The father of my son abandoned me at the altar for my maid of honor — one year later, his mother appeared at my doorstep and stated, "If you don’t come with me right now, you’ll regret it tomorrow."
Luke and I had been in a relationship for seven years.
We had a son named Miles, who is now 5, and for an extended period, I thought we were a family. The wedding was meant to solidify that.
One year ago, I stood in a white gown before all our acquaintances, clutching a bouquet while Miles sat in the front row, kicking his tiny shoes against the chair.
Luke appeared resolute as he approached the altar.
The officiant directed the question to him first, inquiring if he accepted me as his wife.
"I can't do this," Luke stated.
A wave of nervous laughter spread through the church.
Then he spoke more forcefully:
"I'm sorry, I can't marry you. I'm in love with Vanessa."
The church fell into silence.
I was rendered speechless.
Then my maid of honor and dearest friend, Vanessa, stepped forward in her soft pink dress, placed her hand on my arm, and gave me the most comforting little smile.
"Don't make this harder than it needs to be, Laurel," she murmured. "Love just chooses who it chooses."
That was my revelation.
In front of my son. My family. His family. Everyone.
From that moment, I existed in fragments.
I returned the presents. Canceled the honeymoon. Took Miles to kindergarten with puffy eyes and pretended I had allergies when other parents stared for too long.
Luke sent child support payments and courteous messages, but I never replied to anything that wasn’t about Miles.
His mother, Patricia, also did not reach out.
She had never been fond of me. Too quiet, too average, not refined enough for her only son.
So when she showed up on my porch one rainy evening a year later, dressed in her church attire and clutching her purse as if afraid to let it slip, I nearly closed the door.
But her expression halted me.
She looked terrified.
"Laurel," she gasped. "If you don’t come with me right now, you’ll regret it tomorrow." ⬇️
