Sleep well Tony Langsford - a gem of a lad with a love of Rave and Radio running through his veins
We were sending each other voice notes as recently as Monday - and I was hoping we'd have another long phone chat (like we did a few weeks ago)
From Kiss 103, Pulse 103, Q95, Hot 107 to running his own Dance stations and everything in between - Tony was an Irish Dance Radio legend
Many years ago - maybe 1999 - Tony and I were talking about going halves on setting up a Radio station in Gran Canaria (at the time you could buy a Radio license there and do it legally)
I ultimately chose to stay in Dublin, but Tony pushed ahead with it and was a huge success there. I'll link a vid below of his Gran Canaria station - with Tony's great voice shining through on a promo Ad
In the DJ business I always say you have dozens and dozens of colleagues - but just a handful or so of real friends. Tony was a friend - someone I've had hours of great conversations with over the years
I would be doing my exercise walks in the Phoenix Park on the phone to him, he'd be sipping on a beer in his new home in Fuerteventura watching the sun go down - and, in between, we'd talk about everything from Radio, music and him convincing me to move over there too
I'm glad he got to live his last few years in the sunshine with both his amazing wife Laura and his pirate Radio buddy - Gary Cruise
A few weeks ago, when I knew he hadn't much time left, I sent him 15 or so questions about his long DJ history
The aim was to help put together a "Rave and Radio" eulogy - filling in the gaps of the many stations he worked on, his favourite gigs etc
Unfortunately, his illness was too bad to complete it. I think it was affecting his memory, among many things
But - thankfully - his friends and family are lighting up social media with stories about Tony and a lot of those questions are being answered, with tales of Tony's many Radio and Club escapades
There's been so many tributes already, with many thanking Tony for training them in on Radio mixing desks (that was a lovely few words from Dec Pierce) and others thanking Tony for their start in the industry
I'm also glad Dean Sherry once interviewed Tony on Phever FM in 2017 - asking him about his history in the DJ business
The interview (which I'll link below) actually answers many of those 15 questions I sent to Tony. It's a great listen that encapsulates the passion Tony had for the business
We will miss your cheekiness, your chats and your passion for all things Radio and Rave, Tony
Have a nice sleep buddy ❤️
