EAGLES FLY HIGH

By Robert Laidlaw
For the third time in four seasons West Torrens is the 2026 Premier League Softball flag-winners, after beating Hills 7-0 in the grand final at West Beach Parks on Saturday.
A shut-out performance from the circle by Steph Trzcinski, an inside the park home run by Madi Scott, and Amber Hood’s perfect night with the bat were the highlights.
Through the first two innings the game was scoreless, then in the bottom of the third the Eagles exploded for four runs.
Hood and Jordan Harris collected singles, with an overthrow scoring the first run, followed by Scott and Trzcinski doubles, a Sophie Hoyle sac fly and a Carly Allen hit up the middle for the fourth run.
Then in the bottom of the fourth Sienna Sutton walked, Hood singled, and with two out, Scott slammed the ball to rightfield and circled the bases, avoiding the tag at home plate in a close play to complete an inside the park homer, and make it 7-0.
Hills looked like extended the game past the top of the fifth when the first two batters reached base – Georgia King on a single and Megan Jemson on an error.
But West Torrens’ pitcher Trzcinski struck out two of the next three batters to end the game and give West Torrens the premiership.
Trzcinski conceded three hits for seven strikeouts in five innings to win the MVP award for the grand final. Scott collected two hits and batted four runs in, while Hood picked up two hits and a walk from three trips to the plate.

HILLS JUMP BACK INTO SECOND

By Robert Laidlaw
FOUR TIMES THREE EQUALS a victory, as Hills scored three runs in four separate innings to beat Seacombe 12-3 in Wednesday’s Premier League Softball at West Beach Parks and jumped into second spot on the ladder.
The Tigers also had a three-run frame, in the bottom of the fourth, when Regan Dias walked, Abbie Mossman singled and Neely Peterson put one out.
But Seacombe was already 9-0 down before its rally, as the Heat scored a trifecta of runs in the first, second and fourth digs, while also adding another three runs at the top of the fifth and final inning.
At the top of the opening frame, Abbie Bastian singled, Karizma Bergesen and Georgia King hit RBI doubles, and an error made it 3-0 to Hills.
Then in the second dig, Zoe Marrich singled, Bergesen hit a two-run two-bagger, and King had another RBI double.
In the fourth, hits to Bergesen, Sarah Harvey, Mia Oats-Willis and Lara Tamke made it 9-0, while three errors, two walks and Megan Jemson’s two-run single in the fifth capped the game’s scoring.
Mikayla Jankovic went the distance from the circle, conceding two hits and one walk for eight strikeouts in five innings to claim the win.
Now the Heat has control of its destiny, with a win over Sturt in Saturday’s final minor round games ensuring Hills finish second and grab the double chance. A loss combined with a Walkerville win over Port Adelaide will give the Cats second spot.
IN A TOUGH GAME, punctuated by errors, West Torrens held on for a 6-4 victory over Sturt.
The Eagles scored twice at the top of the opening inning, after Jordan Harris walked, Steph Trzcinski singled and a pair of errors.
That lead was extended to 3-0 at the top of the third frame, after hits to Amber Hood Harris and Trzcinski.
But the Falcons threw a spanner in the works with a three-run rally in the bottom of the third, after Jacqui Davies-Morgante and Sarah Tonkin hit singles, Sophie Walton hit a sac fly, Maddie Cameron had a RBI hit and Jordyn Lee had a RBI ground-out, to tie the scores at 3-3.
West Torrens re-took the lead at the top of the fourth dig, after Caitlin Holt singled, Harris hit a sac fly and a pair of errors, to go 6-3 up.
The final run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Cameron singled and came home on an error, with neither side scoring in the sixth and final frame.

TWO OUT OF THREE AIN’T TOO BAD

By Robert Laidlaw
TWO OUT OF THREE SEMI-FINAL SERIES went to three games, with Henley & Grange and Adelaide winning a deciding third clash against Port Adelaide and West Torrens, while Southern Districts beat East Torrens in straight sets.
With the top three teams all winning game one at home on Saturday, it was expected to be a routine clean sweep on Sunday in game two but it wasn’t to be.
PORT ADELAIDE SHOCKED HENLEY & GRANGE at West Lakes with a 4-2 victory in Sunday’s first game, while the Rams rebounded to take the decider 14-4.
