PRESS RELEASE: August 28, 2025.
Million Moves Declares War on Inactivity in $15B Health Emergency.
Australia is facing a $15 billion inactivity health crisis – and data shows the solution isn’t medicine, it’s movement.
Million Moves is a free, fun, three-week inclusive program designed for people of all ages and abilities to move more and build healthy habits that last.
Registrations are open and it’s free to sign up and pledge 75 daily ‘moves’ for 21 days from 1-21 September – representing the 75%+ physically inactive Australians, costing the economy $15B annually – and the three weeks it takes to form a healthy habit.
Murdoch University will release new research post-event to measure behaviour change, and participants access a $125k prize pool, including free access to hundreds of gyms, health and fitness facilities and workout apps.
Million Moves aims to reverse the City of Ballarat data showing
39.1% have long-term health conditions, higher than the Regional Victorian average.
62% of adult males and nearly 43% of females are overweight or obese.
2 in 5 have one or more long-term health conditions, 1 in 5 live with disability, including around 7,000 with severe/profound disability, 78% physical & 22% mental/behavioural.
36% have been diagnosed with anxiety or depression, compared to 27% in Victoria.
41% of females have been diagnosed with anxiety or depression in their lifetime, and 19% reported a high degree of psychological distress.
31% of males have been diagnosed with anxiety or depression at some point, with 17% reporting a high or very high degree of psychological distress.
Nationally, over 75% of Australians are inactive, fuelling 20% of preventable chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, heart and kidney disease and several cancers – all major contributors to premature death and disability.
AUSactive CEO Barrie Elvish says the challenge is about breaking down barriers to movement, stating, “This isn’t about Lycra or six-packs – it’s about making activity simple and achievable.”
“If we can help people form healthy habits in just 21 days, the ripple effect for families, communities and the healthcare system will be enormous.”
This AUSactive initiative, supported by the Australian Government, managed by the Australian Sports Commission in Ballarat (Vic) and Wollongong (NSW) provides access to the $125k Prize Pool, including:
Free gym passes, classes and activations at hundreds of gyms, including SNAP Fitness, Anytime Fitness, Jetts, F45, Genesis Health And Fitness Ballarat 24/7 and Goodlife Health Clubs.
Free access to workout apps including The Body Coach (Joe Wicks, videos/socials), Sweat Zumba Fitness app, 3D Measure Me, and Les Mills.
2 x $30k new gym equipment for schools registering a team of 10 or more (or multiple teams like students vs staff) from Matrix Fitness and Revo Fitness, including a $4K InBody body scanner.
Expert tips from PTs, AUSactive health ambassadors and free resources including movement trackers and fitness guides for the gym, home and outdoors.
Coles vouchers and other discounts, including 15% off activewear from LSKD.

Data shows
3 in 4 Australians don’t meet minimum movement guidelines
61% of workers are experiencing burnout, compared to the global average of 48%.
Up to 38% of disease could be prevented by reducing risk factors like being overweight.
Every $1 invested in preventive health saves approximately $14.30 in healthcare and other costs.
Just 15 minutes of daily movement can boost mental health by 22.5%.
Exercise is 1.5 x more effective than counselling or medication for depression.
The World Health Organization (WHO) Organization (WHO) recommends 2.5-5 hours of moderately intense physical activity per week, or 1.25-2.5 hours of vigorous exercise – or a mix of both, including multiple sessions of muscle-strengthening activities.
