Samoa: LAST CALL: July 16 is the final day for public comments on the proposal to allow seabed mining in our territorial waters off the coast of Muliava (Rose Atoll) American Samoa

📢 Let your voice be heard
🚫 Say NO to seabed mining

NO to seabed mining because it is our right — the people of American Samoa — to decide what happens in our waters. That right was established in the Deeds of Cession of Tutuila and Manu’a. Not the federal government.

NO to seabed mining because it will poison the marine ecosystem that feeds our people. Our subsistence and commercial fishing will suffer from toxic plumes that contaminate the ocean floor and everything that lives there.

NO to seabed mining because it disrupts the ocean’s ability to regulate carbon, contributing to global warming and making climate change even worse.

NO to seabed mining because the noise and light pollution from these operations will destroy ocean life and disturb delicate underwater habitats.

NO to seabed mining because there are still other ways to get minerals on land, and smarter ways to use the resources we already have.

NO to seabed mining because innovation is already making this kind of extraction unnecessary. Clean technologies are advancing faster than ever.

NO to seabed mining because our ocean floor may hold untapped breakthroughs for science, health, and medicine. That potential is worth far more than short-term profit.

NO to seabed mining because the money will not go to our local economy. It will benefit the federal government, not the people of American Samoa. Not jobs for the local people.

NO to seabed mining because studies have shown it can take decades for any recovery. In the Peru Basin, the ocean floor still has not healed.

NO to seabed mining because never in history have Indigenous peoples truly benefited from the exploitation of their land or waters. Never!

Samoan Community Worldwide is not against progress. We are for protection. We are for preservation. We are for the future of our ocean and the future generations of our islands.