Sunday’s opener was tight, with the score locked at 1-1 after seven innings, the Magpies scoring a run at the top of the second dig, when Brodie Arriola walked, stole second base and came home on Tommy Bird’s single. Henley responded in the bottom of the fourth after hits to Cam Tilly and Jordan Hodges to make it 1-1.
With the scores still tied at 1-1 going into the top of the eighth, Ryan Schrapel singled, went to second base on Matt Christensen’s bunt, and scored on a wild throw – 2-1 Port.
Then at the top of the ninth, an error and Campbell Hodgetts infield single set up RBI hits for Christensen and Nick Vasic, to make it 4-1.
But Henley refused to lay down and charged out of the blocks to start the bottom of the ninth with doubles from Jet Clohessy and Phil Acosta for one run, but the next three hitters were retired with no further damage, giving the Maggies a 4-2 win.
Sammy Steigert pitched eight innings for the win, conceding 10 hits for two strikeouts, while Jordy Grose took the loss, after 7.1 frames for four hits and seven K2s.
Game two was over virtually before it started, as Henley scored four runs in the first dig and five in the second to lead 9-0, and coasted the rest of the way.
Wilson Lee hit a two-run double in that first rally, while in the second dig, consecutive one-out hits to Jack Partington, Jose Paula, Lee, Tilly and topped by Liam Bull’s three-run dinger, made it 9-0.
Another pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth made it 11-0, on RBI hits to Bull and Hodges, while the Magpies finally managed to breakthrough with Dayton Mitchell’s two-run homer in fifth, and at the top of the seventh, Campbell Hodgetts hit a two-run single to bring Port to 11-4.
But the Rams finished the deal with three tallies in the bottom of the seventh to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule, on Paula’s two run single and Tilly’s sac fly.
Lee pitched 5.2 innings for the win, conceding seven hits for six strikeouts.
THERE WERE TWO SHUT-OUTS at Plympton on Sunday, with West Torrens winning the first game 3-0 and Adelaide sealing the series victory with a 7-0 win in the decider.
Game one on Sunday was a 0-0 ballgame through four innings, with the Eagles scoring twice at the top of the fifth frame, on James McFarlane’s two-run hit, after Nico Vanderlinden and Nick George collected singles.
Then at the top of the fifth West Torrens scored the final run of the game, after the brother combination of Vanderlindens collected hits – Nathan scoring the run, Nico batting him in.
Jarod Large threw five frames for the win, conceding four hits for six strikeouts, while reliever Masa Sawada finished the job, allowing just one hit for three K2s in four digs.
Angels starter Nick Veselinovic pitched five innings for six hits and nine strikeouts in taking the loss. Adelaide centrefielder Max Tracey took five catches, and would hold another four chances in the second game for nine on the day.
The decider started slowly with neither team scoring in the first two frames, but then Adelaide got untracked with three runs in the bottom of the third dig, on Stef Welch’s long home run, after Ben Ganley singled and Ty Forney was hit by a pitch.
Another run came home in the bottom of the fifth, after two-out hits to Tracey (double) and Forney, and the final three runs of the game came in the bottom of the seventh, on RBI hits to Tracey and Ian Heck, and Welch’s sac fly.
Ian Heck threw a ‘heck’ of a game, conceding three hits for eight strikeouts over 7.2 innings.
ALTHOUGH SOUTHERN DISTRICTS WRAPPED UP the series in straight sets against East Torrens at Christie Beach, it wasn’t as easy as the 6-2 scoreline would indicate in Sunday’s clash.
Going into the bottom of the fifth inning the game was still scoreless, with a two-out, two-run single by Riley Moore breaking the duck. Two hit batters set the spree up, as the brothers Hutchings wore one each for the team, with Nick and Matt not looking any worse for wear.
In the bottom of the seventh Matt Hutchings led off the frame for the Hawks and smashed the first pitch he faced over the fence to make it a 3-0 ballgame.
Then in the bottom of the eighth, hits by Jake Campbell, Byron Turner, Andrew Rodgers and Brett Hattersley set up a three-run rally, as South looked almost home at 6-0.
But the Redsox still had some petrol in the tank, especially after Carter Powell and Charlie Ashcroft were hit by pitches, followed by Harry Delitannis’ RBI groundout, Braeden Ashworth’s single and an error, but only two runs were scored.
