We pulled in and stayed 3 nights at Red Earth Estate. A beautiful little Vineyard with a Dumpling House, next to the Dubbo Observatory and behind Taronga Western Plains Zoo.
Now this Zoo is hands down (up until this point at least) is the BEST Zoo we have ever visited. Definitely worth checking out if you’re on this side of Aus.
You can bring along your own bikes or hire: bikes, golf carts, paddle boats or drive through your car through which we thought was pretty cool AND your pass also gives you access over two days.
The park is around a 5km ride, very scenic and the enclosures were great. The only animal we didn’t actually see what the Platypus (sadly).
Part way round, there is the Waterhole. This is a little half time break to have a cuppa (maybe get a bite) and the kids can have a run around in the water fountains to cool off. To finish off your lap there is a playground to burn whatever is left of the kids energy. It was really well thought out.
Now, if you read my previous post on Cobar and the kamikaze Maggie’s, then here below is the sequel, read on.
Day 1- As we get to the first enclosure of the zoo, we were warned by some other attendees- “Swooping Maggie’s” watch for the signs, they have them up around the park.
We had a few laughs. Remembering the few days before when there was an attempt on my life by these birds.
Max thought it’d be funny to prank Piper (who was clearly traumatised by it all and anxious by the mention of them) and call out “MAGGIE” to see her freak out a few times. Then we safely reached the end of our lap *sigh of relief*.
The following day, we thought. Well, we have a two day pass- be rude not to use it.
Let’s pack the bikes up again and go for a quick burn around the zoo again.
This trip, we were a little more relaxed. We rode on through the zoo without a care in the world. We sat and had lunch by the Elephants, watched on as they roamed around, then continued on.
We were enjoying the sights as we were riding along, I let my guard down, letting myself fall into a false sense of security (with my helmet on today) When, out of nowhere, no warning and with no sightings. BANG!
Startled. l look out the corner of my eye to see black and white feathers. I got struck.
A little bit of blood, ear stung.
(I swear this bu**er has followed me from Cobar to get one up one me 😂)
As arrived at the Waterhole we get off our bikes to have a break, laughing about how I’m a walking bird magnet at the moment to have another zoo goer come over to me to asking if I’d been hit too?
Apparently I wasn’t the only casualty, he’d been hit moments before but he was worse off than I. So we stop and exchange magpie attack stories and showing our war wounds.
So, the Maggies and I are now 1 for 1~ let’s hope it stays that way.
