CATS TAKE CREAM OFF THE TOP🏆

By Robert Laidlaw
WALKERVILLE IS THE 2024-25 Premier League Softball champions, after beating Seacombe 4-0 in the grand final at West Beach Parks on Saturday night.
It was close early, with the Cats scoring a run in the bottom of the opening inning, with that 1-0 scoreline then holding up until the bottom of the sixth frame, where Walkerville made the premiership safe with three further runs.
Pitcher Taylor Caudill, fresh off her Kath Correll Medal win last Sunday, demonstrated why she was the best pitcher in the competition with another outstanding performance, to lead Walkerville from the circle.
Over seven innings Caudill gave up just two hits and no walks, while collecting 11 strikeouts to claim the win from the circle – and win grand final MVP honours.
In the bottom of the first dig Chelsea Robinson picked a two-out walk, and scampered all the way around the bases on Ellie Smith’s big double – 1-0 the Cats.
The Tigers best scoring chance came at the top of the fourth frame, when Neely Peterson was hit by a pitch and Becky Havis singled, but the next three batters were retired to extinguish the threat.
Walkerville threatened to break through again in the bottom of the fourth, after Smith led off with a walk, but a sensational diving catch by Havis and a bullet throw to first base for the double play, kept the score at 1-0.
Playing the short game in the bottom of the fifth, Steph Gall and Erin Stone reached base on errors for the Cats, and when Baileigh Loux was hit by a pitch, the bases were loaded.
Sophie King walked in a run, which forced a pitching change, as Whitney Shepherd came into the fray, to replace Regan Dias, who had allowed two hits for five K2s in 4.1 innings.
The first batter to face Shepherd was Robinson, whose outfield fly ball was dropped, which allowed two more runs to score, to make it 4-0.
Sophie Roberts, who was the victim in the sensational double play after Havis’ catch in the fourth, again was unlucky in the sixth, with her hard-hit line-drive to second base, which was caught and turned over for another double play.
At the top of the seventh dig Seacombe had its final chance to get back into the game, but Caudill shut the gate with three strikeouts to ensure the flag was won by the Cats.

WOODVILEL IS THE 2024/25 women’s division one baseball premiers, after beating minor premier Sturt 12-9 in a titanic battle at West Beach Parks on Sunday.
The game was in the bag for the Senators, then slipped through their fingers, before a late rush got them home.
At the top of the opening inning Woodville scored the game’s first run, after Amara Quinn walked and hits by Alice Brown and Sarah McMahon.
Then at the top of the fourth, four errors by the Saints gifted Woodville two runs, as it went 3-0 up, with Sturt answering with a run in the bottom of the frame, on four consecutive walks.
But then it looked like the Senators had put themselves in a winning position with two runs at the top of the fifth dig, after hits to McMahon, Darna Boers-Veen and Beth Lee, and Jemila Dadd’s sac bunt made it 5-1.
A huge rally then saw a different complexion come over the game, as Sturt scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth to grab a 7-5 lead – built on two errors, three free passes and hits to Elisa Gooley, Ellie Smith and Charlotte Lightbody.
It was a shock to most people in attendance, but Woodville remained composed and scored twice at the top of the sixth to level the ballgame at 7-7, on two-out RBI hits to Brown and McMahon.
Still the game remained in the balance and the Saints re-took the lead in the bottom of the frame, after a pair of walks, an error and Claire Warburton’s RBI groundout to first base – 8-7.
While Georgia Davis had been solid on the mound for Sturt, pitching six innings for eight hits and seven strikeouts, she was relieved in the seventh and Woodville took advantage to score five big runs, on five big hits – to Lee, Dakota Ding, Morrison, Kelsey Goldspink and Brown.
There was still time for Sturt in the bottom of the seventh, but the Saints only scored one run, although it left the bases loaded when the third out weas made.
Alice Brown, who pitched four innings for one hit and five strikeouts, while also collecting three hits with the bat, was named the grand final MVP.
It was Woodville’s second flag, after winning its first two seasons ago.

