So pumped for a little writers’ room next week for Written in Bone! Nearly a year since the first one!

It came together super last minute, but I love getting the chance to bounce ideas around with peers in the industry, always such good energy. This idea has been years in the making, and it finally feels like we’re pushing it forward. Really hoping we come out with something I can take to MIPCOM in October! Eek! No Pressure!

In the last month alone I’ve seen three different projects filmed here in Central Australia, or shared online after the fact, some in really sensitive places. And I can guarantee that no permission was sought for any of them.

Just because it’s Crown Land, or ‘out of town’, or even private property, doesn’t mean you don’t need a permit.

And permits are easy and affordable to get
• Crown Land – no fee ($0)
• Town Council – minimal fee ($109)
• Private land – usually free or low cost, especially for short films
• NT Parks – minimal fee (starts at $55)
• Traditional Owners/Custodians – minimal fee, and can often be free depending on the project

And just because it’s “only a documentary,” or a short film, or an advert, doesn’t make it exempt, all productions require the correct approvals.

Everywhere in Central Australia requires a filming permit AND a heritage agreement with the relevant Traditional Owners. That applies to everyone, local or not.

Places like The Gap are particularly significant. One area there is not to be filmed at all, and yet people film there without any consideration for the TOs or their wishes.

This isn’t about gatekeeping creativity. It’s about respecting Country and the people who hold knowledge and custodianship of it.

If you’re filming in Central Australia, do the right thing
✔️ Ask permission
✔️ Seek permits
✔️ Talk to the relevant TOs or land councils
✔️ Don’t assume it’s fine just because no one’s watching

There are clear processes to help with this, and people who are happy to guide you if you’re not sure where to start

Let’s keep making great work, but let’s make it right

Another awesome production with a truly fantastic team — feeling grateful, proud, and a little bit exhausted. Love this work and the people I get to do it with. 💛
