๐Ÿšฆ TRAFFIC ADVISORY โ€“ PEDESTRIAN & ANIMAL ROAD SAFETY
Royal Anguilla Police Force โ€“ Traffic Department

The Royal Anguilla Police Force Traffic Department reminds all road users of the safety requirements outlined in the Highway Code relating to pedestrians, horse riders, and animals on public roadways. These rules are critical for reducing collisions and protecting lives.

๐Ÿ‘ฃ PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

Visibility
Pedestrians must remain clearly visible, particularly at night or in low-light conditions:

- Wear reflective vests or jackets
- Choose bright or light-colored clothing
- Use reflective armbands or ankle bands
- Carry a flashlight where possible

Walking on the Road
When no sidewalk is available:

- Walk facing oncoming traffic
- Keep to the right-hand edge of the roadway
- Walk in single file on narrow roads
- Exercise caution around bends and blind corners

Crossing Safety
- Look both ways before crossing
- Never step suddenly into moving traffic
- Take care when crossing near or from behind parked vehicles
- Ensure the roadway is completely clear

๐ŸŽ HORSES & ANIMALS ON PUBLIC ROADS

Rider Responsibilities
Horse riders must:

- Ensure horses are fit, trained, and under full control
- Be competent riders
- Wear appropriate safety gear including:
>Helmets
>Sturdy footwear
>High-visibility clothing

Riding at Night
At night or in reduced visibility:

- Riders must wear reflective clothing
- Horses should be fitted with reflective leg or rein bands
- Carry a light where practical

Horse Behavior
Horses may:

- Become frightened by headlights or loud noises
- Move unpredictably or close to vehicles
- Riders must maintain safe control at all times.

๐Ÿš— DRIVER RESPONSIBILITIES โ€” PEDESTRIANS & ANIMALS

Drivers are reminded that they share the roadway with vulnerable users and must remain alert at all times.

Drivers must:

- Slow down and maintain safe speeds, especially at night
- Look out for pedestrians walking along road edges, near junctions, or crossing the roadway
- Stay alert for horses and other animals near or crossing the road
- Avoid horns or loud noises near animals
- Give ample space when passing pedestrians, riders, or animals
- Be prepared to stop if a pedestrian, rider, or animal appears at risk

๐Ÿ„ OTHER ANIMALS

Handlers transporting or leading animals such as donkeys, cattle, goats, or sheep must:

- Keep animals properly controlled at all times
- Use reflective equipment at night, especially on major roads

โš ๏ธ NOTE TO ANIMAL OWNERS

Animal owners are reminded that they are legally responsible for keeping animals properly secured and controlled at all times.
Allowing animals to roam freely on public roadways places motorists, pedestrians, riders, and the animals themselves at serious risk.
Owners will be held accountable for collisions or injuries caused by loose or uncontrolled animals.

โœ… Visibility saves lives.
Share the road. Protect each other.