PORT STEAL FIRST SEMI

By Robert Laidlaw
AN AMAZING STOLEN BASE has propelled Port Adelaide into the Premier League Softball preliminary final, after Bri Marcelino stole home in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Magpies a 3-2 victory over West Torrens at West Beach Parks.
With pitchers Liz Engler (Port) and the Eagles’ Steph Trzcinski in top form from the circle, scores were locked at 1-1 after the regulation seven frames, forcing extra innings.
West Torrens hit the front for the first time in the top of the eighth, after placed runner Jacqui Beal scored on Amber Hood’s two-out hit up the middle.
Then it was do-or-die for the Magpies in the bottom of the eighth. Chloe Davis was the placed runner at second base, with Marcelino laying down a bunt, which initially put Davis at third and herself at first, but an error scored Davis to tie the scores at 2-2.
Jess Maslin then walked, and Charlize Callaghan’s bunt advanced the runners, with ‘sneaky’ Marcelino stealing home to end another exciting clash between the grand finalists of the past three seasons.
Earlier in the game Port took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth frame, after Marcelino and Maslin walked, and with one out Engler hit a ball that fell in at rightfield, and after being returned to the infield, an error allowed Marcelino to score.
A pair of errors helped the Eagles tie up the ball game at the top of the sixth dig, after Cailtin Holt walked and eventually scored when Emma Burridge reached base on a wild throw.
And after a scoreless seventh inning, the eighth frame was played to decide the contest.
Engler went the distance, conceding four hits for four strikeouts to claim the win, while Trzcinski gave up three hits in 7.1 digs for 11 K2s.
Port will now play Seacombe in Wednesday night’s preliminary final for a place in Saturday’s premiership decider against Walkerville.
WALKERVILLE SURVIVED A LATE SCARE to beat Seacombe 6-1 and advance into the 2024/25 grand final.
Going into the top of the seventh and final frame, the Cats looked comfortable at 6-1 up but Seacombe mounted a huge threat, with hits from Georgia Tomkinson, Regan Dias and Neely Peterson, but could not break through.
It was all Walkerville early and the Cats deserved to be the first team through to the grand final.
In the bottom of the opening inning lead-off batter Baileigh Loux tripled, and after Sophie King reached on an infield grounder, Chelsea Robinson hit a two-run single to put Walkerville 2-0 up.
At the top of the third dig, Sacha Mutze singled, Dias reached on an error and Peterson had a RBI single to close the gap for Seacombe, to 2-1.
But the game was won in the bottom of the third when the Cats scored three times, after consecutive RBI hits to Robinson, Ellie Smith and Sophie Roberts.
A Loux RBI double after Erin Stone walked in the bottom of the fourth was the final score of the game, as Walkerville advanced to its first premiership decider since its 2019 flag.
Taylor Caudill went the distance to claim the win, conceding eight hits for 12 strikeouts in seven innings.

STURT HAS WON BACK-TO-BACK FLAGS for the first time in club history, after beating Henley & Grange two games to none in the division one baseball grand final at West Beach Parks.
The Saints backed up Friday’s 7-1 victory by winning Saturday’s clash 4-1, with Damon Arnold leading the way from the mound.
In 7.2 innings, Arnold gave up eight scattered hits for six strikeouts, as he kept the Henley batters off balance with his consistent pitching.
Initially it looked like the Rams were going to take control in the opening frame but had to settle for just one run.
Jack Partington led off with a bunt, which was thrown away and left him on second base. But Liam Bull hit a hard liner to infielder Mitch Lightbody, who caught the ball and doubled Partington off of second base.
Wilson Lee then hit a two-bagger and scored on Lou Helmig’s single, and when Koki Yonezawa also singled, it looked like Henley was going to pull away early, but Arnold struck out the next hitter to defuse the situation.
The Saints equalised at the top of the second frame, when Jackson Brebner-Russ doubled and came home when Zac Altamura’s outfield fly was dropped.
With two out in the fifth dig Sturt took the lead, after Mitch Lightbody doubled and came home on Terrell Joyce’s single, to give the Saints a 2-1 advantage.
At the top of the sixth Matt MacBeth singled, Altamura walked and after two wild pitches, MacBeth scored to make it 3-1, while in the seventh, Jordan McArdle singled and scored on Brebner-Russ’ double for the final score of the game.
While Arnold claimed the win, Lightbody did a good job in relief for Sturt, striking out three hitters in 1.1 innings.
Lee pitched six frames in taking the loss, conceding seven hits for eight K2s, while Partington gave up two hits on three digs for three K2s.

