Wyndham WA

A visit to this area is highly recommended, a mix of amazing scenery and heritage locations.

We stayed at , which we absolutely loved - from the friendly staff to the amaaazing food to the wildlife. Marglu Billabong is nearby and the birdlife is fantastic.

It’s a great spot to base yourself for a few days, which is what we did. Here’s a selection of shots from our adventures in the area 🦥

1. Giant Croc in Wyndham village
2 & 3. Five Rivers lookout
4. Afghan cameleer cemetery
5. Old Telegraph station remains
6. Beautiful boabs at sunset
7. Boab Prison Tree, near Wyndham
8. & 9. Ancient rock paintings near Moochalabra Dam

This absolutely GIANT boab is at a rest stop along the Great Northern Highway between Fitzroy Crossing and Derby.

If you have you can search for Giant Boab Rest Area.

Do not miss the chance to see this magnificent ancient tree!

We can only guess at the age of this tree, but it must be 1000 years old or more (based on the age estimates of smaller trees)

📍Wolfe Creek Crater WA
Having never watched the movie, seeing this crater has been on my bucket list for a long time.

The road in was a mixed bag. Road works for 10kms meant that the road had been duplicated. That section was excellent, being well maintained for the trucks involved in the roadworks. After that there were big ruts, mini craters and lots of corrugations.

We pulled up at a rest stop not far from the entrance where we dropped our van, made the dog comfy and headed in. The crater area is a national park.

There are multiple gates to open and close, plenty of ruts and corrugated sections.

Once you get to the last gate a sneaky track to the left avoids all the worst sandy section, where getting bogged is very easy. Keep your eye out for it!

It was pretty warm and we didn’t have time to hike into the crater itself but the view from the edge was amazing. Totally worth the drive! 🦥

📍Quobba Lighthouse WA
We’ve seen a few lighthouses on our travels. This one is quite a way back from the shore, perched on a hill accessed via a gravel road. For the adventurous (um, crazy) people there is a four wheel drive track. On a clear day the view is fantastic.

📍Buddhas Camp, Hamersley Gorge WA
A great dog friendly free camp right near the entrance to Hamersley Gorge.

Plenty of space to spread out and we were lucky enough to snag a spot next to some shady trees for a few days.

The landscape here is awe inspiring, a backdrop of red cliffs on one side and low shrubby plains on the other. The small hill here has a couple of old chairs and a table making it a great spot to watch the sunset.

There are no facilities here so come self sufficient, take your rubbish with you.

People have camped on this hill, which is great BUT it was somebody who decided 💩 on the ground behind a rock and leaving it unburied is ok. It’s NOT OK. 🤢 ugh. Is it really that hard to be a decent human?

📍Quobba WA

This is surely one of Australia’s most recognised signs, though lots of people might not know where it is.

This part of the Gascoyne coastline in Western Australia is a hot spot for surfers and fishermen.

It might not seem likely, but there’s also a great snorkelling and swimming area along here too.

It’s a beautiful, rugged coastline and one of our favourites so far in WA.

Growing up along the Murray River far from oceans you don’t learn about things like “king” waves. So we did a bit of research and discovered king waves occur on average twice a day. Scientists cannot predict when they might happen and don’t know why. Research is relatively recent as the idea of king waves was thought to be implausible. In 1826 Jules Dumont d’Irville (a captain and scientist) was publicly ridiculed after reporting a 30ft wave in the Indian Ocean. Research didn’t start until the 1980’s.

Early morning hikes sometimes mean you can have a place all to yourself. For a little while, at least.

This is Kalamina Gorge in

A relatively easy walk down the steps to the bottom of the gorge takes you to a permanent pool, with its own waterfall and beautiful trees.

The full hike takes you right along the gorge past trees, shrubs and grasses that are home to a variety of birds , including the red winged fairy-wren. Tried hard but just could not get a pic of the male wren !

Being there early meant we had the pool at the end all to ourselves so we had stripped off for a swim. No need to walk back in wet gear 😉

Rich deposits of ore are found in this area, formed over 1 billion years ago! Mining companies love it as they simply crush up mountains and ship it directly overseas for processing.

Meanwhile, you can still see some super old rock formations by taking a walk in one of the many beautiful gorges in this park. On a good warm day you can also take a swim.
