Meet our next international intern, Lola Medina! 🎉

Born and raised near Barcelona, Lola studied Journalism, Media and Publishing at Oxford Brookes University. There, she developed a passion for international affairs, geopolitics, and, above all, the human stories behind them. Lola’s especially drawn to multimedia storytelling, from print and podcasts to video. 🎙️✍️

She has gained experience at Prospect Magazine and The Wychwood Magazine and co-hosted the student-run Brookes Podcast during her studies. Most recently, Lola interned at Barcelona-based newspaper Diari ARA, covering the city and the issues shaping it.

Now, she’s bringing her curiosity and multimedia journalism experience to Armenia, where she’ll be reporting with EVN Report.

What does it mean to return home when so many others are leaving?

For poet Beglar Chragyan, it means returning to Javakhk, Georgia.

In a new article for CivilNet, TAP intern Anton Geissler speaks with Chragyan about poetry, identity, returning home, and the challenge of preserving meaning when translating Armenian poetry.

Born in Akhalkalaki and now working as a software engineer for Georgia’s Ministry of Education, Chragyan is also the author of five poetry collections. His latest, Light from Chaos, explores philosophy, love, and the tension between the material and spiritual worlds.

After moving to Yerevan as a teenager, studying economics and computer science, and later working in Bangkok, Chragyan returned to Javakhk in 2023. He says his decision was driven by his love for the region, its nature, and its mountains.

Firebird AI’s new data center in Hrazdan is already operating, with plans for a major expansion that could transform Armenia’s energy landscape.

In his article for EVN Report, TAP intern Luan Rogers examines what this ambitious project could mean for Armenia’s environment as the country positions itself as a regional AI hub.

The expansion brings opportunities for the country, but also raises questions about its environmental impact: how can Armenia pursue technological growth without compromising its environmental future?

In a new article for Հետք, TAP intern Anton Geissler explores the journey of Armenian manuscripts returning back to their homeland.

This summer, the Matenadaran, Armenia’s renowned research institute and museum for written heritage, received a 17th-century manuscript and nine printed books from the historic Hrant Samuelian bookstore in Paris.

Anton explores the stories behind the donations, the journeys these texts have taken, and the debate over what it really means for Armenian heritage to “come home.”

Some of the texts originated outside modern Armenia’s borders, raising a larger question: does Armenian heritage belong to a place, a country, or a wider linguistic and cultural community?

TAP intern Mohamad Rimawi traveled to Fioletovo, home to Armenia’s Molokan community, for CIVILNET.

The Molokans were exiled from Russia over 150 years ago. For generations, they’ve stayed out of politics and away from outsiders but found refuge in Armenia.

That’s starting to change. Mohamad writes about his conversation with Alexey Sandikov, Armenia’s first Molokan lawmaker, who said that many in the community are “not familiar with procedures on how to deal with local government or state ministries.”

Beneath the cliffs of southern Armenia lies the Areni 1 cave, the world’s oldest intact winery dating back to 4100 BC, that is until the Soviets tried to erase it. Since independence, Armenia has been reclaiming its viticulture heritage and rebuilding its wine making identity, one vineyard at a time.

That’s the story Isabella Miller (Isabella Miller) shared with Go World Travel, also featured on an episode of the podcast Passport to the World.

In this episode we hear about a winemaker who gives his wines their own personalities, a hidden cellar where wine has remained a secret for decades, and a nation turning generations of loss into ownership and pride of the new portfolio of wines.

TAP intern Isaac Stephenson explored Armenia’s “forgotten” third city Vanadzor for EVN Report. There Stephenson met craftsmen and artisans keeping the creative scene alive.

One of them is Samvel, a painter who runs a small shop full of Soviet memorabilia and traditional crafts. The other is Bogdan, an energetic and beloved stone mason known as a khachkar maker (see photo above) who has been invited to share his work in the United States.

Isaac also stopped by a leather workshop run by a young couple, Gohar and Avetis. Their studio is the usual hangout spot for local artists where Gohar also manages one of Armenia’s most popular rockbands, Lav Eli.

Their stories show Vanadzor full of craft, community and creativity.

Ever wonder who’s actually paying for the ads you scroll past on YouTube?

TAP intern Anton Geissler dug into a religious ad campaign quietly flooding screens in Armenia for CIVILNET. It includes more than 200 videos paid for by a Utah-based media firm.

According to Geissler, there’s no regulation in Armenia for foreign advertisers on social media, and this campaign is a clear example of it.

TAP intern Mohamad Rimawi landed an exclusive interview with Armenia’s Ambassador to the U.S. Narek Mkrtchyan for CIVILNET and got him talking about some of the biggest developments shaping Armenia’s future.

Mkrtchyan says there are “no serious obstacles” to the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), with construction potentially beginning soon. He also discusses how the project could strengthen economic ties between Armenia and Azerbaijan and create greater incentives for lasting peace.

And that’s not all. With San Francisco-based AI company Firebird planning a $4 billion project in Armenia, Mkrtchyan explains why growing U.S.-Armenia ties in AI could have implications far beyond business, including for Armenia’s security.

Meet our next international intern, Jan Limburski 🎉

Born and raised in Wrocław, Poland, Jan first studied Arabic and Persian before completing an MPhil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies at Oxford. He served as one of the Managing Editors of the Oxford Middle East Review, where he put together its latest issue, themed "Reconstruction." His most recent research explored heritage-led urban transformation in modern Uzbekistan.

Jan is no stranger to Armenia. He first studied at YSU back in 2022, and now returns to Yerevan this summer to report with Urbanista / Ուրբանիստա and CivilNet
