It’s the summer of 2024, and I’m strolling the quiet backstreets of Port Elliot when I spot a striking new building on Elliot Street. A sleek, industrial-style warehouse tucked next to Yeo House, just a stone’s throw from the ever-busy Factory 9 precinct and only eight-hundred metres from the café strip of The Strand.
Pressed up against the window, I feel it immediately: potential. The kind of feeling you get when something special is about to happen.
Fast forward one year, and I find myself stepping inside that very space – now fully realised – and sitting across from the person who brought it all to life.
Small Circle, at 3/10 Elliot Street, is not your typical hair salon – and Kieren Kuzyk is not your typical founder.
A seasoned hairdresser and barber, Kieren has always been drawn to more than just the cut and colour of his craft. Read more in our spring issue!see_

Kaurna, Narungga and Ngarrindjeri artist and curator, Carly Tarkari Dodd recalls the moment when art and making started to take on a deeper meaning for her. She was at Camp Coorong near Meningie with her family. It was there she met Ngarrindjeri artist Aunty Ellen Trevorrow, a world-renowned cultural weaver.
‘I made this little basket there and I still love it – it’s so little and wonky and not neat at all,’ Carly says with a smile while holding it up for me to see. See more of Carly’s work in our spring issue!art

American River on Kangaroo Island (KI) was named by American sealers in the early 1800s, mistaking the long inland channel for a river. It’s here you’ll find Kangaroo Island Oysters – a family-run business owned by Todd and Marisa Packer and managed by their son, Jack. The quiet, sheltered waters of Eastern Cove make it the ideal spot for an oyster farm.
Shellfish farming must be in the Packer family blood. Todd is no stranger to these shores – more than thirty years ago, he worked for seafood company A Raptis & Sons when they were setting up to farm mussels. ‘I helped set up the very first lines here,’ he recalls. ‘There were no sheds – this was all just a big carpark.’ Todd went on to complete an Advanced Diploma in Aquaculture at the Lincoln Marine Science Centre.
Marisa, meanwhile, came from a background in the medical and tourism industries. Though not directly involved in aquaculture early on, she helped manage the books when they were starting out in Port Lincoln. Read the full story in our spring issue!

Dairy industry leader Fleurieu Milk Company (FMC) began in 2006 as a bold move by three farming families in Myponga, South Australia to take control of their future. Frustrated by falling milk prices, the Clarkes, Hutchinsons and Royans decided to bottle and sell their own milk – prioritising quality, animal welfare and local production.
From a small facility and a handful of staff, the fledgling company grew steadily with local baristas loving it for the best milk froth available and families loving the homegrown taste. The ever-evolving business quickly added to its excellent offerings, starting with flavoured milk. (We here at FLM have long been fans of their exceptional iced coffee.) Over the years, they’ve also added pouring cream, yoghurt and – most recently – sour cream, all without compromising their roots in transparency and community. ‘Everything you can see in this house has been repurposed,’ announces Mark Longhurst – better known as Longy – with a grin that spreads from his eyes down to his paint-splattered, steel-capped sneakers. ‘It’s been a labour of love.’
Beside him, his wife Margot smiles. They stand together on the threshold of their recently completed home in Chiton. Sunlight spills across the honeyed timber walls. As they step back to welcome me into this timber sanctuary, I catch a view all the way out to the trees beyond. The air is thick with the scent of aged timber and the quiet warmth of sunlight.
A builder and timber craftsman by trade, Longy has spent decades collecting, shaping and reimagining wood. Now, with this one-of-a-kind home, he and Margot have created something deeply personal: a hand-built celebration of sustainable living, creative design and the soulful integrity of reclaimed materials. But as the algal bloom continues to impact SA seafood consumption, the business has been forced to lay off staff, including family.