SAINTS HAVE ONE HAND ON THE CUP

By Robert Laidlaw
STURT IS HALF WAY TO achieving division one baseball club history, after beating Henley & Grange 7-1 in Friday night’s first game of the 2024-25 grand final, at West Beach Parks.
If the Saints can win game two on Saturday night (7.30pm), it will be the first time Sturt has won back-to-back division one premierships – but if it loses, a deciding game three will be played on Sunday at 3.30pm.
Game one was tight early, as the Saints’ Ky Hampton and Jordy Grose for Henley were in an absorbing battle, with neither daring to blink, as both pitchers did not give up a hit over the first three innings, with the game locked at 0-0.
Finally with one out at the top of the fourth, Terrell Joyce doubled, went to third base on Jordan McArdle’s grounder and came home on a balk – 1-0 Sturt.
But the Rams answered immediately in the bottom of the fourth, and could have taken the lead except for an exceptional double play.
With one out, Liam Bull tripled, Wilson Lee singled him home and went to third base on Lou Helmig’s hit, but Koki Yonezawa’s hard line drive smash was caught by Hampton, who threw to third base to catch Lee in no-man’s land.
An error opened the door for the Saints at the top of the fifth dig, when Simon Baumer hit a RBI double and scored on Harry Knuckey’s single for a pair of runs and a 3-1 lead.
Then the disastrous sixth for Henley, as a two-out error after Simon Adkins and Jackson Brebner-Russ collected hits, set up Knuckey’s RBI single and Mitch Lightbody’s two-run double, as Sturt scored four runs to go 7-1 up, which remained the final score.
Hampton went the distance, conceding four hits for eight strikeouts in nine innings, while Grose went eight frames for eight hits and four K2s.
The play of the day was a sensational catch in the second dig by Henley rightfielder Helmig, who ran hard along the home run fence into foul territory, leapt high and grabbed the ball with no fear for his own safety.

