According to Foodbank's 2025 Hunger Report, 20 per cent of Australian households experienced "severe food insecurity", defined as skipping meals or whole days of eating, in the year up to July 2025 — a 1 per cent increase on the previous year.

But in one grassroots group is stepping in to help, not as a charity, but as a mutual aid effort quietly cooking from their home kitchens accross Darwin and Palmerston.

It's a team effort ensuring year-round relief for people experiencing hardship, led by a Palmerston woman praised by fellow volunteers for an uwaivering commitment to serve her community.

It's that time of year again, when dozens of dedicated decorators across Darwin deck out their homes in wonderful displays of Christmas lights 🎄🎁

And this year they proved that not even a cyclone was going to stop them from putting on a show.

Some things just don't go to plan 😅

It's not easy remembering your lines, or having to deliver them in public while people beep their horn at you. But somehow our journos make it look easy.

Here are some of the outtakes of them trying to get it right 🎬

The Northern Territory is a very transient place.

Many Territorians were born in a different state or country, found their way up here while on an adventure, or chasing work, and decided to stay.

So when Territorians stay in the NT for Christmas, many of them are spending it away from their families.

Who will you be spending your Christmas with this year, and what is the Christmas day plan?

🎄Friends?
🎄The family you have created for yourself in the NT?
🎄Relatives?
🎄Total strangers through an "orphan Christmas" event?
🎄By yourself?

Former president of the NT Cattlemen's Association, David Connolly, has been appointed as the next Administrator of the Northern Territory.

NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said Mr Connolly brought with him almost four decades of industry leadership, deep regional knowledge, and a strong commitment to building the Territory’s economy.

“He is a true cattleman, a sharp mind, and a respected leader whose life’s work has been shaped by the land and the people who depend on it,” Mrs Finocchiaro said.

“He has stood with Territorians through good seasons and bad. He knows the challenges, he knows the opportunities, and he understands better than most the economic engines that drive the Northern Territory."

ABC Rural spoke to Mr Connolly about the appointment and how he's feeling about the next three years.

VALE Geoffrey Shaw OAM 1945-2025

Tangentyere Council Aboriginal Corporation have issued a statement advising of the passing of a former Tangentyere President, Geoffrey Shaw OAM.

The statement said Mr Shaw was a proud Kaytete /Arrernte man and was a "respected leader whose work shaped the future of Alice Springs, Central Australia and the Northern Territory."

"He was one of the founders, general managers and presidents of Tangentyere Council, working for many years to formalise leases and establish proper housing on what were then fringe camps on the outskirts of Alice Springs."

"Mr Shaw was also instrumental in the formation of Central Australian Aboriginal Congress, the legal service that today is NAAJA, he was twice the deputy chair of the Central Land Council and was the first ATSIC Commissioner for Central Australia."

"He continued to work and was vocal in his support of measures to improve the lives of Town Campers and Aboriginal people until his health recently restricted his activities."

Funeral and memorial details will be announced at a later date.

The $50 million food subsidy scheme, which rolled out on July 1, subsidises more than 30 essential items in remote communities.

Independent Food Distributors Australia's Richard Forbes says the scheme undermines competition in the remote food supply chain.

A wholesaler hopes a review of a controversial outback food subsidy scheme will be independent and transparent.

A high-profile former Alice Springs school principal has been handed an 18-month suspended sentence for the aggravated assault of four Indigenous students.

Gavin Morris was found guilty in October on four counts of aggravated assault against students in 2023 and 2024, while he was the principal of Yipirinya School, an independent school for Indigenous children.

During sentencing on Thursday, Judge Anthony Hopkins said Morris's disadvantaged childhood and exposure to violence meant his impulse control was limited and he did not bear the same moral responsibility as those with privileged upbringings.
