Some couples you have to coax a smile out of. These two, we couldn’t get one off their faces.
The day began at St Mary’s Coptic Orthodox in Kensington — a church full of family, and the faith the two of them have built their life around. Whatever you believe, you can feel a room like that.
Then Leonda by the Yarra, and a night they gave themselves to completely. No watching from the edge, no waiting for the good bit. They were in it from the first song to the last.
And they left the way you’d want to leave: through a corridor of sparklers, down to the water, and away up the Yarra in a water taxi.

Speeches kill the vibe. Not because people are bad at them — because of how many there are, how long they run, and where they sit in the night.

Here is the rule, from someone who has stood at the back of a few thousand receptions.

Twenty minutes. Four speeches. Five minutes each.

01 — One set of parents
02 — The other set
03 — Best man and maid of honour, together. One speech, not two.
04 — The two of you

Run them straight after entrée. All four, back to back, done. Everyone is seated, everyone is fed, nobody is drunk yet, and the whole night is still ahead of you.

And your MC is not the fifth speech. Name, relationship, sit down. This is where twenty minutes quietly becomes forty.

What does not work is one speech per course. The room warms up, the music starts, people get out of their seats — and then a microphone comes on and everybody sits back down. Do that four times across the night and the room never comes back.

It is a wedding. It is not a conference, and it is not an awards ceremony. Nobody needs the childhood retrospective.

Your guests will leave talking about how much fun they had. They will not leave talking about the speeches.

Nobody tells you this until it’s too late to fix it.

Every couple asks how much time we need for photographs, and almost nobody gives them a real answer — so here are the actual blocks, in the order they happen, with the minutes attached.

The short version: it’s around two and a half hours, and it is not one block. It’s stitched into the gaps your day already has. Done properly you barely notice it. Crammed into one slot at the end, it eats your cocktail hour and your golden hour at the same time.

On paper none of that belongs together. Then you meet Kaleb and Monique and it’s the only thing that could have worked.
We don’t have a house look we drop on top of people. We have three ways of shooting — Editorial, Cinematic, Art Doco — and the couple decides which one their day is. Kaleb and Monique were never going to be soft and pretty. Their day wanted hard light, deep shadow and a bit of swagger, so that’s what we shot.