ANOTHER HENLEY VERSUS STURT GRAND FINAL

By Robert Laidlaw
ONE TEAM DID IT THE HARD WAY, while the other was untroubled in winning in straight sets, as division one baseball has back-to-back combatants in the 2025 grand final, Henley & Grange and Sturt.
The Rams lost game one on Saturday and managed to squeak home 7-6 in Sunday’s first clash to level the series, before triumphing 9-4 in the decider, against a gallant Southern Districts at West Lakes.
As for Sturt, it won both contests on Sunday against West Torrens, after Saturday’s game one was postponed because of the heat at Mitcham.
HENLEY & GRANGE WAS LIVING on the edge in game two after losing Saturday’s first clash 9-7 to Southern Districts, at West Lakes.
It looked good early, as the Rams scored three times in the opening inning, (singles to Jack Partington and Liam Bull, an error, and Lou Helmig’s two-run dinger), and two in the second (Bull’s RBI double and Wilson Lee’s sac fly) to lead 5-0.
But then the Hawks mounted a fightback, first in the third frame on Nick Hutchings’ RBI double, and another in the fifth when Hutchings smashed a home run, to cut the lead to 5-2.
Then the bombshell hit by Brett Hattersley, who tied the ballgame up at 5-5 in the top of the seventh dig with a three-run dinger, after Jake Campbell had doubled and Nick Hutchings walked.
A two-out error then opened the door for Henley in the bottom of the seventh, when Luke Trevaskis reached on the misplay, advanced on Jet Clohessy’s single and came home on a wild pitch – 6-5 the Rams.
South could smell a grand final berth and again levelled the ballgame in the top of the eighth, when Luke Hansen put the baseball over the fence.
But the never-say-die Rams came back again in the bottom of the eighth with a go-ahead run, after Liam Bull singled, went to third base on Lou Helmig’s double and scored on another wild pitch.
With just one more chance to get back into the game the Hawks could not score in the top of the ninth, and fell agonisingly close to an upset victory.
Wilson Lee started for Henley and pitched 6.1 innings for five hits and 10 strikeouts, while Jordan Hodges collected the win in relief, after conceding one hit for two K2s in 2.2 frames.
When the deciding game was just one pitch old, Southern Districts had taken a 1-0 lead on Jake Campbell’s lead-off home run, which sent shock waves through the Henley camp.
It did not take long for the Rams to respond though, as they set up the eventual victory with an incredible six-run rally in the bottom of the second inning.
Three walks were followed by RBI hits to Phil Acosta and Liam Bull, then Wilson Lee smashed a two-run home run, for a 6-1 lead.
At the top of the sixth frame, Nick Hutchings singled and Brett Hattersley hit a two-run dinger with none out, which forced a pitching change, as Lou Helmig replaced starter Jordan Hodges.
In response Henley scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, on Lee’s RBI single and Hodges two-run hit, to go 9-3 up.
While Helmig had pitched the Rams out of trouble in the sixth, he pitched into trouble at the top of the seventh, when he loaded the bases on two walks and a Tailen Hobson single, then walked in a run when he put Campbell on, and with none out.
But Helmig then struck out the next two hitters and induced a groundout to restrict the damage to a single run.
Liam Bull finished the job on the mound with a three-up and three down ninth dig to ensure Henley will be playing in next weekend’s grand final series at West Beach against Sturt.
After winning Sunday’s first game in relief, Jordan Hodges pitched five innings of the decider to claim the victory, conceding four hits for three strikeouts.
BIG HOME RUNS PROVED THE major difference in Sturt’s 12-2 and 7-3 victories over West Torrens at Mitcham.
In the first game the Saints scored seven runs in the first two innings, with Terrell Joyce smashing a three-run dinger (after Harry Knuckey walked and Mitch Lightbody singled) and then a two-run homer, (after Knuckey hit a RBI triple and Lightbody a RBI double).
The Eagles scored a run at the top of the second on Austin Gallagher’s home run and another in the third, after hits to James McFarlane and Mason Clavell, and Gallagher’s sac fly, to trail 7-2.
But it was all Sturt from that point, with a run in the bottom of the fifth (Zach Altamura sac fly), another in the sixth (Simon Baumer sac fly) and two in the seventh (Lightbody’s two-run double), with the final run coming in the eighth on Baumer’s RBI single.
Ky Hampton went the journey to record the win, conceding eight hits for five strikeouts in eight innings.
And another big home run set up Sturt’s 7-3 game two victory, when Jordan McArdle smashed a grand slam dinger in the Saints’ five-run third dig, following singles by Altamura, Simon Adkins and Lightbody, and Joyce’s walk.
West Torrens had taken a 2-0 lead at the top of the second inning, after hits to Tom McGarry, Nathan Vanderlinden, Joel Chapman and Nico Vanderlinden.
The final six innings were tight, with Sturt scoring twice in the sixth, on Adkins sac fly and when Lightbody was hit by a pitch with bases loaded, and the Eagles managed the game’s final run when Gallagher deposited the ball over the fence in the eighth dig.
Damon Arnold pitched seven frames for the win, giving up five hits for two strikeouts.
With the Saints outfield taking 13 catches, many batting rallies for West Torrens were stalled, as Knuckey took seven catches in centrefield and on the flanks, Joyce and Adkins took three each.

