Time to Step Up: Tasmania and the NT Deserve More Wrestling

Let’s call it what it is — Tasmania and the Northern Territory are getting the short end of the stick when it comes to professional wrestling in Australia. And not just by a little. It’s not a gentle tap on the shoulder; it’s a full-blown bodyslam of neglect.

Thank You NSW Pro Wrestling Legend Salem

A mainstay of IWA and UWA in Sydney throughout the 2000s, Salem was a powerful big man, who captured the IWA Trans Tasman and UWA Ultimate championships during this time as a singles competitor and crossed paths with the likes of Tyson Gibbs, Rob Matrix, Phil Picasso along the way. His time as a tag team with Devlin De Skyes is remembered particularly fondly by his fans. As recently as 2020 and in what was his final wrestling match, Salem captured the AWE championship from then champion Psyckotic, before unfortunately vacating the title and retiring from Professional Wrestling for personal reasons in 2021.

Psykotic, remembered him as “a great leader and veteran in that ring”, whilst Phil Picasso recalled they “travelled all over NSW together”. The Giant Kyote, posted a beautiful tribute to Facebook to a fellow big man which encapsulated what many who knew him would feel – “This legend was truly one of a kind, Sandy Salem was without a doubt one of the best if not the best monster heels & at times face. He was always so kind to me and helped me with my movements & mannerisms whenever we saw each other down south”.

Angus McLoud, who shared the ring with Salem many times and fellow member of Clan McLoud wrote, “We started our wrestling journey together, I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to have a kindred spirt with me from the start. My tag team partner, my mate in metal, I gonna miss you big guy”.

Our 8th Camp is almost done and I will never take these opportunities for granted.

We have the best Pro Wrestling scene in the world and it can be attributed to both an elite standard of coaching across the country and a growing number of dedicated students who are not above making regular investments in bettering themselves.

Today we remember Salem, 2 years on from his passing.
Take a look back at our feature on Salem written by his former tag team partner Devlin DeSkyes.

"Salem was a great bloke, but those of you who only knew his in-ring work might struggle to believe me. He cut an imposing figure at a legit 6’5, long black hair with a genuine mean streak, he had an incredible presence. A presence that I’m not sure even he was fully aware of. A true heel, a proper villain and one of the last of those 80’s influenced workers that saw the value in keeping kayfabe alive, even in the modern over exposed era".

Slam Joins In On NRL Game-Day Entertainment

Sydney’s Pro Wrestling Australia and Queensland’s Impact Pro Wrestling both participated in NRL pre-game entertainment earlier this year with partnerships with the West Tigers and Gold Coast Titans. With Slam being the latest the promotion to join in on the trend could this kick-start a new avenue for Aussie federations to showcase their brand of professional wrestling to a wider audience. With the Canberra Raiders currently leading the National Rugby League competition along with a potential 25,000 capacity at GIO stadium on August 30, are Slam’s massive crowds set to get even bigger at the back end of 2025? Further solidifying Slam Pro Wrestling League as Australia’s biggest promotion?

Linking up with the Canberra Raiders and The Terry Campese Foundation Slam Pro Wrestling League...

Hayter Claims Grand Title – RCW 300 Recap

“RCW 300 has been and gone, and what an event it was! This truly is the greatest sport in the world. I consider myself incredibly lucky to be a part of Riot City Wrestling—a club with such a rich history, a great culture, great fans, and an amazing talent pool. Being forced to keep up with these young guys is both a blessing and a curse. The future of Riot City looks great. Thanks to everyone who messaged through well wishes or came out for the night. Can’t wait to see who’s around for 400!” - Matt Basso (RCW promoter)

For two decades, Riot City Wrestling has been a key part of South Australia’s wrestling scene. On 11 July at Big Shed Brewing, RCW marked a major milestone with its 300th event. Featuring championship matches, long-running rivalries, and a strong sold out attendance, the night showed why RCW conti...
