He had about 45 minutes.
Going home to shower meant missing half of his 3-year-old son's first basketball experience.
So Michael McGuire went straight from the coal mine.
In October 2022, he finished his shift in eastern Kentucky and drove directly to the University of Kentucky's Blue-White scrimmage in Pikeville. Still in his work clothes. Face and clothes covered in coal dust.
But he made it in time to sit beside his son, Easton.
Someone in the arena took a photo of them together. It went viral.
It reached Kentucky head coach John Calipari, and it hit him personally. Calipari said his own family's American story began in a coal mine in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
He invited Michael and his family to Rupp Arena as VIPs. And he followed through.
A few weeks later, Kentucky's official team bus picked up 14 members of the McGuire family and brought them to the Wildcats' game against Duquesne. They sat behind the bench. Michael was brought onto the court to serve as the honorary "Y" during the Kentucky cheer.
But the part that made the photo resonate happened before any of that.
A dad finished work dirty and tired. He had somewhere else he could have gone first.
Instead, he showed up.
