My wife Claire and I tried for years to have a baby. When that didn’t work, she suggested adoption, and it felt right. After months of waiting, we finally met Sophie — a bright-eyed little girl who had been in foster care since infancy. From the very first day, she clung to us, calling us Mommy and Daddy before it was even official.
One month after bringing her home, I came back from work and Sophie came running, wrapping her arms around my legs. Her small voice trembled.
“I don’t wanna leave.”
Confused, I knelt down. “Leave to where, sweetheart?”
Her lips shook as tears filled her eyes. “I don’t wanna go away again. I wanna stay with you and Mommy.”
A cold chill ran through me. I stroked her hair and told her, “That won’t happen.” But then Claire stepped into the hallway. Her face was pale, her expression hard.
“We need to talk.”
I sent Sophie to her room, telling her everything was fine. She nodded, still sniffling, and closed the door. I could feel her little heart racing when I hugged her.
The moment she was gone, Claire looked straight at me and said quietly, “We need to give her back.”
I froze, sure I had misheard. “What did you just say?”
