In a surprising move, a United Progressive Party (UPP) Senator has publicly backed the governmentโ€™s decision to transfer ownership of Jolly Beach Resort to the Social Security Scheme, citing the long-term economic and social benefits of the deal. The endorsement has dealt a political blow to UPP stalwarts Harold Lovell, Gisele Isaac, and fellow opposition parliamentarians, who had strongly criticized the arrangement. Observers say the Senatorโ€™s support exposes divisions within the party and underscores the growing recognition that the transfer could secure jobs, protect pensions, and revitalize one of Antiguaโ€™s most iconic properties.

Former UPP leader Harold Lovell is trying hard to sell the idea of a political comeback, but his latest stunt in All Saints West has left more questions than answers.

In a post dripping with self-praise, Lovell claimed he met with 20 young people for a โ€œyouth listening sessionโ€ that he boldly described as โ€œa great success.โ€ Yet not a single photo, not a single video, and not a single shred of proof was offered. His excuse? The youths allegedly refused to be photographed.

That says it all. When young people donโ€™t want to be seen standing next to a politician, it isnโ€™t respect for โ€œprivacy.โ€ Itโ€™s rejection. Itโ€™s embarrassment. And itโ€™s a clear message that Harold Lovell is out of touch and unwanted.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environment, and Civil Service Affairs joined with staff at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Center to honour the men and women who serve as orderlies within the nationโ€™s healthcare system. Senator the Honourable Michael Joseph, Junior Minister of Health, delivered the keynote address during a special ceremony to celebrate Orderlies Appreciation Day 2025.

The event brought together healthcare workers and administrators to acknowledge the dedication and sacrifice of orderlies, whose roles are often unseen but indispensable to the daily functioning of hospitals and clinics.

In his address, Senator Joseph described orderlies as the โ€œbackbone of the health system,โ€ praising them for their steadfast service in ensuring that patients receive care with dignity and compassion.

"You may not always wear a white coat or stand in front of a parliament, but the work you do matters. It matters to our patients, it matters to their families, and it matters to the Ministry of Health. Without you, the smooth functioning of our hospitals and clinics would be impossible,โ€ he said.

The Junior Minister reflected on his own professional journey, beginning as a volunteer with the Red Cross, later serving as a pharmacist, and ultimately becoming a Senator and Junior Minister of Health. He encouraged orderlies to view their current roles as stepping stones, urging them to embrace opportunities for growth and advancement within the health sector.

โ€œWhere you start does not have to determine where you finish. Each position, each role, is a stepping stone. What matters most is how you use the opportunity youโ€™ve been given,โ€ he emphasized.

Senator Joseph went on to highlight the special responsibility orderlies carry as the first and sometimes last point of contact for patients. He underscored the impact of simple acts of kindness, reminding attendees that healthcare is not only about medicine and treatment, but also about human connection.

โ€œA doctor can prescribe medicine, a nurse can administer treatment, but the healing process often begins with something far simpler: kindness. A smile. A word of encouragement. A respectful attitude. Never underestimate the power of compassion in healthcare,โ€ he added.

The ceremony also celebrated orderlies for their role in maintaining the efficiency and humanity of healthcare delivery. Senator Joseph stressed that beyond their practical responsibilitiesโ€”transporting patients, assisting medical staff, and supporting hospital operationsโ€”orderlies are integral to creating a culture of care.

He concluded his remarks with a strong message of respect and encouragement:

โ€œToday, we honour you not only for what you do, but for who you are: essential members of our healthcare family. You are valued. You are respected. And you are capable of achieving greatness. The work you do today is laying the foundation for the leader you can become tomorrow.โ€

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the training and development of orderlies, ensuring that they continue to receive opportunities for growth in alignment with the governmentโ€™s broader vision for a modern, people-centered healthcare system.

Orderlies Appreciation Day 2025 at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre was marked by expressions of gratitude from hospital leadership, healthcare professionals, and patients, who commended orderlies for their daily contributions and unwavering dedication to service.

Police have arrested and charged 30-year-old Anthony Joe of Cassada Gardens for the theft of coconuts and avocados from a property in Crosbies.
Joe is accused of stealing three bunches of coconuts valued at $500 and a quantity of avocados valued at $400 from the property of an elderly man sometime between August 28 and 29.
Investigations revealed that the intruder allegedly gained access to the property through several holes discovered in the perimeter fence.
Following inquiries, Joe was arrested and formally charged in connection with the offence. He is expected to appear before the court sometime next week.
The Police Administration is reminding the public that praedial larceny remains a serious offence that not only impacts farmers and property owners but also threatens the nationโ€™s agricultural sector and food security.
Authorities continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station without delay.

