Hey there!

So it's no secret that the nightlife industry in SA has been decimated by the Transition Committee’s management of COVID-19, with many working artists, promoters, owners, staff and security having spent most of 2020 and 2021 without an outlet to work, earn or connect with their communities.

The arts and music sector is hugely responsible for providing opportunities for communities to connect, and participate in freedoms which promote mental health, invigoration, and economic stimulation. Young artists are frustrated, stagnant, and despondent. We are tired. We are losing time, and our careers.

South Australians are crying out for fair and responsible management of this industry, dying, in a state that prophesies its place as ‘The Festival State’, and in a city proud of its designation as a UNESCO City of Music. All we expect is proportionate consideration to our sporting neighbours. It IS a priority of ours to provide safe events, and we CAN.

Have a read of the petition, and please sign. This is round 2, an independent initiative led by crew at Lion Arts Factory & Five Four Entertainment, and supported by a cluster of us fed up industry folk. Show your support, share it to your mates, and let’s turn the tide. I’m sure most of us would have liked nothing more than to dance on our long weekend. Head to Let Us DANCE and let’s get this state back on track!

SUGAR AID: Groundfloor Presents Lauren Hansom [DJ/Syd]

Tonight is the last Groundfloor Presents at Sugar in what has been an incredible 3 year stint at the club. A journey that has traversed from a weekly Thursday night voyage, to Friday’s, to Saturday’s and monthly shows with endless local talent, friends new + old and a lot of the deejays that inspired us in the beginning - Patrice Scott, Mike Huckaby, Delano Smith, Ata Macias, Molly, Midland, Marcellus Pittman, and tonight .. Lauren Hansom.

Supported by Maddie Larkin [Midnight Tea, Tricky Rats], DW! [Club In Theory], and Repetitive Bliss. Club owner and in-house celebrity, Driller, rightfully assumes the closing set.

*note there has been some changes due to licencing, check the event, Humanitix, or our story for confirmation.

Come through for the finalè. Presales still available, and set times are listed on our story!

*SUGAR AID: Groundfloor Presents Lauren Hansom [DJ/Syd]

*With poignant but full hearts we’re sharing the news that Vanessa Worm is unable to travel as per COVID travel restrictions from Victoria and will not be able to join the bill for Sunday’s show, which will most likely be the final night of Sugar as we know it.

Sugar Aid has been a tremendous effort, and a lot of incredible music and people have drifted through the doors this past month. We have had so many fruitful times and cherished memories in this institution over our 3/4 years as residents and years as club-goers.

This Sunday we are still incredibly lucky to be hosting one of Australia’s most versatile selectors, Lauren Hansom, over from Eora / Sydney, an Australian whom has been a prevalent fixture on the European circuit and here in Aus for years at events such as Inner Varnika and Dekmantel, radio berths at Redlight, NTS Radio and Skylab Radio. Her breadth of experience and knowledge as a true digger will fall on blessed ears on Sunday night as she showcases music from diverse pockets of the globe for one 👏 last 👏 dance 👏

Presales are available via Humanitix: tinyurl.com/laurenhansom

Other changes to the bill include Mungo’s withdrawal and the addition of two local superstars from our Groundfloor: Radiothon bill; the other half of Tricky Rats, Maddie Larkin, and DW! from Club In Theory.

As the sun sets for the final time this weekend, enter Strict Face.

He prescribes ...”60 minutes of mostly sluggish music, apart from the odd jolt to the heart. Best heard while rummaging through the wine cabinet and struggling to choose what to have with the pasta you just made.”

NELYA presents ‘Iran At Night’ next, followed by Code618, D8tawhore, Burden and Dj Who? to wrap what has been a special weekend long showcase of local artists.

Shall we do it again sometime?

Thanks, and keep it 🔒

A warm welcome to new contributors today Finlay, Van Damme, Dale, Nessy, NELYA, Code618, D8tawhore + Burden, and welcome back to mainstays Ruby + Strict Face, Dj Who?and Claude.

Nelya’s ‘Iran at Night’ explores music by Iranian artists from inside and outside her homeland, other co-collaborators and some of their close Middle Eastern neighbours.

Aiyana (D8TAWHORE) is a kaurna based Afro-Latina DJ with tight taste in tracks. Their blend of contemporary techno and 90s UK Garage compliments their ways of respecting namely the West Indies & African Diaspora in the UK; who created a key part of rave culture and the Afro-futurist movement. Nessy also deeply explores this UK realm today.

We’re underway at 11AM ACST with Finlay, long time visitor at the old Groundfloor Records shop! Big ups!

Van Damme represents Spin Lizzy, a local crew with an honest and infectious zest for great music emerging with parties around Adelaide.

Code618 + Burden represent the old and new school of vinyl deejays, with Code618 a prominent figure around Adelaide between the years of 92-98, while Burden has delved more recently into the underground rave scene from which he is greatly inspired, hosting parties like ‘Optimism’.

We extend this mention to Dale, a long time listener / event attender, but first time mix submitter. A DJ from home - all vinyl too, recorded with 2x Pioneer PLX-1000's and a xone 92, and tight, inspired by a party at Hoppetosse in Berlin when he was there in September 2019. Vinyl-only releases from labels including Slow Life, JISUL, 2X, Blank State, Pleasure Zone, including a release from Ewan Jansen on Butter Sessions.

DJ Who ? provides the perfect send off with ‘it’s past my bed time’ - combining ambient tracks with minimal techno, acid and dub infusions.

The metaphorical flag of our city is flying high. Still to come today; a more ambient reset into the evening with DW! [Club In Theory], followed by DJ Stress Ball, Push0ver, and XGG.

Four duos in the mix today with ETHMIX, Tricky Rats (as mentioned yesterday), Pepsi & Dear Maria, and the experimental XGG. XGG’s performance is a live cassette recording rather than a desk mix - super interesting concept - low fidelity, bootleg quality. It feels like the essence of being in the room with a couple of bedroom DJs having the time of their lives amongst their dusty KRKs, or like the sensation of hearing the house party happening in the lounge, but as the housemate in their room who needs to get up for work in the morning. The last 15 mins or so is a separate mix of unreleased experimental music with components of techno, rave and jungle, erring on the side of a dystopian future. A mind-bending end to a huge day of inspiring radio.

ETHMIX are folk and electronica based auditory adventurers of the world. Wielding the powers of ethnoscience and H+ these mixes bare no limits.

Journeys in ambient and IDM for Sinking Spaces and DW! [Club In Theory] - meditative, and introspective. Pushover and DJ Stress Ball head in similar immersive directions whilst sitting more within the realm of rave. Pillars of the Adelaide community Featherstone [Live/Ernest's Way] and Trebek [Nightime Drama] feature also, while we offer a warm welcome to Laebaqq who does exactly that - this guy has a knack for radio and has brunch covered. Maliboo curates a nice selection of music from the women that inspire him in the industry.

Young guns Pepsi & Di Maria host a party at Lotus Lounge soon called Bound 2.
