Happy New Year from Us to You 🥳

We’ve been a little quiet making decisions on where and when to go next!

Last year had a few health complications for some of those closest to us, so we are staying put for the moment in 📍 Adelaide, SA.

We are moving our girl today to our families property. Ahhh, The feels 😍 cannot wait to go again, it’s definitely given us the itch and summer travel fomo. We have missed our adventures, there is still so much to see & do!

4 years ago, we settled on the sale of our first home together. After 10+ years and so many memories in this home. Our first home, our engagement, getting married, brining Piper & Max home from hospital.

It’s been an adventure ever since, two more homes brought and sold and now we have the bus… what’s next?…

I think the pink hair needs to make a comeback 😉

We pulled in and stayed 3 nights at Red Earth Estate. A beautiful little Vineyard with a Dumpling House, next to the Dubbo Observatory and behind Taronga Western Plains Zoo.

Now this Zoo is hands down (up until this point at least) is the BEST Zoo we have ever visited. Definitely worth checking out if you’re on this side of Aus.

You can bring along your own bikes or hire: bikes, golf carts, paddle boats or drive through your car through which we thought was pretty cool AND your pass also gives you access over two days.

The park is around a 5km ride, very scenic and the enclosures were great. The only animal we didn’t actually see what the Platypus (sadly).

Part way round, there is the Waterhole. This is a little half time break to have a cuppa (maybe get a bite) and the kids can have a run around in the water fountains to cool off. To finish off your lap there is a playground to burn whatever is left of the kids energy. It was really well thought out.

Now, if you read my previous post on Cobar and the kamikaze Maggie’s, then here below is the sequel, read on.

Day 1- As we get to the first enclosure of the zoo, we were warned by some other attendees- “Swooping Maggie’s” watch for the signs, they have them up around the park.

We had a few laughs. Remembering the few days before when there was an attempt on my life by these birds.

Max thought it’d be funny to prank Piper (who was clearly traumatised by it all and anxious by the mention of them) and call out “MAGGIE” to see her freak out a few times. Then we safely reached the end of our lap *sigh of relief*.

The following day, we thought. Well, we have a two day pass- be rude not to use it.
Let’s pack the bikes up again and go for a quick burn around the zoo again.

This trip, we were a little more relaxed. We rode on through the zoo without a care in the world. We sat and had lunch by the Elephants, watched on as they roamed around, then continued on.

We were enjoying the sights as we were riding along, I let my guard down, letting myself fall into a false sense of security (with my helmet on today) When, out of nowhere, no warning and with no sightings. BANG!

Startled. l look out the corner of my eye to see black and white feathers. I got struck.

A little bit of blood, ear stung.

(I swear this bu**er has followed me from Cobar to get one up one me 😂)

As arrived at the Waterhole we get off our bikes to have a break, laughing about how I’m a walking bird magnet at the moment to have another zoo goer come over to me to asking if I’d been hit too?

Apparently I wasn’t the only casualty, he’d been hit moments before but he was worse off than I. So we stop and exchange magpie attack stories and showing our war wounds.

So, the Maggies and I are now 1 for 1~ let’s hope it stays that way.

What a cute little town this was, we only stayed a night here on the way to Dubbo but it left us all with a core memory. The day Mum was attacked by two Maggie’s 🙈 never in my days….

We pulled up at Glenhope Bush Camp. This camp was quirky but beautiful. Heaps of space for everyone, camping was by donation and the kids got a little bit of a history lesson on the land.

We took a stroll over to the windmill on the property to have a look. The kids learnt about the families that lived there in their time and seen there was a continued track to head down so we thought- why not get the bikes off and go for a ride to explore.

What was enjoyable turned to panic rather quickly. Admiring the property we noticed a Magpie and kids said said “oh look, a Maggie” like we always do.

This Maggie was not playing games. It turned in a split second into a kamikaze dive bombing Maggie with vengeance in its eyes!

Yes. Turns out It’s breeding season and we were the enemy (like chill bird, ain’t any of us getting up that tree).

Piper started to scream, she abandoned her bike and ran back toward Troy who was behind us all.

Max managed to safely turn around and get to safety and then there was me, ahead of the bunch and the target. Mum taking one for the team.

Trying to comprehend what was going on, who was where and keep an eye on this bird, I then noticed there were not one but TWO coming for me- it was rather chaotic!

I had to make a decision on what to do. So I turned around and jumped off my bike. This didn’t go to plan as my pedals hit my leg, I tripped over into the prickles to then pick my bike up and carry it over my head for protection. While one eyed me off from a tree branch and the other decided to rethink its next swoop mid air.

It was something we all laughed about when we got into safety and walked back to the bus picking prickles out my a**.

Valuable lesson for all- wear your helmet while riding ESPECIALLY is Maggie breeding season.

We arrived in NSW last week.

First stop was Broken Hill at the Broken Hill Outback Resort, the kids absolutely loved it here. An absolutely magical spot. All the ticks. Management were lovely and accommodating for a last minute booking. All the amenities were fantastic! Plenty of space and there is a little bistro and bar to get yourself a bite to eat then kick back on the lawn with a beverage or two underneath the outback sunsets- which are glorious! 👌🏼

If you’re ever passing through and need a place to stop for a few nights, we highly recommend the Broken Hill Outback Resort. We were bummed we couldn’t stay on longer.

Between getting the car back from its repairs and repairing the driver seat for us to travel, we decided to head to Burra for a day trip with the kids.

$60 for two adults (kids free) gets you a key tomorrow all the historic sites for a self guided tour.

The kids absolutely loved it!

We visited the BonnAccord Mine Museum where they could do a little scavenger hunt and learnt about the town and its mining history.

Then we hopped over to the train station museum where they could check out an old carriage and dress up in some of the clothes from the time. The kids also picked up some free postcards to colour and send to friends.

We visited the old lock up and Redruth Gaol. The kids were fascinated reading about what happened in the time when these were operating. They could read what punishment people receive for their crimes.

Then we drove over to the old copper mine which was sadly the end of our journey for the day, Billy had hit his limit and needed a much needed sleep 😴

Definitely a great day out with the kids and worth a look.

Well, this round has been an adventure so far.

What could go wrong? Well, a lot…

Before we managed to take off Billy had managed to flick the isolation switch and drain our batteries. Great start.

It was on from there…

With another window becoming a problem only an hour into the trip, forcing an emergency stop to fix it- first night spent behind the Pt Wakefield Service Station 😅

The bike tyre completely melted away on one of our bikes by the second stop.

Our car decided the next day would be a great day to have its turn with a suspected head gasket 😵‍💫 lucky with a second opinion, it was just a hose that still required the motor to be dismantled to get to it!

The tube for the air suspension in the driver seat decided to split the day we were leaving for Broken Hill 🙈… twice. Luckily that was a relatively easy and cheap fix.

I was attacked by two swooping magpies on our family bike ride (it was quite hilarious, although dangerous).

Tomorrow, fix a coolant leak from the bus.

Between all this chaos, we have had great times. We have had some of our days lost to these delays BUT.

We spent time with family and friends.

We seen some more of our beautiful country.

Enjoyed the outback sunrises and sunset (I’ll never get sick of them).

Been doing more bike rides and walks, laughing and spending time together, even the simplest things far outweigh the hiccups.