John Inglis pitched a two-hitter over five innings for six strikeouts to claim the win, while reliever Jacob Morin tossed four frames for two hits and three K2s.
For East Torrens, starter Connor Yeatman threw 5.1 digs for three hits and four strikeouts.
Matt Hutchings also took five catches in centrefield for South.

STEPH ALMOST PERFECT AGAIN

By Robert Laidlaw
IN A SEASON OF HIGHLIGHTS for Steph Trzcinski, she almost pitched another perfect game, in leading West Torrens to a 1-0 win over Hills in Premier League Softball at West Beach Parks on Wednesday night.
Trzcinski gave up a one-out walk to Zoe Marrich at the top of the first inning, then retired the next 17 Heat hitters without the ball leaving the infield, with 10 strikeouts over six frames.
And the victory was a handy one for the Eagles, after just one win from their previous six games. A loss would have seen West Torrens drop from top spot for the first time since early in the season.
The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the third frame, when Tahlia Sutton doubled and came home when Amber Hood’s two-out fly ball to the outfield was dropped.
For Hills, Sarah Harvey was also at the top of her game from the circle, conceding three hits for seven K2s in six innings.
ONE BIG INNING BLEW out the contest between Seacombe and Port Adelaide, with the Tigers triumphant 11-1.
It was a 2-1 ballgame leading into the bottom of the third frame, which is when Seacombe piled on nine runs, after four free passes and hits to Neely Peterson, Regan Dias (three-run triple), Ashlee Thomas, Becky Havis and Brianne Lint.
At the top of the opening inning, the Magpies scored their only run, after three walks and an error.
In the bottom of the first dig the Tigers drew level, after hits to Dias, Havis and Peterson. Then in the second frame, Sacha Mutze walked, Paige Moses bunted her to second base and an error scored the go-ahead run, for Seacombe to lead 2-1.
And it was a night of no-hitters, as Dias did the job for the Tigers from the circle, pitching four no-hit innings for six strikeouts.

EVEN STEVENS SOFTBALL ROUND

By Robert Laidlaw
WITH SATURDAY’S GAMES WASHED OUT, the Premier League Softball round was played Tuesday night at West Beach parks and resulted in all three games finishing in draws, with nothing between any of the competing teams.
IN A GAME DOMINATED by pitching, neither Walkerville or Seacombe could score a run over seven innings.
The best chance for either side to score was in the Tigers’ fourth frame, where they collected their only two hits of the game, by Abbie Mossman and Becky Havis but could not convert.
From the circle the Cats’ Lizzy Avery struck out 15 batters for those two hits in seven digs, while for Seacombe, Aroha Munroe and Regan Dias combined to shut Walkerville out.
ANOTHER CLIFF-HANGER SAW Hills and Port Adelaide share the points with a 2-2 draw.
The Heat scored both their runs at the top of the third frame, when Zoe Marrich and Georgia King hit singles, Sarah Harvey walked to load the bases, Mikayla Jankovic hit for one run and Lara Tamke picked a walk for the second score.
Port pulled one run back in the bottom of the third dig, when Chloe Davis singled, advanced on an error and came home on Lacie Ham’s grounder.
Then in the bottom of the fifth and final inning, after walks to Jess Neves, Montana Edwards and Jess Maslin set up a run, which came home on an error, to make it 2-2.
While Hills out-hit the Magpies six to three, two of Port’s hits were extra bases but the batters were stranded. Maslin hit a lead-off triple in second frame, while Brodie Borovnik connected for a one-out double in the fourth.
Amber Dodd-Mobius pitched five innings for the Magpies, conceding six hits for a pair of K2s, while for Hills, Mikayla Jankovic gave up three hits for five K2s in four frames, and Sarah Harvey collected three K2s and three walks in the final dig.
IT WAS A CASE OF scoring early and hanging on in the Sturt versus West Torrens clash, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
The Falcons got both their runs at the top of the opening inning, when Sarah Tonkin tripled, Bel White hit a RBI double and an error.
Then in the bottom of the second frame, the Eagles scored twice, after Steph Trzcinski singled and Charlotte Whinnett hit a home run.
West Torrens threatened to steal the points in the bottom of the sixth and final inning, when Alicia Martschink and Sienna Sutton collected one-out hits but the Eagles failed to break through for the winning run.
