In 2000, His Holiness the Great 14th Dalai Lama, Gyälwa Rinpoche, conferred the Kalachakra Initiation at a monastery in the Spiti region. On that occasion, he consecrated the table on which the sand mandala would be constructed with a traditional Kalachakra dance.

The Kalachakra Initiation is connected to the prophecy of Shambhala, the mystical realm of enlightened beings, which will bring a thousand years of peace to the world in the near future. Those who receive its initiation become perpetually linked to the realm and its purpose.
