As work continued on the various aspects of the extension of the Prophet’s Mosque ordered by King Fahd, in October 1990 a new phenomenon started to take shape against the skyline; Installation of the prototype for the electronic moving domes of Masjid Al Nabawi.

The masterminds behind the project, Mahmoud Bodo Rasch and Muhammad Kamal Ismail carefully monitored test runs of the prototype on-site, along with representatives from the Saudi Bin Laden Group. Initially, the closing was done in 60 seconds during a test run, later increased by Bodo Rasch to 72 seconds.

At the same time, refining and fine tuning continued on site by expert Moroccan craftsmen. A visit by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to approve the prototype was fixed for December 1990, less than two months later. Therefore, work continued into the cooler winter nights to keep the building of the prototype on schedule. A team of people worked around the clock on this crucial stage of development of the moving domes, in order to ensure the Saudi Bin Laden deadline was met. By the evening of December 26th, 1990, the sliding dome prototype was installed, refined, tried and tested.

On the morning of December 27, 1990, Dr Mahmoud Bodo Rasch and Dr. Muhammad Kamal Ismail carried out the final check to the prototype on the roof of the Prophet’s Mosque. King Fahd visited Madinah later that day and gave his approval, giving the green light to begin with creating the remaining 26 sliding domes for the Masjid Al Nabawi expansion.

صور تاريخية لـ المسجد الحرام عام ١٤٠٠هـ ١٩٧٩م وذلك في عهد الملك خالد رحمه الله تعالى. تبين الصور عملية فرش المطاف بالرخام الأبيض العاكس للحرارة بعد إزالة المنبر والمظلة التي أقيمت خلف مقام إبراهيم، وتأخير مدخل بأر زمزم إلى الخلف، وكذلك إزالة المكبرية التي أقيمت في حصوة باب الصفا والإكتفاء عوضاً عنها بمكبرية صغيرة داخل الرواق.

Historical photos of Masjid Al Haram taken in 1400 AH (1979), during the reign of King Khalid, may Allah have mercy upon him. The photos show the process of covering the Mataf area with white heat-reflecting marble named thassos after removing the pulpit and the canopy that were erected behind Maqam Ibrahim, and moving the entrance to the Zamzam Well to the rear, as well as removing the Mukabariya that was erected into the Mataf and replacing it with a small one inside the portico.
