🥐 BUSINESS OF THE WEEK

Most cafe cabinets in Albany run to banana bread and caramel slice. The one at Taxi Stand Coffee Bar has gevulde koek in it.

That's a Dutch pastry filled with almond paste, and it's baked by Nienke Tempelman, who moved over from the Netherlands and also works the coffee machine there. Her label is Little Dutch Chef.

Alongside it you'll find sprits, kaneel koek, speculaasjes and a biscuit called a bokkenpootje, which translates as goat's foot.

Her Dutch customers say it tastes like home, and they're a much harder crowd to please than the rest of us. You can order direct through her Bakesy shop with two days notice.

Last weekend for the circus, and it's Father's Day Sunday.

🎪 The Harrington Circus Show packs up at Centennial Park after Sunday, last shows 12pm and 3pm. Aerial acts, clowns and magic, kids under three free, from $20.

🎵 Friday's got RobV - rvmusicwa at Wilson's Brewery Bar from 5pm, Rock Salt Restaurant Albany's Texas Smokehouse Feast, and WAAPA students with two local schools for Radio Active at the Albany Entertainment Centre.

🏉 Saturday's the Great Southern Football League preliminary final, Railways Football & Sporting Club Albany v Royals Football Club Albany, winner meets Albany Sharks Football & Sporting Club in the grand final. Netball A1 and A2 finals from 1pm too.

😂 Then Hardy Croucher road-tests a new hour of stand-up at the Spectrum Theatre, $10.

Plus Father's Day feeds at Rock Salt, Karribank and the Premier Hotel Albany, the Albany Farmers Market Western Australia, Albany Boatshed Markets Sunday, and Sarabande playing Charpentier in Denmark.

🎨 BUSINESS OF THE WEEK
Oceans Church has launched From Here to Next, a capacity building program born from one parent's search for real opportunities in Albany for her own son, a young adult living with disability. The program is therapist-led by an Occupational Therapist and Art/Hospitality teacher.

Small groups of four work through creative workshops like painting and printmaking, or build real hospitality skills through the Cafe Culture stream, all while building life skills, work readiness and friendships. New 10-week terms run Tuesdays and Wednesdays, funded through NDIS Capacity Building or Core budgets.

The West Australian Symphony Orchestra's in town Friday night and Saturday arvo, and the footy finals start the same weekend.

📖 Thursday's got two free talks in Albany, Dianne Wolfer on her war stories and how Fremantle overtook Albany as WA's port.

🎼 Beethoven's Seventh, Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet overture and Prokofiev's First Piano Concerto on one bill at the Albany Entertainment Centre, Asher Fisch conducting. Thirty bucks if you're under 30.

🏉 Great Southern Football League finals start Saturday with Railways Football & Sporting Club Albany v Albany Sharks Football & Sporting Club at Railways Oval, then Royals Football Club Albany v Denmark Walpole Football Club Sunday, both 2:30pm. The OFA Grand Final's at Boxwood Saturday.

🎺 Saturday night the Rainbow Coast Big Band bring seventeen pieces to the City of Albany Arts & Culture Town Hall for a swing dance ball, $20–$40.

Katherine Spargo runs Sunday Rest Club, a monthly Restorative Yoga and Yoga Nidra session at the Denmark Yoga Centre built entirely around doing less. She trained under a teacher who studied directly with Judith Hanson Lasater, one of the founding teachers of Restorative Yoga, and has practised these techniques herself for over a decade.

Sessions run 2.30 to 4pm on selected Sundays and use props to fully support the body into rest. No flexibility, experience or yoga background needed, just a willingness to slow down. It runs monthly, and NBN readers get 10% off their first session with the code NOBLUFF.

Baker Boy and Miss Kaninna headline The City of Albany Town Hall this Saturday night, with plenty either side of it.

🎪 The Harrington Circus Show sets up at Centennial Park Thursday, through to 6 September.

🎤 Friday's free one: INKABEE and JJ Vacant play an all-ages pop-up at the City of Albany Arts & Culture Vancouver Arts Centre, 2:30pm, first in first served. Then Sign of Four at the Denmark Country Club, Michelle Nicolle and Paul Grabowsky at the Albany Entertainment Centre, and The Arcade Lights at Six Degrees Albany.

🛍️ Saturday starts early with the Albany Farmers Market Western Australia on Collie Street from 8am, a free karate come-and-try in Denmark, and a Denmark Environment Centre black cockatoo awareness day at Strickland Street.

Most family businesses only have the hard conversations about succession during a crisis. Lincolns Accountants is running a webinar on how to have them on purpose instead, using a Family Charter to work through roles, fairness and expectations before pressure forces the issue.

🎨 Thursday's got Demi Skye's Woman is Vessel exhibition opening at City of Albany Arts & Culture Vancouver Arts Centre, plus the Voices of the South book launch at The City of Albany Town Hall, 7:30pm.

🎤 Then three tribute shows land in a row: Neil Diamond songs Friday, Broadway's biggest hits Saturday and Roy Orbison Sunday, all at the Albany Entertainment Centre, booked separately.

🛍️ Saturday's stacked too: Albany Farmers Market Western Australia and Denmark Scout Hall Markets from 8am, Mt Barker's Safety & Preparedness Expo from 10am, and Denmark Walpole Football Club's Big Splash Fundraiser for Parkinson's WA from midday.
