Until now, South Australia has lacked a unifying brand to tell its wine story.

Today, the South Australian Wine Industry Association (SAWIA) launched Wine South Australia, a new brand and digital home designed to fill that gap and showcase the state’s wine to the world.

A Cancer Council SA campaign launched this month in South Australia with an emphatic message plastered on trams and played in podcast ad breaks: alcohol causes cancer. Illustrating this campaign is a glass of red wine. 🍷

CEO of Australian Grape & Wine, Lee McLean, said the campaign was concerning.

“Public health messaging should be rooted in nuance and context,” he said. “Portraying red wine as something that spreads cancer throughout the body — particularly in the context of moderate consumption — can cause unnecessary fear and confusion. It does not reflect the nuanced advice provided in Australia’s national drinking guidelines. We believe Australians are best served by health information that empowers informed, responsible choices — not by alarmist portrayals that may inadvertently undermine trust in public messaging.”

Riverina Winegrape Growers CEO Jeremy Cass has penned an open letter to the NSW State and Federal Governments, calling for urgent assistance to save wine production in the region, voicing concern that the region could be facing the end of its days as a wine producer.

In part one of the open letter, published to the Riverina Winegrape Growers’ page last Friday, Cass detailed his growers’ distress at the prospect of entering yet another vintage with no positive change.

“We are fielding questions from the government on modern slavery, but our growers aren’t making enough to survive, let alone have employees,” said Cass.
