A health worker administers a polio vaccine to a child during a polio vaccination campaign in Kabul.

The campaign is the second since the Taliban seized power in August 2021. Before returning to power, the Taliban had banned vaccinations in areas under their control, but then they agreed to allow such programs under a deal negotiated with the United Nations.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only nations in the world where polio is still endemic.

Translation: Keep your words in check, you are in Mardan.

Context: A man was k!lled by an angry mob at a political rally in Mardan over accusations of blasphemy. The old man had announced before the crowd that a certain political leader was 'worthy of respect, like a Prophet would be'.

This famous signage originally reads: muskariye aap Mardan mein hain! (Smile! You are in Mardan.) However, seems like that isn't the case anymore. People were angered by the incident, calling for an end to mob-justice and public lynching.

The first Afghan/Pashtun girl to be photographed.

This girl was photographed 157 years ago today during the Second Anglo-Afghan war by an Irish photographer named Jan Bork.

The girl is dressed in a traditional white dress and, based on the old traditions of the Pashtun culture, she can be seen wearing silver ornaments on the neck, a nose ring, bangles, necklace and a burqa. The picture depicts the daily life of a common Pashtun during the 18th century.

"I met these Kochis elders in Dasht-e-Abdan Kunduz, No one in sitting persons could read a single paper but the girl (hiding her face) read it and proved that illiteracy is shame not literacy."
