What started as a way to reconnect with family recipes during lockdown has grown into a thriving community of more than 35,000 people.

Founded by Michelle Colangelo, Nonna’s Cucina Family is more than a cooking group. It’s a place where memories, traditions and family stories are shared through food. From treasured recipes passed down through generations to community lunches, gala events and fundraising initiatives, the group celebrates the enduring role of the nonna’s table in bringing people together.

As younger generations increasingly reconnect with their cultural roots, Nonna’s Cucina Family has become a living archive of migrant heritage, proving that food is about so much more than what’s on the plate. It’s about identity, belonging and the connections that unite us across generations.

From hiding eggplant sandwiches at school to building a national food brand with his son, Joe Di Cintio’s journey is a story of family, heritage, and passion. Inspired by the flavours of his Sicilian upbringing, Joe spent more than 40 years in hospitality before launching Chef Joey D with his son Max during the pandemic. What began as a homemade chilli oil quickly grew into a thriving business stocked in more than 150 stores and expanding internationally. At its heart, the brand is about more than food—it’s about family, tradition, and carrying a legacy into the next generation.

What began as a grassroots dance night in Melbourne has grown into a 15-night cultural journey across Italy — bringing together music, food, travel and community.

“Elvira’s Italian Dance Night Does Italy” will take participants through iconic regions including Toscana, Campania, Puglia and Calabria, with hands-on experiences ranging from bread-making and wine tastings to live music, workshops and sing-alongs.

More than a tour, the experience is about connection, memory and celebrating Italian heritage through the universal languages of music and food. Designed especially for older Italian-Australians, the journey recreates the warmth and inclusivity of the beloved Melbourne dance nights — this time across the piazze, kitchens and coastlines of Italy.

✨ A beautiful new exhibition celebrating memory, migration and Italian identity is coming to Melbourne.

COASIT Melbourne presents Recurring Echoes, a major exhibition by acclaimed Italian-Australian artist Liliana Di Lizio Barbieri, celebrating 25 years of artistic practice. 🇮🇹🇦🇺

Through painting, photography, installation and sculptural works, the exhibition explores how cultural memory lives through everyday rituals, objects and family traditions. Particularly fascinating is the dialogue between Italian heritage and contemporary identity — including references that connect the work to classical Italian art, such as Mantegna. 🎨

Italian culture continues to shape Australia’s design, architecture and arts scene — not as a static relic of migration, but as a living, evolving exchange. From iconic Italian furniture in Melbourne homes and cafés to Mediterranean-inspired suburban architecture and the enduring popularity of the St. Ali Italian Film Festival, Italian influence has been continually reinterpreted through Australian life. Rather than losing authenticity, these cultural traditions gain new meaning through adaptation, everyday use and shared experience — showing that heritage survives through evolution, not preservation alone.