Trzcinski pitched the complete game for West Torrens, conceding five hits for 11 strikeouts in six frames, while Jessica Stewart and Olivia Durham shared duties from the circle for the Falcons.

By Robert Laidlaw
IN CONJUNCTION WITH the Junior State Softball Championships, being held at Anembo Park, Mount Barker, Premier League Softball games were played on Friday and Saturday night, which saw the top two teams go down to the third and fourth sides.
AN ALMOST PERFECT NIGHT from the circle by Taylor Caudill steered Walkerville to an 8-0 victory over the West Torrens on Friday evening.
Caudill gave an exceptional performance to thrill the crowds from the circle, facing 16 batters in five innings, conceding one hit – to Jordan Harris in the first frame – for eight strikeouts, to lead the Cats from the front.
Walkerville managed a pair of runs in the bottom of the opening dig, after Chelsea Robinson singled, Lizzy Avery smashed a RBI triple, and Sophie King hit up the middle for the second run.
Then the explosive third inning, which saw five runs cross the plate. Kellie Bested walked, Robinson singled, Erin Stone bunted, Avery walked, King hit a RBI grounder, Georgia Mason singled in a run, Daweana Sainsbury hit a sac fly and another wild throw scored the fifth run.
In the Cats’ final at bat in the bottom of the fourth frame, Robinson reached on a wild throw, stole third base and came home on Stone’s ground-out, to make it 8-0.
A PAIR OF BRIANNE LINT TRIPLES helped Seacombe hang on for an exciting 4-3 victory over Hills.
While the result cost the Heat top spot, it gave Seacombe some breathing room in the chase for a finals berth.
The Tigers scored the first run of the game at the top of the second inning, when Lint tripled and came home on Hannah Cameron’s hit up the middle.
That 1-0 lead held up until it was doubled at the top of the fourth, after an error, Lint’s single and Aroha Munroe drove a run in with a ground-out, to make it 2-0.
At the top of the fifth and final frame, Regan Dias and Neely Peterson picked walks, and both scored on Lint’s second three-bagger of the game, to make it 4-0.

SPLIT FAVOURS HENLEY

By Robert Laidlaw
HENLEY & GRANGE HAVE THE division one baseball minor premiership in its control, after splitting a double header with Adelaide at Plympton, winning game one 12-4 before going down 5-3 in the late clash.
To finish top all the Rams must do is win their final minor round game against Kensington at home next Saturday.
As for the Angels, they may be destined to finish third, unless Southern Districts loses to Gawler Rangers at Karbeethan next week, as the Hawks have a head-to-head advantage with Adelaide, with both teams on 46 points – two behind Henley.
With a head-to-head advantage over the Rams, South will be hoping Henley lose next week and it wins, to grab the minor title in miraculous circumstances.
In Saturday’s first clash against the Angels, Henley got on top early, with two runs in the first inning, after hits to Jack Partington, Wilson Lee and Cam Tilly, and a wild throw, and another three tallies in the second dig, after a pair of walks and hits to Phil Acosta and Jose Paula, for a 5-0 start.
Adelaide pulled one run back in the bottom of the third, when Max Tracey singled, stole second base and came home on Stefan Welch’s hit.
That 5-1 scoreline held up until the Rams exploded for seven runs at the top of the seventh inning, after four free passes and hits to Jet Clohessy, Shintaro Kitamura, Paula and Tilly.
In their final at bat, the Angels added some respectability to the scoreline with three tallies, after Lachlan Pace singled, Ty Forney walked, Welch had a RBI hit and Ian Heck plated two with a single, to make it 12-4.
Rolando Heredia-Bustos pitched six innings for the win, conceding three hits for three strikeouts, while Partington took six catches in centrefield for Henley.
Game two seemed to be going the Rams’ way, as it led 3-1 going into the bottom of the sixth frame.
But Adelaide busted out the bats to score four times in the bottom of the sixth to set up the split – Ty Forney singled, Tracey doubled, Welch hit a three-run dinger, and hits to Ian Heck, Rahman Martinez and Taj Williams added an insurance run.
Earlier the Angels scored a run in the bottom of the opening dig, when Tracy singled and came home on Welch’s double.
