Miami. For so many reasons, this town has part of my heart and soul. Like watching a dozen movies at the same time, in every genre, every language, both black and white and in vivid color, in seemingly a days time I have indulged in the finest raw oysters and caviar I’ve ever had at the harbor, stood on the steps where one of the most influential designers in the world took his last breath, sailed with strangers and new friends on a 100’ yacht, found and lost my heart, written the beginnings of a short story both on the sky rail and the city bus, eaten Cuban street food from the back of a rusty old Chevy truck, compiled content for my first book that I didn’t even know I needed, executed amazing underwater and model photoshoots with some powerfully heavy talent in front of my lens, walked along some of the most beautiful streets in the country, belonging to the gods of fashion; Chanel, YSL, Gucci, Versace as well as Lamborghini and Ferrari, seeing all of their finest new offerings, and only a short few blocks away, in shocking contrast, saw the beautiful and soulful art, the dark dealings and almost forgotten destruction of the projects of Little Haiti and Overtown, and gloved up for a couple rounds in one of the most motivational boxing gyms in the country. This last trip had it’s ups and downs, definitely a rollercoaster. But I took the time to explore places like I’d never seen, talked to amazing people I didn’t even know existed, networked with and befriended some extraordinary humans, and it was enlightening to say the very least. I come back humbled by the amazing people that have embraced me as they would family, the famous and nameless art that I have had the pleasure of viewing, and I am inspired on levels I didn’t know possible. Often I second guess my lack of desire to stick with one art medium. One specific photography style. But Miami has reaffirmed my belief that art is life. All of it. The good with the bad. The vibrant and powerful with the dark and reserved. I am so very thankful for every piece of this beautiful journey. Of both self and location. And a better place to derive inspiration for the second issue of The Industry Magazine just doesn’t exist. I cannot wait to share it with all of you.

“Contrast” .. image from a downtown Miami homeless camp.

As I’ve said. Miami is quickly becoming my home-away-from-home. I am mesmerized. Today while the little and I were on the metrorail train from Little Havana to the downtown business district, the memory of my first trip here came flooding back after years of being absent from my thoughts. I was 5 or 6 I guess. Craziness at home and between my mom and dad had gotten to an unbearable place. That little and I was so on edge. All the time. I had a nanny named Doris. She was AMAZING and a huge part of my life and why it didn’t fall completely apart. I don’t recall the reasoning behind it, other than the obvious mental rescue mission, or even if she’d gotten permission. But she took me on a train from Lexington, Ky. To Miami. I don’t remember all of it. But I remember the Zoo. The intensity of the aquatic animals. The welcoming heat. And the peace of mind. Happiness almost. Something I wasn’t entirely used to back then. I am grateful for that trip, and for the memories.
Flash forward almost 20 years, I found my home on the streets. Of anywhere. Hitchhiking and hopping trains across the country, getting drunk and high as a kite on whatever I could get my dirty hands on. But somehow, oddly at peace.
This image, at first glance, gives the feel of inequality. Poverty and hunger under the nose of extreme wealth and power with very little buffer in between. As it should. But for some of us, not many, but some, that homeless camp, that shopping cart, that life is symbolic of something darkly beautiful. And comfortable. Much love🖤

Day 1: Miami.
I’ve fallen in love with this city. Like I’ve only felt in a handful of places in my life, this town feels like home. It feels like art. A living, breathing sculpture from a different time and place. The Art Deco district isn’t just an area filled with amazing galleries, architecture and boutique style hotels, but intricate details reminiscent of the 30’s and 40’s blues movement, the extreme influence of a new Hollywood, gangsters and Dames. A walk down the streets of South Beach, standing on the stairs that Pacino wielded the infamous chainsaw, sitting on a stoop inches from the very spot where Versace, an art GOD in the fashion world took his last breath, and the gutters laden in the same garb as Bourbon Street, N.O., makes my imagination literally explode in a new and fresh way that won’t be leaving me anytime soon.🖤
