I’m very late to post this (life got in the way) but it was a career highlight to work on the doco on our very own Barry Humphries which aired in the UK on Christmas Day. It was also a thrill to receive a producer credit - couldn’t wait to tell Mum and Dad.

[season 4, episode 4: Dr Ginni Mansberg, Sydney, Australia]

There was a time soon after having my first daughter, in the depths of sleep deprivation and baby brain, and I was staying at my brother and sister-in-law’s house, and I really needed a cup of tea. So, I somehow put their electric kettle on a gas top stove … and lit it… almost setting their kitchen on fire. (Sorry Tomo and Anj.) I also recall not being able to recall simple words - like looking at a toaster and thinking, “Yeah…what is that called?” and constantly trying to pay for groceries with a Medicare card.

Right. So, how do we know the difference between cognitive decline and old age… or just a lack of sleep? And what are the simple steps we can take NOW to save our precious brain.

Well, Dr Ginni Mansberg is a GP, well-known TV host - you’ve probably seen her on Channel 7's Sunrise and The Morning Show, and a best-selling author. And her new book is called Save Your Brain.

Ginni interviewed 22 brain experts around the world to find easy-to-implement strategies to keep our brain functioning at its best. Her book looks at the fact that almost half of all cases of cognitive decline could have been prevented or delayed and that dementia is the leading cause of death in women. Plus, the role anxiety, depression, peri and menopause play.

In true style, her advice is upbeat, practical and fun. From sleep, to burnout, and the importance of connection and working, Ginni gives us a smorgasbord - an all-you-can-eat buffet - of ways to help save our brain.

[season 4, episode 3 - Alex Bunton. Canberra, Australia + Helen McCabe. Sydney, Australia]

Gaslighting, love bombing, surveillance, financial and coercive control - these are just some of the most common forms of non-physical abuse against women.

And former professional Australian basketballer Alex Bunton knows all about it. Alex met her perpetrator at the height of her career having just won a World Cup silver medal with the Opals - but also at a time she was most vulnerable. She’d had 11 knee surgeries and knew she’d soon have to retire.

She explains how her perpetrator cut her off from loved ones, made her think she was crazy, and drained her bank account on her birthday, while she was pregnant. … a period of deep shame and isolation followed.

Alex, alongside seven other victim-survivors, has joined with Future Women to be part of season 2 of the award-winning podcast series, There’s No Place Like Home, to share their experiences and to raise the question: would you notice the red flags of an abusive relationship? That nagging feeling that something is not quite right.

In today’s chat with Alex and Future Women’s Founder and Managing Director, (and all round media queen), Helen McCabe, we discuss how to spot the red flags; the steps to take to transition towards safety; and also how to help loved ones in need - without them feeling shame or judgment.

And a reminder for anyone who needs assistance - you can call the national counselling service 1800 RESPECT.

~AND WE’RE ROLLING~
[season 4, episode 2 - Elise Loehnen. Los Angeles, USA]
Elise Loehnen is a writer, editor and podcast host.
She’s also the author of the newly released and instant New York Times bestseller On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good.

Previously, Elise was the chief content officer of goop, where she co-hosted The goop Podcast and she also co-hosted The goop Lab on Netflix.

Elise talks me through the pivotal moment at the end of 2019, feeling inadequate and exhausted, and contending with consuming anxiety and panic. She realised the way she was living her life simply could not be sustained.

Elise came to recognise that, like so many of us, she was using work - and a ramped up level of busyness - as a tool to numb and to keep her fears at bay.

Through the process of writing this book, and ultimately changing her life, Elise learnt the value of sitting in the discomfort, re-connecting to our inner knowing, prioritising rest,
and interrupting our social conditioning…

She shares her simple steps to get really clear on our basic needs, wants, and who it is that we want to be, as a person.