But then Henley took control with single runs in the second (Tilly homer), fourth (hits to Paula, Lee and Tilly), and sixth (Lee dinger) innings, for a 3-1 lead, before Adelaide turned the result on its head in the bottom of the sixth.
Riley Yeatman pitched three frames for the win, conceding two hits for five strikeouts, while Jordy took the loss, after giving up just three hits in the first five digs for three K2s, before the fateful rally cost him another six hits on his record.
After taking six catches in the earlier game, Partington took another four, for 10 on the day in centrefield. [photos from this game by Paul Taeuber].
PORT ADELAIDE HAS SNEAKED INTO the coveted sixth spot after twin wins against Kensington, 10-0 and 8-4 at Semaphore, and can ensure a coveted finals spot with a victory next week against Goodwood at Mortlock Park.
Two four-run rallies was the major difference in the Magpies’ 10-0 game one victory, with two further runs in the bottom of the fifth forcing the game to end early.
At the top of the opening inning, two-run homers by Dayton Mitchell and Tommy Bird gave Port the perfect start.
Then in the bottom of the third frame, the Magpies made it 8-0 with another four runs, after three walks and hits to Campbell Hodgetts, Wil Paech and Sammy Steigert. RBI hits to Steigert and Mitchell in the bottom of the fifth dig finished the contest.
Pitcher Joe Cedano claimed the win, conceding one hit in five frames for eight strikeouts.
The late game was a lot harder for Port but a four-run bottom of the fifth inning busted open a 4-4 ballgame,
At the top of the first frame, Jack Platten and Sean Maple hit singles to set the table for Michael Bishop’s three-run dinger, as the Cardinals took a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the opening dig, the Magpies responded with a pair of runs, assisted by four walks and a hit batsman, to make it 3-2.
Both teams scored a run in the second inning, Kensington on Bishop’s sac fly and Port via a Wil Paech walk and Sammy Steigert’s RBI double.
Then in the bottom of the fourth the Magpies tied the scores at 4-4, after hits to Byron Wiley and Nick Vasic, and a wild throw.
Another four walks set up Port’s four-run fifth, with Wiley and Vasic also contributing based hits.
Steigert went the distance from the mound for the win, conceding nine hits for six strikeouts.
SOUTHERN DISTRICTS MAY HAVE cost Woodville a spot in the finals with two wins at Christie Beach, especially after a come-back 4-3 game one victory, with a 7-0 second clash finishing the job.
It looked like the Senators were headed for a game one win, as it lead 3-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.
At the top of the second frame, Cesar Perez walked, Jose Pimentel singled, Oliver Hayes bunted, with a wild pitch scoring one run, and another coming home on Alfredo Rodriguez’s hit, to make it 2-0 Woodville.
When Perez put one out at the top of the fourth dig, Woodville looked in control, but when its ace pitcher AJ Verastegui left the game with one out in the bottom of the fourth, trouble was brewing.
The Hawks finally got untracked in the bottom of the fifth frame with three runs to tie the ballgame, on Nick Hutchings’ RBI double and Brett Hattersley’s two-run, two-bagger.
That 3-3 scoreline was still in place when South came to bat in the bottom of the seventh and final inning. Andrew Rodgers doubled and then scored on an errant throw, to give the Hawks a walk-off win.
Gary Grosjean went the distance for South from the mound, giving up six hits for five strikeouts on seven digs.
A four-run third inning set up the Hawks shutout win in the second contest, after two free passes and hits to Rodgers, Nick Hutchings and Riley Moore (two RBIs).
Then in the bottom of the fourth dig, a pair of hit batsmen, a walk and an infield single to Lucas Doyle saw another two runs, while in the sixth, consecutive hits to Ashton Hutchings, Hattersley and Moore made it 7-0.
Jacob Moran was on fire from the mound, conceding two hits for 13 strikeouts in seven frames.
A NO-HITTER AND TWO MULTI-HOMER games were the major highlights of West Torrens demolition of Sturt at Lockleys, with 10-0 and 6-1 twin-killings.
There were two standout performers for the Eagles in game one, pitcher Arlo Marynczak and big basher Tom McGarry.
Marynczak pitched the complete game, collecting nine strikeouts in five innings for no hits.
And McGarry visited the batters’ box three times, and three times deposited the ball well over the centrefield fence!
