Q: Hi Wendy
How long have you been grooming and how and where did you start?

A: My introduction to dog grooming happened 41 years ago at the age of 15 when I completed 2 weeks work experience during yr 9 at High school. Initially I wanted to do work experience at Taronga Zoo in Sydney but the cost of travelling from Doonside to Mosman was not possible due to being a child from a big family with only one working parent.
Growing up I was always desperate to have a pet dog and Dog Grooming was always my second choice so my high school careers adviser called some local dog groomers and Lea Stone said she would be happy for me to attend her salon for the two weeks which was then located in Parramatta under a Veterinary Surgery.
Fast forward 6 years and I’m now married with a toddler in tow and one day I attended an all breeds dog show and by chance I met up again with Lea Stone who asked me what I was doing for work and offered me a part time job at her salon now located at Rooty hill. Well I was there the very next day now aged 22years.

Q When was your 1st dog grooming Competition?

A:The first grooming competition for me was in 2002, it was a Petex PIAA competition held at Rosehill racecourse.

Q How did you feel leading up to your first grooming competition?

My first competition had me a total
nervous wreck, quietly
confident in my abilities but so naive to the whole event.

Q: What was the competition atmosphere like?

A: I personally didn’t find my first competition to be a pleasant experience, I arrived on the day with my shaggy Irish Terrier with more than 6 months of coat, my battered up grooming table and a few tools. I was in a little bit embarrassed when I saw the nice table covers for the finished grooms and the nice grooming shirts worn by the other competitors.

Q: What impact did the judges’ critiques have on you?

A: The judges were very encouraging and awarded me Runner up
best in Show due to the amount of effort and my finished groom.

Q: What did you enjoy most about the experience?

A: On the day I was overwhelmed and filled with self pride even though it would be 8 years before I would enter another competition.

Q: How has competing changed your perspective or confidence? Has competing helped you to improve your skills in other ways?

A: I believe dog grooming competitions have come along way since my first experience especially regard to the comradely between competitors and the improvement in skill levels.
I believed in self challenge and made a point of competing with big coats for maximum results in before and after comparisons.

Q: What keeps you coming back to competitions?

A: My last competition was Groomania 2024 as part of Groomteam Australia. I cannot say if I will continue to compete.

Q What are some of your placements and achievements in Grooming comps you are proud of?

A: My second ever Grooming Competition in 2010 when I landed a spot on Groomteam who travelled to Belgium in 2011. Our team didn’t place that year at the worlds but I personally won the Masters Scissored All other breeds class with Kerry Blue Terrier.
My proudest personal achievements in Competitions would be winning 7 Best in show awards with 6 different breeds from Handstripped, All breeds Scissored and Poodle Class.
And lastly and a truely memorable moment was my involvement with Groomteam Australia in 2024 competing once again in Belgium and achieving 5 place in the World competition.

Q, What opportunities have come about from competing?

A: I have had some wonderful opportunities to travel and meet fellow groomers. Competition grooming has opened the door to the grooming world I didn’t really know existed outside my pet salon.

Q: What advice would you give to someone nervous about competing for the first time?

A: I would tell them to trust their skills and always look for improvement in their profile and finish.
Don’t ever think we have nothing more to learn, regardless of experience we can always improve.

Thank you so much for your time Wendy June Wouters

This week we interviewed
Jane Bourke
Grooming Competitor and member of Groomteam Australia “ The Quokka’s”

Name. Jane Bourke
Business name
The Naked Hound Grooming Salon

Q: hi Jane how long have you been grooming and when was your 1st grooming Competition?

I have been grooming for 18 years.
My first grooming comp was Brisbane Royal in 2012

Q How did you feel leading up to your first grooming competition?
I was nervous and didn't really know what to expect. I felt very under prepared and not good enough.

Q: What was the competition atmosphere like?
The atmosphere was really nice. Everyone was very friendly and helpful.

Q: What impact did the judges’ critiques have on you?
Invaluable, I was like a sponge taking it all in. And started to practice my technique all the time. I found my salon grooms started to benefit from my competition experience

Q: What did you enjoy most about the experience?
I loved the challenge, and to better myself with every groom. You always seem to be your own harshest critique. The connection I had with other groomers. Being from the country there was never a network to fall back on to. But with the friendships I have made it is so delightful to catch up withem every time I go to a comp.

Q: How has competing changed your perspective or confidence? Has competing helped you to improve your skills and in other ways?
Perspective and confidence definitely have come forward in leaps and bounds since competing. Knowing you understand a breed trim or freestyle haircut is so good, this helps in preparation and dog selection and time management for each groom.

Q: What keeps you coming back to competitions?
Addiction, hahahaha 😁
I'm a perfectionist and love making sure my dogs are in top condition health and coat wise. I love to grow the long coats on my American Cocker Spaniels and see the final result after a comp. It takes months of prep not just the week before to have a great comp dog in good hair

Q What are some of your placements and achievements in Grooming comps you are proud of?
I have been blessed with a great comp career. I have won multiple BIS and RUBIS, NSW state groomer. International and national online competitions with BIS and RUBIS for these events. The pinnacle of my grooming career would be the world Team Grooming Championships in Waregem, Belgium 2024 where the Australian groom team were place 5th out of 23 countries. I cannot begin to express how proud I am of our teams achievement. The experience was amazing

Q. What opportunities have come about from competing
Travel, sponsorship, friendships.
Travelling nationally and internationally with grooming has been a huge eye opener. It is amazing how your career can take you all over the place. Judging and instructing have been a tremendous experience and would like to further my career in those areas.

Q What is next for you?
I am not quite sure; I would like to branch out to more judging and teaching. Travelling overseas to compete is definitely on my list. Plus, possibly a bit of a shift to dog conformation shows

Q: What advice would you give to someone nervous about competing for the first time?
First time groomers, choose your dogs wisely. Maybe offer customers free weekly maintenance baths for the use of their dog. This will enable you to grow the length coat you need. The competition day prep is so important. Take your time, don't rush this, complete a nice straight show dry. This will be half of your effort towards a lovely result. It's just hair and it grows back so don't stress you are going to "wreck it". Just be prepared ☺️ it does get easier the more comps you attend xo
