Այստեղ է, որ հասկացա աշխարհի օրենքը և ավելի լավ ճանաչեցի մարդուն...
Այստեղ է, որ ստեղծվեցին իմ լավագույն գործերը, որպեսզի նվիրեմ նրանց, ովքեր ինձ մոռացել էին իմ մենության մեջ...

Աշխարհում միշտ բաց են եղել
Դռներս կրնկի վրա…
Ելնողին չեմ ասել՝ արի՛,

According to the testimony of the Armenian historian of the 5th century Favstos Buzand, the church of Amaras Monastery was founded at the beginning of the 4th century of St. Gregory the Illuminator.
Amaras became best known in the middle of the 4th century, after the grandson of St. John was buried here. Gregory the Illuminator. Gregory died in South Dagestan, according to some reports in 337, others in 348, and was buried on the east side of the church.

At the beginning of the V century, the creator of the Armenian alphabet is St. Mesrop Mashtots founded the first Armenian school in Amaras, from there the distribution in the field of Armenian literature began.

Since the 5th century, Amaras has become one of the largest religious centers of medieval Armenia.

In 821, Amaras, like the whole region, was conquered by Arabs in the XIII century. plundered by the Mongols, and destroyed in 1387 during the invasion of Tamerlan.
However, the monastery with a constantly functioning school has always remained a religious and cultural center.

The monastery was thoroughly reconstructed in the 17th century. Catholicos Petros in the second quarter of the XVII century restored Amaras, having built a church of St. John here. Gregorisa.

In the second half of the XIX century, after the annexation of Eastern Armenia to Russia, the Amaras monastery complex, which has quite a heavily reinforced defensive structures, was used as a border fortress, and in 1832-1844 it was a Russian-Persian customs.

In 1848, under the Metropolitan of Ter-Baghdasar, Amaras was returned to the Armenian Church.
Unlike the church itself, the monastery's defensive walls and civil buildings remained without significant damage.
In 1858, using the funds of the Shushin Armenians, a new monastery church was built here on an old, damaged site. A tombstone of St. was installed in her northern neef. Grigorisa, made by Shushin architect Michael Ter-Israeli in 1898.
It is now occupied by Azerbaijan.
