Title: Afghanistan in the Grip of Regional Politics and a Legitimacy Crisis: Examining the Challenges of Opposition Coalitions and the Future of Governance
Introduction:
The fall of the republican system in Afghanistan and the establishment of the Taliban's Emirate have plunged the country's political scene into a complex phase of internal, regional, and international competition. In this context, recent efforts to form coalitions opposing the Taliban have raised important questions in diplomatic circles: Can these coalitions play an effective role in changing the balance of power? And what scenarios are conceivable for the future of governance in Afghanistan? This article, with an analytical approach, examines the various dimensions of these questions within the framework of diplomacy and international relations.

Analysis of the Taliban's Power Structure and Regional Dynamics
The Taliban,by controlling nearly the entire territory of Afghanistan, have practically established themselves as the main actor in the country's arena. However, their government faces challenges to its domestic and international legitimacy. From a diplomatic perspective, the Taliban are pursuing a multi-faceted strategy:
•Diversifying foreign relations: Establishing simultaneous contacts with competing regional actors (such as China, Russia, Iran, and Pakistan) and seeking to attract investment in infrastructure and mines.
•Utilizing security leverage: Presenting themselves as guarantors of stability against threats like ISIS, which is significant for neighboring countries and the West.
•Controlling economic resources: Attempting to manage revenues from transit, agriculture, and minerals, although sanctions are a major obstacle in this path.
This strategy has placed the Taliban in a position where they can ensure their short-term survival, but their inability to form an inclusive government and respect human rights has prevented international recognition.

Opposition Coalitions: Limitations and Diplomatic Challenges
The formation of coalitions opposing the Taliban primarily occurs outside Afghanistan. These coalitions face the following structural limitations:
•Lack of a domestic popular base: Many leaders of these coalitions live abroad and have lost direct connection with internal developments in Afghanistan.
•Dependence on external support: The coalitions are often reliant on support from regional or international countries pursuing their own objectives. This dependence undermines their operational independence and domestic legitimacy.
•Ideological and ethnic fragmentation: The opponents of the Taliban include a spectrum from secular groups to moderate Islamists and various ethnic factions, making it difficult to build consensus among them.
From a diplomatic perspective, the international community deals with these coalitions cautiously because:
•It is reluctant to intensify internal conflict in Afghanistan.
•It accepts the Taliban as the existing reality on the ground.
•Its main priorities are managing humanitarian crises and preventing cross-border security threats.

Probable Scenarios from an International Relations Perspective
•Scenario One: Gradual Consolidation of the Taliban Emirate
In this scenario, despite the lack of international recognition, the Taliban gradually reach understandings with regional countries and gain de facto legitimacy. Opposition coalitions are marginalized, and their role is limited to political and media activities abroad.
•Scenario Two: Escalation of Crisis and Emergence of Armed Resistance
If internal repression intensifies or rifts emerge within the Taliban, space may open for the formation of armed resistance. In this case, opposition coalitions could play a role if they secure regional support, but this scenario could lead to prolonged civil war and regional instability.
•Scenario Three: National Dialogue with International Mediation
The international community may use economic and political leverage to push the Taliban toward forming an inclusive government. In this case, some opposition figures could be included within a political process. This scenario requires agreement among regional and international actors.

Policy Recommendations for International Actors
•Prioritizing Multilateral Diplomacy: The international community should work more coherently with regional actors to exert more effective and realistic pressure on the Taliban.
•Supporting Domestic Civil Society: Instead of focusing solely on coalitions based outside, opportunities should be created to strengthen internal Afghan institutions (including women, youth, and minorities).
•Smart Conditionality in Engagement with the Taliban: Making any assistance or recognition conditional on progress in human rights, forming an inclusive government, and severing ties with terrorist groups.
•Avoiding Military Escalation: Supporting a military option should be considered as a last resort, as it could deepen the humanitarian crisis.

Conclusion:
The opposition coalitions to the Taliban,in their current form, are unable to bring about fundamental change in Afghanistan due to their internal limitations and dependence on external support. The future of the country depends more on internal developments within the Taliban, the diplomatic engagement of the international community, and the ability of Afghans to find a national compromise. A sustainable solution will not be possible through civil war, but rather through a political process supported by the region and the world. The role of diplomacy in this is to create space for dialogue and prevent another catastrophe.