In the bottom of the opening frame, Sam McGarry set the stage for his brother Tom’s first blast, a two-run dinger when hit by a pitch. For an encore, Tom hit a solo shot in the bottom of the third, as West Torrens still ‘only’ led 3-0.
Then Tom’s team-mates decided to lend a helping hand in the bottom of the fourth dig, as the Eagles piled on seven runs.
Jacob Scott and Nick George hit singles to set up Austin Gallagher’s three run homer. Then Sam McGarry singled, with his sibling making it three-for-three – three blasts in one game sent into orbit!
But still there was more, as hits to the brothers Vanderlinden, Nath and Nico, gave Jasper Clark his opportunity to collected two RBIs with his hit, to make it 10-0.
Game two was a little gentler but still decisive, with Mason Clavell taking on the role of the ‘Bambino’ with two long flies.
Clavell started the ball rolling with a solo shot in the bottom of the third inning, then the following dig, after Oscar Weber singled and scored on George’s double, Clavell smashed his second round-tripper to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
The Saints finally managed a run for the day at the top of the sixth, when ‘Master-Blaster’ Jordan McArdle sent a long ball sailing over the rightfield fence.
West Torrens had the final say though, with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, on RBIs by the McGarry brothers, Sam on a hit and Tom with a sac fly.
Masa Sawada got the win for his two innings on the mound, collecting three strikeouts for no hits. Jarod Large started for the Eagles and threw three frames for one hit and five K2s.
THERE WAS NO DECISION at Karbeethan Reserve between Gawler Rangers and Golden Grove Central Districts, with two draws, 4-4 and 7-7.
Game one looked all over but the shouting when the Dodgers led 4-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, and Fynn Chester dominating from the mound.
Brayden Caskey hit a three-run home run at the top of the third frame, after hits to Tom Walsh and Daisuke McKibbin, while Matt Phillips extended the lead to 4-0 an inning later with his dinger.
Gawler finally broke the bats out in the bottom of the fourth to score twice, after hits to Raph Pelletier, Dylan Child and Sam Bawden, and a wild throw.
Then in bottom of the fifth, Ben Lambert walked, Aiden Prokopec singled, and with an error, two walks and a wild pitch, the game was knotted at 4-4, which held up till the end.
Chester conceded six hits for nine strikeouts in 4.1 frames, with reliever James Vaughn giving up one hit for five K2s in 2.2 digs.
For the Rangers Seb Heintze-Unger went the distance, collecting 10 strikeouts for six hits in seven innings.
The second contest was like a 15-round boxing fight, with neither side surrendering, up to when time was called after eight innings.
First it was the Rangers to take an early lead, in the bottom of the opening frame, after Prokopec walked and Child put one out for a 2-0 lead.
But then it was the Dodgers turn to punch back, with a four-run rally at the top of the third, changing the game’s momentum.
Harry Bastian walked, Caskey singled, Nick Wallis hit a sac fly, Chester singled, Phillips hit a RBI double and Jake Shotton plated a run with his hit to rightfield.
In the bottom of the third dig, Gawler pulled one back after hits to Lambert and Prokopec, and Pelletier’s RBI ground-out, to make it 4-3.
Then it was the Dodgers who all but put Gawler on the canvas with a run at the top of the fifth (Jett Chenoweth RBI single) and two in the sixth (Chester single, error, Shotton sac fly and a wild pitch) to go 7-3 up.
But like in those famous ‘Rocky’ movies, it’s never over until it’s over, as the Rangers rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth, on Prokopec’s RBI single and Pelletier’s two-run hit up the middle, to trail by a single run, 7-6.
Hits by Nathan Schreier and Seb Heintze-Unger set up Ethan Badcock’s RBI groundout in the bottom of the seventh to tie the scores at 7-7 and force an extra inning, with neither side adding to the tallies.
From the mound both teams had two pitchers throw four innings each. For Gawler, Tyler Renken gave up six hits for two K2s, while Badcock conceded four hits for three K2s. Dodgers starter Jaryd Hardman struck out three for four hits, while Zach Tibbits gave up four hits for five K2s.
GLENELG AND GOODWOOD SPLIT AT Mortlock Park, with the Tigers winning the first encounter 6-3 and the Indians walking off the second clash, 5-4.
