This afternoon, Michael Spyres joins the Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg for a concert in memory of John Nelson, who passed away last March. He will perform the tenor part in Mozart’s “Requiem”, under the direction of Wilson Ng, in the evocative setting of Strasbourg’s Saint-Guillaume Church.
A close collaborator of the American conductor, Michael Spyres was often a central figure in Nelson’s most acclaimed projects. Maestro Nelson, in turn, left an indelible mark on both the Orchestra and the city’s musical life.

Today marks Juan Sancho’s last performance in the title role of Monteverdi’s "L’Orfeo" with Les Épopées, at the Théâtre du Casino in Dieppe, part of the Festival de l’Académie Bach. One of the very first operas ever written, and still among the most compelling, the work will be performed in concert under the baton of Stéphane Fuget.

Toi, toi, toi to Krzysztof Lachman, who today takes the stage as Conte di Libenskof in Rossini’s dramma giocoso “Il viaggio a Reims” at the Teatro Rossini in Pesaro, part of the Rossini Opera Festival (ROF), in Emilio Sagi’s beloved and annually staged production, conducted by Alessandro Mazzocchetti.
Just a month ago, the Polish tenor appeared in the final concert of the “Alberto Zedda” Academy, the annual ROF event that spotlights young, fast-rising singers specializing in Rossini and the bel canto repertoire.
In the upcoming season, Lachman will debut two more roles from the Swan of Pesaro: Don Ramiro in “La Cenerentola” in Dijon and Conte d’Almaviva in “Il barbiere di Siviglia” in Poznań.

Beth Taylor: Mezzo-Soprano in Mahler’s 3rd Symphony at the BBC Proms under Ryan Bancroft

“But by far the biggest cheer at the end of the evening was reserved for Scottish mezzo-soprano Beth Taylor, for whom I have only the very highest praise. Intonation beyond question, German diction perfect, volume beautifully controlled and audible in the huge hall – a most moving and unforgettable rendition. ‘O Mensch! Gib Acht! Die Welt ist tief … tief ist ihr Weh’, chilling words by Nietzsche in these difficult times. Taylor has both a sparkling top register and a lovely mellow low register, quite a rare combination. I was not surprised at all to read she made her Carnegie Hall debut a few months ago and forthcoming performances will include Mahler’s Second Symphony under Sir Simon Rattle and the Bavarians, the Los Angeles under Gustavo Dudamel, Elgar’s Sea Pictures with the Montreal under Rafael Payare and the London Philharmonic under Edward Gardner; and, last not least, both Beethoven’s Ninth and Mahler’s Eighth with the Berlin Philharmonic under Kirill Petrenko. Taylor has been discovered – what a list!”

This evening, Juan Sancho stars in the title role in a concert performance of Monteverdi’s epoch-making masterpiece “L’Orfeo” at France’s Les Heures Musicales de l’Abbaye de Lessay, under the musical direction of Stéphane Fuget leading Les Epopées.

These include DVD releases on the Dynamic label of Pier Luigi Pizzi’s productions at Teatro Real Madrid, conducted by William Christie, as well as a Naïve label recording of “L’Orfeo” with the ensemble I Gemelli.

This evening, Beth Taylor appears as the alto soloist in Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony at the Royal Albert Hall, as part of the BBC Proms. Known for her dark-hued tone and expressive depth, BethTaylor brings emotional resonance to Mahler’s profound setting of Nietzsche’s “O Mensch! Gib Acht!” and the luminous “Es sungen drei Engel”. Ryan Bancroft conducts a powerful collaboration between the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Orchestre National de Bretagne, joined by the CBSO Children’s Chorus and the upper voices of the National Chorus of Wales.
The Scottish mezzo-soprano has swiftly established herself as one of today’s foremost Mahler interpreters, having earned critical praise.

Toi, toi, toi to Kangmin Justin Kim, who this evening takes on the role of Natasha in Peter Eötvös’s “Three Sisters” at the Salzburg Festival, in a new production by Evgeny Titov. The opera is conducted by Maxime Pascal with Klangforum Wien, while Alphonse Cemin leads the offstage ensemble.
Premiered in 1998 at the Opéra National de Lyon, “Three Sisters” is widely regarded as one of the most significant operas of the late 20th century. The role of Natasha, a symbol of vulgarity, pragmatism, and social ambition, stands in stark opposition to the sisters’ fading ideals and intellectual longing, making her one of the opera’s most pivotal and unsettling figures.
Additional performances are scheduled on August 12, 21, and 24, 2025
