SA mare The Map on the road and Geelong Cup bound

SOUTH Australian mare The Map will try and enhance any chance of sneaking a place in the race that stops a nation in Wednesday’s $500,000 Geelong Cup (2400m).

Dan Clarken and Oopy MacGillivray have rolled the dice with the impressive last-start Morphettville winner and make the trip to Victoria for the Group 3 feature with Ben Price booked to ride.

The Map is one of a host of horses trying to secure a weight penalty that could help secure a Melbourne Cup start.

She’s giving away 17 ratings points and will carry the same weight as current favourite First Immortal from the Mark and Levi Kavanagh stable in a race that features the likes of Spanish Mission who finished third in both the 2021 Melbourne Cup behind Verry Elleegant and 2022 Australian Cup won by Duias.

Clarken said they were looking forward to seeing just where The Map sits against the better stayers.

“Last start she won like she was ready to take that next step and the other factor is there isn’t a lot else for her in Adelaide this time of year,’’ Clarken said.

“She certainly hasn’t gone backwards, if anything that win the other day has bought her on again.

“That was what we’d kind of been waiting for from her. She was disappointing the previous start at Murray Bridge but we quickly realised that she just doesn’t like being ridden close and on the fence, she probably prefers to be out in clear air and given time to wind up,’’ he said.

The Geelong Cup is a proven form race when it comes to past Melbourne Cup success.

Media Puzzle, Americain and Dunaden all came through the feature to claim success while last year’s winner Emissary finished second in the Cup behind Gold Trip.

The stable are also hoping stablemate Thirsty Guest can continue trending in a similar direction.

The four-year-old was equally impressive winning at Morphettville on the same day as The Map and Clarken said Friday’s $107,250 Gawler Cup (1500m) looked a nice stepping stone for the untapped galloper.

“It looks the right progressive race for him,’’ Clarken said.

“He’s a nice horse, and like The Map, he hasn’t gone backwards since his win the other day,’’ he said.

Weekend wrap: Hot start for Toeroek continues, Jolly treble, Crowther double
Leading jockey Jake Toeroek continued his sizzling start to the 2022-23 racing season with a riding treble at Morphettville on Saturday.
Toeroek and the Richard and Chantelle Jolly stable claimed an early race to race double with Deepfloat Diva and Pudding before the lethal combination added a third victory to another big day at the office when Aviatress proved superior later in the day.

Toeroek is currently enjoying his most successful calendar year of riding, Saturday successes taking his record to 68 winners for 2023.

The Price Bloodstock pair of Deepfloat Diva, who would have been Hong Kong bound if he didn’t fail a vet test, and Aviatress maintaining their unbeaten records, Toeroek confident both horses will find their way into better races.

“He’s a very smart horse,’’ Toeroek said of Deepfloat Diva.

“I’d say he’ll probably go for a break now but when he comes back in, we’re looking at a pretty nice one,’’ he said.

Likewise, the leading jockey said there is also plenty of upside with Aviatress who had no problems jumping from a midweek maiden to city success.

“She’s a smart horse, I think she’s black type,’’ Toeroek added.

“I’m just glad we get to keep these ones,’’ he said of the pair.

Kayla Crowther had a riding double winning with Sir Kingsford before the talented Sghirippa scored an impressive win in the final race of the big 10-race card.

“He switched off really well and when I popped him out, he had a really good turn of foot,’’ Crowther said.

“I reckon he had so much more up his sleeve,’’ she said.

Jason Holder also had a riding double with Lights Of Broadway and Victorian Anilla, while the Will Clarken and Niki O’Shea stable had a training double with Silent Surrente regaining winning form before Superior Sam scored impressively.

DOM Tourneur and Justin Potter shared riding honours at Naracoorte on Sunday.

Tourneur combined for a double with the Aaron Bain and Ned Taylor pair of Navy Gold and Midnight Mass while Potter claimed the bookends winning the opening race with Namadji and the last with Archway To Heaven for Scott Whittle.

Oxlade keeping options open with Sghirripa
Strathalbyn horseman Shane Oxlade is keeping his options open with talented galloper Sghirripa who resumes at Morphettville on Saturday.

Oxlade said the four-year-old who has been out of the money just twice in his nine starts could find himself heading back to Victoria due to his tricky rating with a lot of local races geared to towards TAB Finals Day at Morphettville next month.

“We’ll get through Saturday and maybe head over the border,’’ Oxlade said.

Sghirripa hasn’t raced since running fifth behind Validated in the $102,250 Racing Rewards SA Plate at Murray Bridge back in June, his previous effort a brave fourth behind Legio Ten down the Flemington straight.

“He was super the first time down the straight,’’ Oxlade said.

“I probably would have liked to have taken a sit that day but the way the track was racing everyone wanted to be in the middle and we drew the inside and didn’t really have a choice.

“Those who went with him weren’t there at the end,’’ he said.

Sghirippa looked good winning a recent Murray Bridge trial ridden behind the speed before cruising past rivals with Kayla Crowther in the saddle.

“I’ve never been against him leading, it was how he was leading,’’ Oxlade said.

“I didn’t want him driven to be there.

“Kayla said he got a bit keen (in his trial) but he got to the outside and did what he needed to do without much effort,’’ he said.

Sghirripa clashes with another talented galloper first-up from a spell – the Peter Hardacre-trained Press Down.

Placed in the Listed Redelva Stakes at Morphettville in April, Press Down was solid in two subsequent Melbourne runs beaten 1.6 lengths behind Cause For Concern at Flemington before running fourth behind Kin at Caulfield prior to a break.

CHIPSON
Race 5, No. 7
A lot to like about his return when he worked through the line nicely behind Portation at Murray Bridge. Horse with upside and should take some beating here.

HEAVY ROTATION
Race 6, No. 14
Has been racing in good form over the border and was perfectly ridden when he powered over the top of Salisbury Hill to win at Mount Gambier last time. Drawn out but he can give this a shake again.
