Caterpillar and Splitrec are proud to announce

Raindrop Shadows
Mareike Dobewall – Caterpillar 14. Release date 27/4/2025.

2024 Sydney: It rained a lot. In her studio at the New Art Residency at Newington College, Mareike Dobewall observed the rain slide down the windows, as she listened to the rain through the thin glass - outside on the streets and above her on the roof. She writes;

"When attempting to trace the raindrops on the windows through transparent paper, I noticed I was drawing lines and not, as one would expect, shapes of drops. Through the transparent paper, I could only see the reflections of the environment in the raindrops —as lines of light and shadows — and this is how the visual score for Raindrop Shadows came to be.
This album is the echo of that quiet dialogue between rain and glass, light and shadow.
Raindrop Shadows is written for five wind instruments."

The months that Mareike had been in Sydney, she was a regular contributor to the Splinter Orchestra, a large scale improvising group that meets weekly to play together. Mareike asked five wind players of the orchestra to perform her scores, Jim Denley – flutes, Uma Volkmer – trumpet, Laura Altman – clarinet, Ellen Kirkwood – voice and little instruments, Andrew Fedorovitch – alto sax. Mareike writes;

The process of finding the music was not translation, but transformation — letting the lines result in intimate, nearly tactile expression. A sonic surface with the touch of rain. The musicians breathe absence and presence. The music listens like weather.

Released today!

As Weather Volume 3: Budawang Mountains
Jim Denley and the eternally orchestrating sonoverse

Outside of halls, chambers, and studios, as-weather musicking unfolds with the Ravine that runs through the Monolith Valley, Budawangs Mountains, Yuin Nation. Musicking with gum-nut, voice, flute, other beings, energies, and place, perceptions and soundings entangle with diverse weathers.

Reviews for Volume 1 + 2:
“One must be open to noticing minutiae that, more than those of a musical statement, relate to priceless slivers of existence.”
Massimo Ricci writing in Touching Extremes

“…an amalgamation which is probably the closest a modern day listener can come to what could be described as a recreation of ‘early ancient music’ experienced by our ancestors thousands or more years ago. This is a time-dissolving trip.” BAZE. DJUNKIII writing in Nitestylez.Released

We are thrilled to announce the upcoming release of Jim Denley new album ‘As Weather Volume 3: Budawang Mountains’

Available for preorder on LP/ CD / DL today via the link, where the first single, ‘Diffraction Study #1’ can also be streamed.

This release marks the third and final volume of Jim Denley’s ‘Weather’ series, alongside In Weather (Splitrec 31), and With Weather (Splitrec 32). This project has emerged over the last four years of Jim's PhD research, centred around recording/‘musicking’ with Budawang Mountains (Yuin Country) and Sydney Harbour (Gadigal Country).

Since the late 1980s Jim Denley has been musicking with the Budawang Mountains, regularly hanging out there to play and record. This volume continues Jim’s enquiry into ways of musicking that are anti-anthropocentric and which seek to co-create in sonic reciprocity with primordial ecologies.

This is a deeply personal album and we are proud to start sharing the music. Thank you for listening, more music and info to come!
Also, it’s Bandcamp Friday!

Announcing the new digital release of ‘Burst’ by Bad PhotoGraphy, on our digital sublabel Caterpillar. We started caterpillar as a way to share the incredible individual and collaborative work of folks within, and closely affiliated with, Splinter Orchestra - a constantly evolving large(ish) scale improvisational, exploratory and experimental collective.

Bad PhotoGraphy, is a trio comprising Jim Denley, a Splinter member for over 20 years, with two of Splinter’s newest members, Uma Volkmer and Alex Tucker. With alto sax, trumpet, vocals and drums, this improvising trio embarks on a ride through new terrain, pushing each other to play at the edges of what they know, and exploring how they listen, relate and create in each others’ company.

‘Burst’ is an exciting ‘snapshot’ of this new collaboration, having just formed over the last 6 months, but done some serious playing, gigging, recording and listening together in that time.

The music is fresh, fiery, inquisitive and invigorating, and we invite you to check it out on Caterpillar bandcamp page https://caterpillarrec.bandcamp.com/album/burst

They are launching the album tomorrow, Thursday 22nd February at Johnston Street Jazz in Annandale, 7:30pm. https://www.facebook.com/events/1329541941080556

“Deep Listening Music in its purest form, featuring bird chatter and barking dogs as well as droning, oftentimes slightly off-kilter flute sequences, ominous low frequency rumbles of unclear origin, mechanical air flows and hypnotic, ever repeating fragments of melodies, static crackles and everlasting eternal calmness, rural water flows, colliding sticks, rocks and partially indecipherable voices deeply embedded in the mix - an amalgamation which is probably the closest a modern day listener can come to what could be described as a recreation of 'early ancient music' experienced by our ancestors thousands or more years ago. This is a time-dissolving trip.”
