Jellyfish Sting Awareness - Do you know what to do if you get stung?
With the rain gone and strong winds pushing marine life closer to shore, Irukandji, Box Jellyfish, and Bluebottles are more common. Be prepared!
🦠 Irukandji – Tiny but deadly. Their sting can cause Irukandji syndrome, leading to nausea, pain, difficulty breathing, and even cardiac complications. Immediate medical attention is a must! While waiting for Reefs ambulance we rinsed with small amount of vinegar that was left at the beach and an icepack. We believe this immediate treatment helped stop the venom spreading as the pain was localised to his foot and leg.
🪼 Box Jellyfish – Their venom attacks the heart, nervous system, and skin, causing excruciating pain. Vinegar helps neutralise the venom—never rub the sting!
💙 Bluebottle – Commonly mistaken for harmless, but they pack a sting! Avoid rubbing, rinse with seawater (not freshwater), and apply hot water to relieve pain.
Prevention is key – Wear a stinger suit and always carry an Oceanic Tales Marine Kit when heading to the beach!
