🌐 The service sector in Afghanistan is going digital — but critical skills are still missing.
A 2024 UNESCO study found that employers identified the most significant skill gaps among job seekers in the service industry as:
1️⃣ E-commerce & online business
2️⃣ Digital marketing & social media management
3️⃣ Customer relationship management
🎯 These gaps highlight the urgent need to invest in digital skills development for Afghan youth to contribute to a tech-driven economy.

The new UNESCO Prize for Global Citizenship Education is now open for applications!

The 2025 edition will reward initiatives from around the world harnessing global citizenship education.

We want to hear from you if you are a youth-led organization or an individual, an institution, non-governmental organization or another entity promoting initiatives such as:

➡️ partnerships to facilitate access to education,
➡️ a grassroots movement or a campaign advocating for human rights,
➡️ a cultural heritage project to promote dialogue and understanding,
➡️ an initiative with museums to raise awareness about historical events and promote reconciliation,
➡️ or an education exchange to expand perspectives and knowledge

Two laureates will be selected to receive USD 50,000 each to further their work.

🔧 TVET needs stronger links to the real world of work.
According to a 2024 UNESCO study, employers in Afghanistan identified key gaps in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET):
• ⚙️ Limited practical learning opportunities
• 🧰 Insufficient apprenticeship programmes
• 🤝 Weak connections between TVET institutions and the private sector
• 📉 Skills mismatch between training and market needs
🎯 Bridging these gaps is essential to prepare young people for meaningful employment and to drive economic recovery.

📚 How can students learn without the right tools — and how can teachers teach?
UNESCO research revealed serious gaps in classroom resources:
• 📘 21% of students had no textbooks
• 📒 78% of teachers lacked teacher guidebooks
These shortages make it harder for students to succeed — and for teachers to deliver quality lessons. Combined with low pay and ongoing economic hardship, Afghanistan’s teachers face immense challenges.

📖 55/100 in Dari
📖 39/100 in Pashto
🔢 42/100 in Mathematics

These findings highlight the urgent need for stronger teacher support and continuous professional development.

با حمایت سخاوتمندانۀ کشور‌های نوردیک (دنمارک، فنلند، ایسلند، ناروی، سویدن) یونسکو به سرمایه‌گذاری در آیندۀ زنان افغانستان از مسیر ژورنالیزم ادامه می‌دهد.
در سال 2025، ژورنالیستان زن در یک ورکشاپ جامع توانمندسازی شرکت کردند که بر مهارت های پیشرفته در گزارش نویسی، ویراستاری، ژورنالیزم تحقیقی و دیجیتال، و نیز تأمین امنیت شخصی تمرکز داشت.
این ابتکار در بالا بردن سطح استخدام ژورنالیستان آموزش دیده، استقلالیت دیجیتال و تقویت دید رسانه‌ای آن‌ها در افغانستان کمک می‌کند.
از کشورهای نوردیک برای ایستادگی در کنار زنان افغانستان و آزادی رسانه‌ها سپاسگزاریم.

زده‌کړه د هر انسان بنسټیز حق او د ملي پرمختګ لپاره یوه مهمه زېربنا ده. د نوردیک هېوادونه، چې پکې ډنمارک، فنلنډ، آیسلنډ، ناروې او سویډن شامل دي، له ډېرو کلونو راهیسې افغانستان کې د یونسکو د تعلیمي پروګرامونو لپاره په مستقیم توګه او یا د CapED او STFA پروګرامونو له لاري ژمن او ملاتړي پاتې شوي دي.
د دغو هېوادونو په ملاتړ، یونېسکو وتوانېده چې په ۲۰۲۳ او ۲۰۲۴ کلونو کې له ۱۶٬۰۰۰ څخه ډېرو کسانو ته په ۱۱ ولایتونو کې د لیک لوست او حساب کولو مهارتونه ور زده کړي. همدارنګه، د غیر رسمي حرفوي زده‌کړو لپاره د کیفیت ارزونې چوکاټ (QAF) او څو نورې علمي څېړنې هم تر سره شوې، چې د راتلونکو پالیسیو او پروګرام جوړونو لپاره لار نوره هم هواره شي.
د نوردیک د هېوادونو په ملاتړ یونېسکو وکولی شول، چې د ځواکمنتیا او پیاوړي کېدو په بهیر کې د افغانستان د خلکو لاس نیوی وکړي، او هغوي د کورني معیشت د ودې او مالي خپلواکۍ په لور وهڅوي.

Education is a fundamental human right and a foundation for national development. Nordic countries including Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden have been long-time committed supporters of UNESCO’s education initiatives in Afghanistan through bilateral contribution and/or multi-donor funds such as CapED and STFA.
With their support, UNESCO empowered over 16,000 individuals across 11 provinces with literacy and numeracy in 2023-2024. Technical instruments like the Quality Assessment Framework (QAF) for non-formal TVET and multiple education-related research were also developed to support evidence-based interventions.
The support from Nordic countries made it possible for UNESCO to empower the people of Afghanistan, helping them uplift their families and work towards economic independence.