It is remarkable to watch how the tides are turning in the ABLP. The institution appears to be marching toward self-destruction, led by its Party Chairman, the MP for St. Paul, Hon. E. P. Chet Greene.

In the light of day and on Friday nights, Chet executes his duties. He works to ensure that party candidates and activists work to uphold the party platform and support policy positions and charts an agenda aligned with the partyโ€™s goals.

But in recent times, by night and on Sundays, he sponsors sabotage of the same charman-like duties, leading to the undermining of his political party through his privately owned radio station, in some noble crusade for โ€œbalance.โ€

Has he forgotten that his duties also include negotiating internal conflict in the party and being the chief advocate of the partyโ€™s message,
This โ€œbalanceโ€ at WTP provides a regular, unregulated platform for dissenting voices to speak out loudly against the ABLPโ€™s vision, directly contrasting with the party chair's role. What is being celebrated as โ€œfearless independenceโ€ is in really reckless indulgence. WTP should be a party asset, but it has become a platform for internal sabotage. WTP is now a vehicle biting the very hands that feed the owner.
How can the chairman reconcile standing by, hand up high, while his own station becomes a megaphone for tearing down the very movement he is chosen to protect?

There must be more in that mortar, but whatever it is, ABLP top brass should pay keen attention urgently. This notion of media independence may well be the hidden Trojan horse, filled with an army to wipe out the ABLP at the right psychological moment.

If Chairman Chet wonโ€™t hearโ€ฆ.

Letter to the Editor

It is becoming more and more obvious that some people in this country cannot stand to see progress unless they are the ones controlling it. The attacks being made against Daren Mathew Ward since he began hosting radio shows on WTP are nothing short of jealousy, envy, and a naked grab for control.

For too long, the airwaves have been used as weapons to advance narrow partisan agendas. Now, finally, there is a voice prepared to give all sides a fair hearing, something that appeals directly to the large group of voters who sit in the middle, undecided and tired of the constant bickering. That is precisely why Mr. Wardโ€™s non partisan approach is so threatening to those who thrive on division.

Let us be clear, any effort to silence him is not about standards or principles. It is about fear, fear of a broadcaster who cannot be bought, boxed in, or dictated to. The louder the critics shout, the more they expose themselves as being threatened by a simple idea, Balance.

And this is exactly what sets WTP apart from Rum Shop Radio, which thrives on character assassination and one sided propaganda. WTP is not a rum shop, it is serious broadcasting that respects the intelligence of the people. The truth is, Rum Shop Radio fears losing relevance because WTP is giving voters something they have long been denied, real balance and open dialogue.

Instead of wasting energy trying to undermine him, perhaps his detractors should ask themselves why fair and open dialogue bothers them so much. The answer is obvious, they prefer control over conversation and manipulation over truth.

Sincerely,
Leave DMW Alone

What was supposed to be a show of strength by the United Progressive Party (UPP) outside Parliament yesterday turned into an embarrassing flop, as only six people turned up to protest the motion to transfer Jolly Beach Hotel to the Antigua and Barbuda Social Security Board.
The dismal turnout exposed the partyโ€™s dwindling influence and failure to connect with the public, despite repeated calls for mass mobilization. Instead of a crowd, the protest resembled a handful of stragglers, leaving government MPs to press ahead with the motion unchallenged.
The spectacle has fueled questions about whether the UPP can rally meaningful support on issues of national importance, or whether the party has simply lost its ability to move the people it claims to represent.

In an act of shocking cruelty, a terminally ill cancer patient at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre had his mobile phone stolen while lying on his deathbed. When the government unveiled plans for a chicken and egg farm to rehabilitate former gang members, the initiative was hailed as a groundbreaking project to transform lives and reduce crime. Thousands of chicks were imported, land was reportedly cleared, and funds were allocated for training and infrastructure. Months later, however, the public is left in the dark.
Where is the farm that was promised? Was anything ever built on the site that taxpayers funded? Who were the contractors or individuals paid to prepare the land, and what exactly was delivered in return? And most importantly, where are the chickens that were said to belong to the State?
These are not idle questions. They cut to the heart of accountability in government spending. If money was spent, the people deserve to see the results. If the project has collapsed, then a full report should explain why. Silence and secrecy only fuel suspicion of corruption and mismanagement.
