This week marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of Juanita Nielsen, a young and wealthy socialite who was also a fearless independent journalist who stood against powerful developers trying to bulldoze heritage housing in King Cross in 1970’s. Despite decades of theories and witness statements, her body was never found and her case remains unsolved. Notorious crime boss Abe Saffron appeared to hint at property developer Frank Theeman, but he died in 1989. NSW has long had a shady history of cover-ups, police corruption and dodgy real estate dealings. Nielson may have assumed her social status would protect her, but nothing gets in the way of money and power in this city.
Urthboy's track ‘Hey Juanita’ pays tribute to her life and legacy. Taken from his captivating 5th record, ’The Past Beats Inside Me Like a Second Heartbeat’ (2016).
Urthboy reflects that "Juanita Nielsen's story is really interesting, and speaks to the hope that people in the wider community will fight for each other. It seemed like the real estate business in Sydney was like the wild west back in the 60s and 70s and they were just turfing out poor folks en masse and sending em wherever without any consideration for their lives and communities. Juanita stood out because she was young, beautiful and from a wealthy family, but she symbolised a bigger story of defiance and humanity that is worth holding onto."
