Hearing God Beyond the Unexpected
Text: Luke 1:26–38

Today’s devotion is taken from the attached video, with a focus on developing spiritual discernment. Notice how Mary responded when she received a message from God through His messenger, Gabriel. She did not immediately react out of fear or blindly accept what she heard; instead, she carefully considered the message and asked, “How shall this be?” Her response gives us an important picture of discernment—listening carefully, seeking understanding, recognizing God’s direction, and ultimately responding with faith and obedience. As we reflect on Luke 1:26–38, let us learn from Mary how to develop a heart that can discern God’s voice and follow His will, even when His direction is unexpected.

Mary’s encounter with the angel Gabriel teaches us that discernment begins with recognizing that God can speak and work in ways we do not expect. When Mary heard the message, she was troubled and questioned how such a thing could happen, showing that discernment does not mean accepting everything without understanding. She listened carefully, asked an honest question, and then received the explanation given by God’s messenger. Discernment requires us to listen before reacting, seek understanding before deciding, and test our response against God’s Word and character. Gabriel reminded Mary that what God promised would be accomplished by the power of the Holy Spirit. Mary ultimately moved from uncertainty to surrender, saying, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.” Her response shows that true discernment is not merely knowing what God is saying but being willing to obey when His direction becomes clear. We also learn that God may confirm His work through circumstances, as He revealed Elizabeth’s pregnancy to Mary as encouragement. When we develop spiritual discernment, we become less controlled by fear, emotions, pressure, or appearances and more attentive to the leading of God. Like Mary, may we cultivate a heart that listens, seeks understanding, recognizes God’s voice, and responds with faith and obedience.

A Divine Appointment
Text: Acts 8:26–40

Acts 8:26–40 reminds us that God can arrange encounters that seem ordinary but carry eternal purpose. Philip was directed by the angel of the Lord to go to a desert road, where he met an Ethiopian eu**ch who was seeking to understand God’s Word. Philip obeyed without knowing the reason, and God used his obedience to bring the Gospel to someone who was ready to hear it. This teaches us that we do not always need to understand God’s plan before we obey His direction. The eu**ch was reading Isaiah but needed someone to guide him, and Philip used that opportunity to preach Jesus. When the eu**ch believed, he immediately responded in faith and was baptized. The encounter shows how God prepares both the messenger and the person who needs to hear the message. Like Philip, we should remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit and willing to go wherever God leads us. Our seemingly small acts of obedience may become significant moments in someone else’s spiritual journey. Be ready to obey, because the next person God brings into your path may be a divine appointment

A Man Who Embraced Correction
Text: Acts 18:24–28

Apollos was an eloquent man, mighty in the Scriptures, fervent in spirit, and bold in teaching. Yet, despite his knowledge and passion, there was still something he did not fully understand. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him speaking, they discerned that his understanding was incomplete. Instead of ignoring the error, they lovingly took him aside and “expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.”

What makes Apollos remarkable was not only his ability to teach, but his willingness to receive correction. He did not allow his knowledge, position, or confidence to make him defensive. He listened, learned, and continued serving God with even greater understanding. Priscilla and Aquila also demonstrated godly discernment—they recognized what needed to be corrected and had the courage and love to help Apollos grow.

This reminds us that correction is not always rejection; sometimes it is God's way of helping us become better equipped for His purpose. We need the humility of Apollos to receive correction and the discernment of Priscilla and Aquila to lovingly correct what is wrong.

Reflection:
Am I humble enough to receive correction when someone points out something I need to change? And do I have enough spiritual discernment and love to gently correct others when necessary?

Prayer:
Lord, give me the humility of Apollos to receive correction and the wisdom of Priscilla and Aquila to recognize and lovingly address what is not right. Help me never to allow pride to prevent me from learning and growing. Make me teachable, discerning, and faithful to Your truth. In Jesus name, Amen.

Listen for His Voice
Text: Isaiah 30:21

Life often gives us many directions. There are voices telling us what to do, opinions telling us where to go, and circumstances that can make us uncertain about our next step. Sometimes, the hardest part is not knowing what is right—but recognizing God's direction in the middle of all the noise.

Isaiah 30:21 gives us a beautiful promise: God guides His children. He does not leave us to figure everything out on our own. When we sincerely seek Him, He is able to direct our steps and remind us, “This is the way, walk ye in it.”

God's guidance may not always come in the dramatic way we expect. Sometimes He speaks through His Word. Sometimes through prayer, wise counsel, circumstances, or a quiet conviction in our hearts that aligns with Scripture.

The important question is not only, “Lord, where should I go?” but also, “Lord, am I willing to follow when You show me the way?”

There may be moments when God tells us to wait. There may be times when He tells us to turn away from something we thought was right. And there will be moments when He simply says, “Keep walking.”

We don't need to know the entire journey before taking the next step. We only need to trust the One who knows the way.

Today, quiet your heart before God. Ask Him to remove the voices that create confusion and help you recognize His voice. Then, when He shows you the way, walk in it with faith and obedience.

Prayer

Father, help me to hear Your voice clearly in the midst of all the voices around me. When I am confused, give me wisdom. When I am afraid, give me courage. When You show me the way, give me the faith to follow, even when I cannot see the whole path. Teach me to trust Your direction and walk faithfully in the way You have prepared for me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

A Family United in Prayer

There is a beautiful saying: “The family that prays together stays together.” While prayer does not mean a family will never face problems, it creates something powerful—it turns the family toward God together.

A family that prays together learns to bring its burdens to the same place: the presence of God. Instead of allowing disagreements, pressures, and disappointments to create distance, prayer reminds us that we have a Father who is greater than every problem we face.

Prayer also teaches us to forgive. It softens our hearts, strengthens our relationships, and helps us see one another not simply through our emotions, but through God's eyes.

Joshua's declaration, “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD,” is more than a statement of personal faith. It is a family commitment. It says, “Whatever happens around us, our family will choose God.”

Your family may not be perfect. You may have different personalities, struggles, and opinions. But when you come together before God, you are reminded of what matters most: you belong to Him, and you need Him.

Don't wait for a crisis before your family prays together.
Pray when things are good.
Pray when things are difficult.
Pray when you have answers.
Pray when you don't know what to do.

Make prayer a family habit, not just an emergency response.

Prayer

Father, thank You for the gift of family. Teach us to seek You together, to forgive one another, to love sacrificially, and to remain united in You. May our home be a place where Your name is honored and Your presence is welcomed. When difficulties come, help us run toward You together rather than allowing problems to divide us. May our family truly be able to say, “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” In Jesus' name, Amen.

The Message of the Book of Haggai

The Book of Haggai is a powerful message about putting God first and returning to Him with a willing heart. After the Israelites returned from exile, they became focused on rebuilding their own houses and lives while neglecting the rebuilding of God’s Temple. Through the prophet Haggai, God challenged them to examine their priorities and reminded them that their struggles were connected to their failure to honor Him. When the people listened, obeyed, and began rebuilding the Temple, God encouraged them with the promise of His presence and greater glory. The book teaches us that when we place God at the center of our lives, obey His calling, and faithfully do His work, we can trust Him to guide, strengthen, and bless us according to His purpose.