It looked like Goodwood was in the box seat in the first contest, leading 3-2 going into the top of the sixth inning, where Glenelg scored four runs to turn the game around, and hang on for a 6-3 win.
At the top of the first frame, Liam McCallum walked and came home on Alex Steff’s double to give the Tigers a 1-0 start.
The answer from the Indians was immediate, as Billy Sutton singled and scored on Grif Weber’s two-bagger to make it a 1-1 ballgame in the bottom of the dig.
Connor Hill had a RBI hit at the top of the third to put Glenelg 2-1 up, with Goodwood again levelling the scores in the bottom of the third, after Dylan Howarth singled and came home on Sutton’s hit.
For the first time in the game the Indians managed to wrest the lead, when in the bottom of the fourth, Henry Wiese singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scampered home on Liam Allen’s hit up the middle – 3-2 Goodwood.
But then the Tigers took control with a four-run top of the sixth, after hits to Dylan Bentley, Jacob Eldridge, Bailey Edgar (RBI) and Tom Huttunen (two RBIs).
Jayden Eldridge pitched six innings for the win, conceding nine hits for five strikeouts, while Tom Fitzgerald took the loss, giving up six hits for six K2s in 5.1 innings.
Coming on in relief for Goodwood, veteran pitcher Darren Fidge threw 1.2 frames for four hits and two strikeouts in his 700th division one game for the Indians.
Game two saw the teams mirror each other for the first five innings, with no score until the top of the fourth, where Glenelg broke through with a pair of runs, after Steff was hit by a pitch, Hill singled and a wild throw scored both runners.
In the bottom of the fourth, a Peter Paech two-run single saw the Indians answer, to keep the ballgame tied, 2-2.
The fifth frame saw one run apiece, the Tigers through hits to Oliver Alexander and McCallum, and Goodwood via a Weber sac fly.
A home run from Saxon Gibbs in the bottom of the sixth saw the Indians take the lead, 4-3, with just one more inning.
Glenelg managed to level the scores in the top of the seventh, when McCallum singled, went to second base on a wild pitch and came home on Dylan Bentley’s hit, and with two out, Fidge came into the fray and struck out the final batter to give his side a chance for victory.
And it doesn’t get more exciting, as Cooper Pratt ran out an infield hit, Heeps bunted, and after walks to Weber and Wiese, a fielder’s choice left the bases loaded and two out – and give Fidge the win in his 701st game.
Up steps Paech, and with a full count, received a ball and walked off the win with a base on balls!
EAST TORRENS MADE SURE of a finals spot with two victories against Northern Districts at Ingle Farm, winning game one 9-1 and the second contest 9-4.
Aiden Lucas hit two-run homers in the first and third frames to stake the Redsox an early 4-0 lead in game one.
Then a five-run rally at the top of the seventh dig made the game safe, which featured three hit batsmen, two walks and hits to Charlie Ashcroft and Jack Wilton. North managed a run in the bottom of the seventh, on Steve Matulic’s home run.
Harry Deliyannis pitched the complete game for the win, conceding three hits for 12 strikeouts in seven innings. Luke Barrientos pitched well for the Reds, giving up four hits for seven K2s in six frames, with his only blemish those two Lucas dingers.
The second contest was close early, with East Torrens managing to inch in front and pull away with single runs in four of the final five digs – a three-run sixth the major difference-maker.
North scored a run in the bottom of the opening inning, when Kevin Whatley singled and came home on Barrientos’ two-bagger.
At the top of the second the Redsox took the lead with a pair of runs, after hits to Wilton, Dalton Probert and Carter Powell.
But the Reds surprise by scoring twice in the bottom of the second, after consecutive hits to Nick Clifton, Dan Oswald, Tyson Lees and Whatley, to go 3-2 up.
East Torrens brought the game on even terms at the top of the third with a run, through a Deliyannis single and Braeden Ashworth’s RBI double, with Connor Yeatman’s home run at the top of the fourth dig putting the Redsox ahead to stay, at 4-3.
In the fifth frame Lucas doubled and came home on Mark Stewart’s single, while the three-run sixth was caused by four free passes, a Probert single and a Ashcroft sac fly, to make it 8-3.
The final run at the top of the seventh scored after two hit batsmen and a pair of wild pitches.
Zac Stroud pitched three innings in relief to claim the win, conceding one hit for six strikeouts.
