The home studio of ceramic artist Amanda Langley .langley.artworks 🎨

I recently had the pleasure of capturing Amanda's creative space, finished pieces, parts of her process and portraits she could use on social media, for press opportunities, and for exhibition and market applications.

Amanda said this was a big step for her, but saw the opportunity to step in front of my camera as a way to ‘finally’ invest in her practice, with the goal to further develop her ceramic work in the year ahead — and I couldn’t have been more inspired when I heard this! 👏

Working with porcelain clay and lots of different powdered stains, Amanda’s vibrant hand-built pieces reflect her love of stained glass, colour, pattern and texture, and I loved getting to witness her in action amongst a setting that is filled with inspiration and objects from fellow artists she admires.

Something that comes up all the time when people inquire about a shoot with me:

💬 “My studio isn’t much, I’m not sure if it will work.”
💬 “It’s tiny and really messy in here.”
💬 “Maybe we should hire a different space”

And to that, I say: No way 😉

Your studio—whether it’s a shared space, a spare room, a garage, or a tiny corner of your home—is where the magic happens. It’s where your hands are deep in clay, paint, paper, textile and the like; where your ideas take shape; where your work truly *lives*. That’s what makes it worth capturing.

A ‘perfect’ studio isn’t what makes a good photo.

It’s the light, the details, the tools, the textures, the way your hands move, the quiet moments between the making. And that exists in any space.

So if your studio isn’t spotless, styled, or spacious, don’t let that hold you back. There are so many stories waiting to be told—and I’m here to help you see it.

Here’s what nobody tells you about opening an online print shop: If you don’t make time for marketing, you don’t get many orders 😆🙈 Guilty.

I have a stack of beautiful fine art photographic prints looking for new homes, so I’m bringing them to the Imperfectly Perfect Market at Marrickville Library Pavilion next weekend!

The beautiful ceramic studio of Sydney-based artist , which was a joy to capture during one of her student workshops late last year.

Araceli’s hand-painted porcelain plate designs are inspired by Australia’s rich biodiversity, featuring the wonder, curiosity and COLOUR of oceanic creatures 🦞 and this group were walked through techniques to paint an Australian Tropical Rock Lobster while they learnt more about its habitat and incredible characteristics from a visiting marine ecologist 😎

As the climate changes and natural habitats are threatened, Araceli hopes her work as an artist elicits wonder and joy so we may be more inclined to value and preserve what we have 💚🌏

Ceramicist Nevena Zakhariev of Pinched by Nevena invited me and my camera to her Blue Mountains based studio, nestled amongst the beautiful bush on Gundungurra Land.

We spent three hours together creating content that captures all the parts of her ceramics practice including wheel-throwing, hand-building, hand-carving, unloading the kiln, as well as a range of her latest pieces — and believe me when I say it was difficult to choose just 10 shots for this carousel, I have so many faves! 🙊

I don’t think I will ever tire of getting to visit studios like this to photograph the creative process 🙌

I’ve been slowly (very slowly) learning about different artificial lighting setups 💡 so I can expand what’s possible on a shoot and not always have to rely solely on natural light (though that will always be my fave 🌞)

When I say it’s a whole new world, I am often completely overwhelmed by it — but it is also so FUN, and some of my favourite shoots have happened since saying yes to more projects that I didn’t think were possible for me just a few years ago.

I made a start in investing in some of my own lighting gear last month, and though I still prefer to work in collaboration with those who have this skill (and extensive gear!) down-pat, it’s quite exhilarating to be venturing more into this new-to-me realm as a creative.

So here’s to always learning, experimenting and giving things a go! 😅

Creative spaces tell some of the most intriguing and joyful stories. Used paintbrushes here, notebooks splayed over there; maybe a few empty cups of tea (yep, I’m that person too ☕)

Creativity is messy, and I’m here for it!
