Women Lead the Fitness Floor – So Why Aren’t More Leading the Industry?
Walk into almost any gym in Australia and you’ll see it:
🧘🏾‍♀️Women teaching the classes.
👩🏻‍🏫Women driving member engagement.
☎️Women are running the day-to-day operations of business and home.
🍿But when you look up the food chain?
💨The leadership picture changes — fast.
👉🏼Here’s the reality:
Twenty-five per cent of board chairs in Australian sports bodies are women.
How many women sit on fitness, leisure, supplier or private sector boards?
Only 35% of private sector organisations have gender-balanced leadership.
Globally, women hold only 36% of leadership roles in the fitness industry, compared to 47% held by men.
This is not just a diversity problem.
It’s a business problem. It's our problem. We work in an industry that inspires and creates opportunities for people to achieve better health. Let's inspire and create opportunities for our women.
Too many women are being stereotyped into soft roles.
Women are being appointed to tick the boxes.
When leadership teams lack diversity, they miss:
✅ Fresh ideas ✅ Better decision-making
✅ Stronger member retention and acquisition
✅ Challenging Opinions for betterment ✅ Experience
Women already lead on the floor; they invest more in their education.
The majority of your members are women. Your marketing is predominantly targeted at women, so why not open the door of opinion and power to them?
It’s time they led; it's time they had a bigger voice; it's time those at the top of the food chain stopped and listened.

We must open the door and let women in.

Gym Owner and Operators hat on:-

Monday, I spent the day in Canberra at the AUSactive Leadership Forum. From CEOs to suppliers, speakers, educators, and fitness business owners, we were there, and we were there to learn, listen, and advocate for better health for our nation. I'm not going to bang on about it all, I'll let the AA team do that, they deserve it, they did an incredible job putting it all together - getting a room full of MPs and Drs together at the same time for the betterment of our industry and the health of the nation—extra special congratulations to Mariana Ivantsoff. If you weren't in the room yesterday, you should have been. If you're not a member of AUSactive because you feel you don't get value, I suggest you speak to those who were there.
Value is not all about discounts off 'things'. Value is not about recognition on a global scale of who you are and what you have achieved; if you want that, then hire a social media manager. Here's what my thoughts are on value when I pay a membership or fee. Yes, I am a paying member of AUSactive, as I operate and own a gym. It's about going into bat for my brand at a level that I as an operator cannot achieve, it's about doing the long-term hard yards so my business prospers, it's about someone else being my voice when a crisis occurs, it's about another person fighting for my rights as a business. When I pay a membership fee, I want someone to do it for me; my voice alone is not enough. If the fight AA put up for the industry during CV19 wasn't enough, then yesterday was. You see, when we fight for a level playing field so our industry truly gets what it deserves, everyone wins, even those who do nothing to advocate; they still benefit. AUSactive, through its collective action and advocacy, ensures that even those who do nothing still benefit. So, let me ask you: where do your values and integrity stand? Mine sits with those who put up a good fight for all. Mine sits with those who have spent the last two years hammering out a fairer membership system; my team will benefit from this. Mine sits with those who fight for my business and the overall betterment of my industry; it's the foundation that keeps our doors open, it keeps our members moving, and the generations to come. Today's fight is tomorrow's future.
Where does your value sit?

Thanking the sponsors pictured below for their participation, events cannot run without them.

AUSactive - A New Membership Model for a New Era.

Elevating Professionals, Empowering Businesses, Supporting You.

AUSactive has launched a significant reform of its professional membership system, a move designed to modernise, simplify, and better reflect the diverse, multidisciplinary nature of Australia's exercise and active health industry.

At the core of the changes is a new two-tiered structure:

* Accredited Exercise Professional, for those committed to continuous development (20 CPD points over 2 years), with enhanced benefits and recognition.
* Registered Professional, for qualified, insured professionals with current First Aid and CPR, but no (CPD formally CEC) requirement. Ideal for casual or returning practitioners.

For more information about the changes, head over to the AUSactive website:

I'm reading a lot about gym operators needing to have some type of recovery options in their gyms. From Sauna and heat therapy to cold therapy, contrast baths, compression technology, massage tools, percussion therapy, and more, there is a wide range of options to choose from. We then see resources around sleep optimisation, nutrition, hydration, meditation, mobility and flexibility sessions. And yes, many gyms are incorporating recovery zones where once there were cycle or functional training areas.
As an industry, we're still selling gym memberships and then upselling the above. Yet we all know we still have high mental health problems globally.

Can we move away from selling easy gym memberships to the converted and start promoting mental health programs that include and endorse physical activity along with the recovery options? Could a mental health membership be an option on the menu when new consumers walk through the door? Imagine having a program written up with a focus on mental wellbeing.

Achieving the look good will come when they feel good.

Stats.
🇦🇺 Mental Health in Australia: The Latest Snapshot
Did you know nearly 1 in 2 Australians will experience a mental health disorder in their lifetime? According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics:
🔹 42.9% of Australians aged 16–85 have experienced a mental disorder at some point.
🔹 21.5% experience a mental disorder each year.
🔹 The most common are anxiety disorders (17.2%), mood disorders (7.5%), and substance use disorders (3.3%).
Here's how it breaks down:
✅ Young people (16–24): Highest rates, with 38.8% reporting a mental disorder in the past year.
✅ 25–34 age group: Around 25% reported a mental disorder in the past year.
✅ 55+: Around 15% experience depression or anxiety.
✅ Women aged 20–29 are twice as likely as men to report mental health issues (16% vs 8%).
✅ LGB+ Australians: Up to 74.5% have experienced a mental disorder in their lifetime, much higher than heterosexual Australians (41.7%).
✅ Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people: Around 24% report mental health challenges, with anxiety being the most common.
One concerning trend: psychological distress among 15–24-year-olds is rising sharply, with 42.3% reporting high levels of distress.

Mental health doesn't discriminate; it affects every human being.

How is your fitness business leading the war against mental health in your community?
