AUDITIONS ARE NOW OPEN for the Armidale Radio Theatre Society's production of R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots)! 🤖
This is going to be a production unlike any that we have staged before, blending music, soundscape and the performances of both on-campus and online voice actors to produce a fascinating melodrama that explores what it means to be human, the value of human pursuits, and the pitfalls of artificial intelligence.
R.U.R is a science-fiction play written in 1920 by Czech playwright Karel Capek. It is considered to be the play that introduced the word 'robot' to the English language and to science-fiction as a whole. This fascinating melodrama has been translated into over 30 languages. The play is set in a fictional factory which mass-produces artificial people called "robots" to serve humans, but their exploitation leads the robots to revolt and wipe out humanity. In the aftermath, two robots begin to show emotions, hinting at a new beginning for life on Earth.
Auditions close at 11:59pm on August 31st, and are open to all members of the UNE community - first priority will be given to current students. All levels of acting and radio experience are welcome 🎭📻
The show will be broadcast live on TuneFM, on October 31st, with a listening party on the Digital HQ and on-campus - more information coming soon.
To audition, please record a brief (30 sec-2 min) dramatic reading of a story, play, poem or excerpt of your choosing. Please do not read from the play itself. Choose a story or reading that demonstrates your vocal ability in terms of expression, emotion and tone. Microphone and recording quality will not impact your ability to be cast.
