👩🏽‍🍳 Meet Junior Chef #8: Justine Griffin from the Sir McChesney George Secondary School and her Chef Mentor, Guven Uyanik, Executive Chef at Galley Bay Resort and Spa.

As part of the Taste of Wadadli Junior Chef Academy 2026, Justine will begin her culinary internship journey, gaining hands-on experience in a professional kitchen, building her skills, and learning from industry expert Chef Guven Uyanik.

📅 Programme Timeline:
👩🏽‍🍳 Internship Period: July 13 – August 21, 2026
🍽️ Cook-Off Competition: August 25 – 28, 2026
🎓 Closing Ceremony: September 3, 2026

🏆 At the end of the programme, one outstanding Junior Chef will be selected as the top Junior Chef and will receive the opportunity to represent Antigua & Barbuda at the Junior Lit’l Chef Camp in Turks and Caicos in 2027 in partnership with Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association.

Follow Justine’s journey as she develops her passion for culinary arts and takes her first steps toward becoming a future hospitality professional.

The Taste of Wadadli Junior Chef Academy 2026, is presented by the Antigua & Barbuda Hotels and Tourism Association (ABHTA), the Ted Isaac Family, and Global Ports Holding (Antigua Cruise Port).

GREAT BAY--Environmental Protection in the Caribbean (EPIC) has officially opened entries for the Seas & Scenes: Love the Caribbean Photo Contest 2026, a month-long event celebrating the vibrant culture and natural beauty of the region. Running from August 1 through August 31, 2026, the contest is free to enter and open to photographers of all skill levels.

There are so many stories still untold about slavery and in the the West Indies (Caribbean). & we need to remember because erasure about chattel slavery in the region by the Dutch, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and, in our case, English (about our stories and identities generally) becomes bigger the smaller we are. When we too are Black; we too are separated from our ancestral homeland and don't know our point of origin; we too endured hundreds of years of human trafficking legally until the act against the trade in 1807, illegally thereafter; we too endured the horrors of life robbed of any humanity legally until the legal end of slavery in 1834 in the case of Antigua and Barbuda, 1838 after apprenticeship elsewhere in the British West Indies; and the post-slavery indignities under the contract act and other restrictions and downpressing that didn't truly begin to change until the 20th century through the labour movements, independence movements, and continues... On the night that they waited, I'm going to link in the comments some of the writing I've done on slavery which seems appropriate for Emancipation Day Eve (Watch Night in Antigua and Barbuda). & tomorrow August 1st remember to acknowledge the ancestors some kinda how; to remember that we stand on their shoulders every day - because they were, we are; and to amplify the push for

“The control and exploitation of natural resources are dramatically altering the causes, dynamics and outcomes of conflict,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres tells the Security Council.

The growing demand for critical minerals - such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and rare earth elements - presents opportunities for development, but their illicit exploitation is also fuelling conflict and suffering.

The Secretary-General called for action to transform how natural resources are extracted and used - ensuring they benefit producing countries and affected communities, not armed groups and criminal networks.

“No more exploitation. No more plundering.”
