Dominican Republic vs Haiti
Hispaniola is one island. The Dominican Republic and Haiti share it. DR gets ~7 million tourists a year. Haiti gets close to zero. Same beach. Same climate. Same colonial history (almost). Different fates. What created the gap isn't geography. It's a series of decisions, identities, and brand choices that compounded over decades. The lesson for any operator scaling anything is uncomfortable, and unmistakable.

Perspective often changes the size of the jump
In Afghanistan, I spent a day hiking to these surreal lakes with my guide, sharing a picnic and watching him jump from one rock to another.
Up close, the gap looked massive.�From a distance, it didn’t.
That’s how many business decisions feel. The closer you are to uncertainty, the bigger the size of the jump seems. Distance shifts focus from fear to fundamentals.
Sometimes, progress isn’t about pushing harder.�It’s about seeing the situation from the right distance.
And for those wondering, I did not dare to follow them. I just stayed on the verge of the cliff watching.

It took us 3.5 years to reach our first 100 units at .dxb

I still remember that milestone. It felt big. It was big.

But milestones are dangerous if you stay there too long.

You can celebrate, but you can’t let it slow you down.

So when we hit that mark, my mindset wasn’t “let me relax.” It was: “What needs to change to get to 1,000 units?”

Excitement gets you through the sprint. Discipline builds the decade.
