We saw these gorgeous photos of ‘floating garden parking lots’ in Japan and dug around a little to find more facts. 🌱 Turns out AFP fact-checkers say that at least one of the viral images actually comes from China, not Japan.

So while there’s no news story to glean exactly where they are (if you know please tell us!), what’s worth celebrating is this: Japan is rightly famous for weaving green spaces into its cities, from rooftop gardens to vertical forests, while China has also been pushing urban greening in innovative ways. Both deserve credit 🌺

Imagine if we did more of this everywhere… turning ordinary parking lots or flat rooftops into gardens? Not only does it look amazing, but it helps reduce heat, improves air quality, supports pollinators 🐝 , and makes cities more liveable. In many European cities, bus stops and rooftops get greening, why not more parking lots too?

Robert Redford, legendary actor, director, and lifelong environmentalist, has passed away at the age of 89.

Beyond his unforgettable films, he was a passionate advocate for conservation, founding the Sundance Institute and supporting countless campaigns to protect wild places. His words and actions reminded us that nature is worth fighting for. A true icon on screen and in sustainability. His legacy will endure.

Half the planet’s land is used for , but for the first time in modern history, that number is starting to fall. 🌱

Fields are being abandoned. Forests and grasslands are creeping back. is returning to places it once ruled. 🦌

Why?

🌾 Smarter farming means higher yields on less land: since 1961, productivity gains have spared the equivalent of 35 Spains from cultivation.

🧪 Synthetic substitutes, from sweeteners to fibres, have saved another two Spains worth of land.

But here’s the catch: some of this ‘freed up’ land isn’t really going back to nature. We’ve swapped wool for polyester and cotton for synthetics, saving farmland but creating more . And much of the ‘new forest’ is really just monoculture plantations, which look green but support little wildlife.

💡 The real opportunity would be to use this moment to restore ecosystems, rebuild biodiversity and let nature heal, instead of swapping one kind of exploitation for another.

Could the 21st century be the first time in human history we leave the planet with more nature than before? Let’s hope so 🌍✨

As the founder of The Ethicalist, I usually prefer to stay behind the scenes, I’m not a huge fan of putting my face on this grid. But I wanted to pop in and explain why things went so quiet here for a while.

Running a small business while raising kids is full-on (many of you know that juggle!) 🤯 and over the summer holidays I decided to give myself and the team a short digital detox. It gave us all the much-needed space to recharge and come up with a host of fresh ideas.

Of course, the website - theethicalist.com - has still been going strong with daily stories on climate, conservation and conscious living. If you haven’t visited yet, please do! 📰

Now that the schools are back and routines have settled into place, it feels like the right time to set the whole machine back in motion. To those of you who are new here - welcome. 💚 To those of you who stayed through the silence, thank you for your patience. 🙏Here’s to inspiring new stories and big conversations.
