share that The Ethicalist Magazine’s FIFTH print edition is out!

Reaching this milestone as a self-published, independent magazine means a geea deal to us. Anyone who’s worked in print knows how much goes on behind the scenes, from commissioning, editing, subbing and designing to printing and distribution. Now do it with a tiny team of three, without the safety net of a media house - and suffice to say, I’m enormously proud of what was once an idea conjured up in ’s kitchen.

While this issue is packed with thoughtful features on conservation, environmental changemakers, slow fashion, and clean beauty, it’s sustainable travel - and the questions around it - that lie at its heart.
