Hobbledehoy

Hobbledehoy Recordings from exceptional artists Committed through a considered approach to quality, respect and individuality.

We proudly represent recordings from forward-thinkers including Sophie Hutchings, Caspian, Deafcult, and more. From day one, the focus has been on providing forward-thinking artists with a collaborative partner sharing their vision, helping them build equity and retain ownership of their work. Working with only a small group of artists allows us to focus on the finer details, affording the artist freedom and room to develop — on their own terms.

One of the nicest things about doing this label for 20 years is that I can still hear something and get properly excited about it.

The Remotes may be the newest addition to Hobbledehoy, but there’s also a funny bit of history in there for me. Ollie Browne’s other band Art of Fighting have been important to my world for a very long time and their acclaimed Wires album was reissued with Hobble, so getting to release a new Remotes record all these years later feels a little surreal.

Pictured are The Remotes pre Y2K in 1999, prior to Laura joining the lineup.

Ready For It came out earlier this year, 28 years after The Remotes first started making music together. I love that they’ll be at Hobble20 alongside bands whose histories with the label go back much further.

The internet is forever. Until it isn’t.

In 2019, Myspace confirmed it had lost millions of music files uploaded to the platform. For some artists, those files were the only surviving online copies of their work. I wrote about it at the time, but seven years later the idea feels even more relevant. Platforms disappear. Hard drives fail. Formats become obsolete. Things that feel permanent often aren’t.

One of the responsibilities I’ve come to see in running Hobbledehoy isn’t simply releasing records. It’s looking after them. Ian MacKayeof Discord has flown this flag for a long time. Keeping the masters, artwork, information and stories around them, and making sure the work remains available.

Artists make the work, and a part of its life is entrusted to us.

The Internet Is Forever. Until It Isn’t. New editorial on the Hobbledehoy website (Redux of a post I made years ago).

Artists, forever.

“Missing You” by Holly Throsby is out today ☺️ When Holly first shared the Normal Magic album demos with me, I couldn’t get this one out of my head. It’s an absolute heart breaker 💔

Fourteen Nights At Sea have released many records with Hobbledehoy across nine years, almost half the label’s existence. Their music capturing people the world over.

As important to me is their generosity as artists, friends and part of the independent music community around this label. There have so many moments, so many stories, too many to count really... where people from this band have stepped in to help other artists or the label, without hesitation 😊

It feels especially fitting that Hobble20 is happening at The Old Bar, a venue established and run by Fourteen Nights At Sea drummer Liam. There are few places that could better hold twenty years of this label.

Fourteen Nights At Sea play Hobble20 with Deafcult, Luke Howard and The Remotes.

Back in 2008, I saw a live video of CHARGE GROUP and decided I wanted Hobbledehoy to work with them.

At the time, the label was only a couple of years old. I had no idea how it would happen, or whether it ever would. It took years before our paths properly crossed.

There’s always something to learn from working with artists. The great ones change the way you see things... they challenge your taste, your assumptions, and sometimes your understanding of what music can be.

Matt Blackman’s work has done that for me repeatedly. Charge Group, and the Purplene records that later became part of Hobbledehoy too, have always held a special place in the story of the label.

The latest Archive Note is about Charge Group, artistic ambition, patience, and the work that stays with you.

Read it now via the website.

Luke Howard has released more records through Hobbledehoy than any other artist.

Across albums, EPs, collaborations and experiments, Luke has been a defining part of the label’s story for over half its existance. He has an incredible artistic mind: restless, thoughtful, ambitious and he continues to find new territory without ever losing the emotional clarity at the centre of his work.

I am in absolute awe of what Luke creates, and enormously proud that Hobbledehoy has been home to so much of it.

Luke will perform at Hobble20 alongside Deafcult, Fourteen Nights At Sea and The Remotes.

Twenty years of Hobbledehoy Records, September 19 at Old Bar Fitzroy VIC, with my dear friends Deafcult, Luke Howard, Fourteen Nights At Sea and The Remotes. Hobbledehoy has been an enormous part of my life, for over half my life, but it really does still feel so exciting.

What began as a bit of an experiment for a 19 year old naïve, optimistic, punk kid, has grown into a carefully built catalog of distinctive, art-forward voices. Now approaching a century of releases, I'm very proud Hobbledehoy remains fiercely independent, with every bit of profit split 50/50 with our artists. Twenty years is a long time... and amongst this well-documented decline of the independent music biz, your support means everything.

I hope to see you there. ♥
Artists, forever.