TIGERS SEAL THE DEAL

By Robert Laidlaw
SEACOMBE HAS QUALIFIED FOR the Premier League Softball second semi-final after beating Hills 10-1 at West Beach Parks.
With Port Adelaide losing to Glenelg, the Tigers will finish at least second after Wednesday’s final minor round, where the Magpies play Hills and Walkerville play Glenelg.
If the Cats win, Seacombe finish second, while if Walkerville lose, the Tigers grab the minor premiership.
Against the Heat, Seacombe got an early jump with two runs at the top of the opening inning, after Brianne Lint smashed a home run, Neely Peterson doubled and Abbie Mossman hit a RBI single.
In the bottom of the first Hills scored its only run of the game, when Abbie Bastian singled, Chloe Zakelj bunted and Georgia King hit a RBI double.
The Tigers struggled over the next three frames, with just one run in the third dig, when Becky Havis walked, Whitney Shepherd singled and an error.
But then an explosive seven-run top of the fifth ensured Seacombe the points, which featured two errors, two walks and hits to Regan Dias, Lint, Peterson, Havis, Shepherd and Kathy Pash.
Dias pitched five innings for six hits and eight strikeouts to claim the win from the circle.
GLENELG HAS BEEN THE most successful team in the competition since beating Hills at Mount Barker on Friday, February 14, with just a 1-0 loss to Seacombe from the past seven games, which has included wins against the Tigers, Port and West Torrens, and a 2-2 draw with Walkerville.
Rebels’ most recent success, a 14-5 victory over Port Adelaide has put the Magpies’ double chances in jeopardy.
While Glenelg will finish the season in fifth spot, Port need to beat Hills on Wednesday and rely on Walkerville going down to Rebels to ensure the double chance – otherwise it will be a knockout final against West Torrens.
The Magpies looked likely winners against Glenelg early, when they scored three times in the bottom of the opening inning to lead 3-0, after hits to Jess Goldyn, Briana Marcelino (triple), Jess Maslin (double) and Liz Engler.
But then everything came unravelled for Port as Glenelg went on a scoring spree at the top of the second frame, with six unearned runs.
With two out, hits to Courtney Shepherd and Jade Peterson, and a walk to Brianna McGee loaded the bases.
Then on a muffed outfield fly Rebels scored twice, and after Sydney Horton walked, another error saw a run in, before Lee Lankhorst hit a two-run single and Emily Price had a RBI hit, to make it 6-3 Glenelg.
A pair of walks, hits to Georgia Bevan, Lankhorst and Shepherd, and a Sasha Penglase sac fly saw another four runs at the top of the fourth, while in the bottom of the frame, pinch hitter Amber Pitfield hit a RBI double for the Magpies, to make it 10-4.
But Rebels hadn’t finished yet, and on the back of Price’s three-run bomb, scored a further four runs at the top of the fifth, while Port could only respond with one run in the bottom of the fifth and final dig.
Price went the distance from the circle for Glenelg, allowing nine hits for eight strikeouts in five innings.
WEST TORRENS STRUCK LATE but it was good enough to beat Sturt 3-1, which finished the Falcons season.
At the top of the third inning Hannah Thoo singled, Emily Bullock bunted and Sarah Tonkin had a RBI single to give Sturt a 1-0 lead, which held up until the bottom of the fifth frame.
The Eagles rode some fortune to score twice in the fifth to grab a 2-1 advantage. Amber Hood laid down a safe bunt, Lana Kaesler walked, Emma Burridge had a RBI single and Sophie Hoyle reached on an error, which scored the second run.
Then in the bottom of the sixth, Caitlin Holt reached second base on a wild throw and came home on Hood’s RBI hit, to make it 3-1.
Sturt had one more chance at the top of the seventh and final dig, when Riley Moore singled, Thoo doubled and Emily Bullock walked, but an out at home, a strikeout and an infield grounder shut the rally down.
